Simultaneous measurement of antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus, human herpesvirus 6, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, and 14 enteroviruses in chronic fatigue syndrome: is there evidence of activation of a nonspecific polyclonal immune response?

As a test of the hypothesis that elevated titers of viral antibodies in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are due to a nonspecific polyclonal immune response, antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), and 14 enteroviruses in 20 patients with CFS and 20 age- and gender-matched controls were simultaneously measured. Similarly, titers of IgG to herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 were measured in 18 of these cases and in the respective controls. IgG to EBV viral capsid antigen (VCA) was present at titers > or = 1:320 in 55% of cases vs. 15% of controls (

Preliminary Evidence of the Association between Time on Buprenorphine and Cognitive Performance among Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder Maintained on Buprenorphine: A Pilot Study.

People on buprenorphine maintenance treatment (BMT) commonly present cognitive deficits that have been associated with illicit drug use and dropout from buprenorphine treatment. This study has compared cognitive responses to the Stroop Task and the Continuous Performance Task (CPT) among individuals on BMT, with recent drug use, and healthy controls and explored the associations between cognitive responses and drug use, craving, and buprenorphine use among participants on BMT. The participants were 16 individuals on BMT and 23 healthy controls. All participants completed a 60 min laboratory se

Expectation of reward differentially modulates executive inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Inhibitory control, a key modulatory component of cognition guiding strategy and behaviour, can be affected by diverse contingencies. We explore here the effect of expectation of reward over behavioural adjustment in a Stop Signal Task modulated by reward. We hypothesize that cognitive control is modulated by different expectation of the reward. METHODS: Participants were allocated to two groups differing in their degree of knowledge in what to expect from rewards. Expected Specific Reward participants (N = 21) were informed of the different monetary feedbacks they would receive a

Peripheral neuropathic changes in pachyonychia congenita.

We compared patterns of intraepidermal nerve fibers and mechanoreceptors from affected and unaffected plantar skin from patients with pachyonychia congenita (PC) and control subjects. Plantar biopsies from 10 genetically confirmed patients with PC (with a mutation in KRT6A) were performed at the ball of the foot (affected skin) and the arch (unaffected) and were compared to biopsies from corresponding locations in 10 control subjects. Tissue was processed to visualize intraepidermal nerve fibers (IENF) (PGP9.5), subsets of IENF (CGRP, substance P, tyrosine hydroxylase), myelinated nerve fiber

Helicobacter pylori infection delays the healing of acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer in Japanese monkeys.

To clarify the relationship between Helicobacter pylori and the healing of gastric ulcers, we investigated the healing of acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers in the antral mucosa of Japanese monkeys (n = 5) infected with H. pylori and in control monkeys without H. pylori infection (n = 6). Using H. pylori-infected Japanese monkeys as an experimental model, gastric ulcers were induced endoscopically with acetic acid. Healing of ulcers and factors that influenced healing were studied. Continuous colonization with H. pylori was confirmed in the infected group throughout the observation period; no

The influence of adrenal hormone status on neuroendocrine peptides in the rat anterior pituitary gland.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY), neurotensin (NT), substance P (SP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) are four structurally unrelated neuroendocrine peptides which affect anterior pituitary function. All four peptides appear to be locally synthesized in the anterior pituitary gland and have been shown to be regulated by thyroid and/or sex hormone status. We show here that NT, SP and VIP but not NPY are influenced by adrenal hormone status in the male rat pituitary gland. Adrenalectomy increased the content of VIP (35.4 +/- 4.0 (S.E.M.) vs control 11.9 +/- 1.1 pmol/g wet weight) but decreased that o

Effectiveness of multipronged intervention on knowledge and attitude regarding health risk behaviors and prevention among Indian adolescents: A cluster randomized controlled trial.

Adolescence is a critical window for the emergence of lifestyle-related health risk behaviours that contribute substantially to the global burden of disease. This study examined the effectiveness of a multipronged, school-based intervention in improving knowledge and attitudes regarding health risk behaviours among adolescents. A cluster-randomized design was used to recruit 338 first-year pre-university students (170 intervention; 168 control).Baseline data on sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge, and attitudes were collected using validated self-administered tools. The intervention co

Brain white matter microstructural integrity differences between pre-post buprenorphine-naloxone treated individuals with opioid use disorder: Evidence from a DTI study.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) has been linked to alterations in brain white matter microstructure, but evidence comparing pre-treatment and six-month buprenorphine-naloxone (BNX) treatment remains limited. This study examined changes in brain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics before and after six months of BNX treatment in individuals with OUD and assessed the influence of concurrent cannabis and tobacco use. This pre-post study included 25 individuals with OUD initiating BNX treatment and 25 healthy controls. All participants underwent 3-Tesla brain DTI scans at baseline and at six-month fol

In vitro and field efficacy of fungicides and postharvest 1-methylcyclopropene against dry lenticel rot (Ramularia mali).

Dry lenticel rot, caused by the ascomycete Ramularia mali, is an emerging postharvest threat to apple production in European alpine regions. Despite its increasing prevalence, established control strategies remain unavailable. This study evaluated the efficacy of 16 fungicides, including succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors (SDHIs; Group 7), demethylation inhibitors (DMIs; Group 3), quinone outside inhibitors (QoIs; Group 11), and multi-site inhibitors, alongside two plant fortifiers. Furthermore, the potential of the ripening inhibitor 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) was tested after harvest. In v

Anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning confirmed by vitamin K1 depletion in raptors from Patagonia.

The use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) raises a dilemma regarding the regulation of persistent bioaccumulative toxic substances (PBTs), given that these products have applications in high demand by society, such as the control of zoonotic pests, for which there are no clear alternatives. In this work, we describe for the first time SGAR contamination in birds of prey from Argentina and South America. We found concerning levels in the liver and prevalence of SGAR (brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, flocoumafen and difethialone) bioaccumulation (18.2%), particularly

Potential association between endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and gynecomastia: a systematic review based on partial experimental evidenceendocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Gynecomastia (GYN), the most prevalent benign breast condition in men, is primarily driven by an estrogen-androgen imbalance, which induces glandular proliferation and adipose hypertrophy. This imbalance leads to the proliferation of mammary gland tissue and hypertrophy of adipose tissue. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), as a class of exogenous substances widely distributed in the environment, can disrupt hormonal homeostasis by mimicking estrogen, antagonizing androgens, or interfering with hormone metabolism. Consequently, they represent a significant environmental risk factor for indu

Green Resins for All: Sustainable Preparation of PEGA Resin for Peptide and Protein Synthesis and Immobilization.

Polyethylene glycol-polyacrylamide (PEGA) resins, known for their superior performance in peptide assembly and for their properties in on-bead biochemical assays, are, despite their superior performance, currently not commercially available. This may be due to the reported polymerization medium, CCl4, being classified as a highly controlled substance. The present work describes the easy preparation of larger volumes of PEGA supports by either bulk inverse suspension polymerization or by size-controlled flow synthesis. The technology uses silicone oil as a suspension medium and the oil is readi

Antihypertensive Medication as a Risk Factor For Basal Cell Carcinoma: A Nationwide Registry-based Case-control Study.

Hydrochlorothiazide has been associated with increased cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma risk. Meanwhile, its association with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) risk is controversial. The association between commonly prescribed antihypertensive medications and BCC risk in the Swedish population was investigated. All cases with a histopathologically verified BCC in Sweden during 2007-2017 and 2 matched controls per case were included in this nationwide, registry-based, case-control study. Information on prescribed anti-hypertensive drugs, comorbidities, co-medications, and socioeconomic factors was re

Differential effects of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) on attentional guidance by working memory in males with substance use disorder according to memory modality.

Information stored in working memory can guide perception selection, and this process is modulated by cognitive control. Although previous studies have demonstrated that neurostimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) contributes to restore cognitive control among individuals with substance use disorder (SUD), there remains an open question about the potential stimulation effects on memory-driven attention. To address this issue, the present study adopted a combined working memory/attention paradigm while employing high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation

LncRNAs Involved in Antioxidant Response Regulation as Biomarkers of Gestational Diabetes: A Study on H19, MALAT1 and MEG3.

Recent findings highlighted the potential of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) as novel indicators of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), as they demonstrate altered expression in metabolic disorders, oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation (IFM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic potential and prognostic significance of the OS/IFM-related lncRNAs H19, MALAT1 and MEG3 in GDM and their correlations with redox status-related parameters. The relative quantification of selected lncRNAs from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of GDM patients and controls (n = 50 each) was pe

Sensitivity assessment of Biomphalaria glabrata (SAY, 1818) using reference substance sodium dodecyl sulfate for ecotoxicological analyzes.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is a surfactant used and recommended by regulatory agencies as a reference substance in ecotoxicological analyzes. In this work, acute toxicity assays were performed with adults and embryos of the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata, an endemic organism with environmental and public health importance, to evaluate the effects of the surfactant and establish a sensitivity control chart. The organisms were exposed to SDS for 24 h to a range of concentrations, as well as a control group. Six assays were performed to establish the control chart for adults (with a med
