Providing information on mental well-being during audiological consultations: exploring barriers and facilitators using the COM-B model.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the barriers and facilitators of hearing healthcare clinicians (HHC) providing information to audiology consumers on (i) the mental health impacts of hearing loss, and (ii) management options for improving mental well-being. DESIGN: A qualitative study using semi-structured individual and group interviews. Both the interview guide and the deductive process of data analysis were based on the COM-B model (Capabilities, Opportunities and Motivations required for Behaviour change). STUDY SAMPLE: Fifteen HHCs with between 2 and 25 years of clinical experience (mean 9.3). R

Genetic Medicine for Hearing Loss: OTOF as Exemplar.

Millions of people worldwide have disabling hearing loss because one of their genes generates an incorrect version of some specific protein the ear requires for hearing. In many of these cases, delivering the correct version of the gene to a specific target cell within the inner ear has the potential to restore cochlear function to enable high-acuity physiologic hearing. Purpose: In this review, we outline our strategy for the development of genetic medicines with the potential to treat hearing loss. We will use the example of otoferlin gene (OTOF)-mediated hearing loss, a sensorineural hearin

Novel homozygous variant in the PDZD7 gene in a family with nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing loss.

Hearing loss is the most common sensory neural disorder in humans, and according to a WHO estimation, 5.5% (466 million) of people worldwide have disabling hearing loss. In this study, a Chinese family with prelingual sensorineural hearing loss was investigated. The affected individuals showed moderately severe hearing loss at all frequencies. Using target genome enrichment and high-throughput sequencing, the homozygous variant c.2372del; p.(Ser791fs) was identified in PDZD7. This variant lies in exon 15 of PDZD7 and results in a frame shift followed by an early stop codon. It is classified as

Association Between Early-Onset Osteoporosis With Hearing Loss and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis is a chronic systemic disease characterized by low bone mass, progressive microarchitectural deterioration and increased bone fragility. Hearing loss and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) have been found in patients diagnosed with osteoporosis over 65 years, however, there is lack of information about these conditions in young patients. Herein, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to provide evidence of the association between osteoporosis and audio-vestibular findings in young subjects. METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis were performe

Toward Personalized Diagnosis and Therapy for Hearing Loss: Insights From Cochlear Implants.

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is the most common sensory deficit, disabling nearly half a billion people worldwide. The cochlear implant (CI) has transformed the treatment of patients with SNHL, having restored hearing to more than 800,000 people. The success of CIs has inspired multidisciplinary efforts to address the unmet need for personalized, cellular-level diagnosis, and treatment of patients with SNHL. Current limitations include an inability to safely and accurately image at high resolution and biopsy the inner ear, precluding the use of key structural and molecular information dur

Interventions for children with deafblindness-An integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Deafblindness is a rare condition, and its prevalence has been reported to be approximately 1 in 27 000 new-borns worldwide. For individuals with deafblindness, lifelong interventions and support are needed to be able to develop communication, be active and preserve a good quality of life. Because little is known about what kind of support and interventions can be offered to children with deafblindness, the aim was to summarize and disseminate research findings regarding this topic. METHODS: Integrative review principles were employed. Systematic searches in eight databases and ad

Congenital hearing loss: a literature review of the genetic etiology in a Mexican population.

Hearing loss is the most frequent sensory disorder, with an incidence of 1:1500 live newborns. In more than 50% of patients, it is associated with a genetic cause, while in up to 30% of cases, it is related to syndromic entities. We performed a literature review of studies on congenital hearing loss of genetic origin in the Mexican population. We identified eight reports that showed that the pathogenic variants most frequently associated with hearing loss are related to the GJB2 gene, although in a low percentage (3%). Other mutations were identified in the GJB6, SLC26A4, or CHD23 genes. On th

Mutation analysis of the GSDME gene in a Chinese family with non-syndromic hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is considered one of the most common sensory nervous system defects, about 60% of which are caused by genetic factors. Mutations in the GSDME gene are responsible for post-lingual, progressive, autosomal dominant hearing loss. This study aimed to characterize the genetic mutations and clinical features of a Chinese GSDME family. METHODS: After clinical evaluations, high-throughput DNA sequencing was conducted using DNA samples from this family. Sanger sequencing was performed to verify the suspected variants. A detailed genotype and phenotype analysis were carried out

Sign advantage: Both children and adults' spatial expressions in sign are more informative than those in speech and gestures combined.

Expressing Left-Right relations is challenging for speaking-children. Yet, this challenge was absent for signing-children, possibly due to iconicity in the visual-spatial modality of expression. We investigate whether there is also a modality advantage when speaking-children's co-speech gestures are considered. Eight-year-old child and adult hearing monolingual Turkish speakers and deaf signers of Turkish-Sign-Language described pictures of objects in various spatial relations. Descriptions were coded for informativeness in speech, sign, and speech-gesture combinations for encoding Left-Right

Extended high-frequency audiometric analyses of tinnitus patients exhibiting normal hearing on conventional pure-tone audiometry.

BACKGROUND: While hearing loss is the greatest risk factor associated with developing tinnitus, some tinnitus patients exhibit no hearing loss on conventional pure-tone audiometry (PTA). OBJECTIVES: This study was developed to assess whether tinnitus patients with normal hearing as measured via conventional PTA would exhibit differences from normal controls upon extended high-frequency (EHF) audiometric evaluation. METHODS: In total, 102 tinnitus patients were separated into unilateral and bilateral tinnitus groups. Age- and sex-matched controls without tinnitus were enrolled. RESULTS: No s

Acute myeloid leukemia associated with CHARGE syndrome.

CHARGE syndrome is a malformation disorder with diverse phenotypes that shows autosomal dominance with heterozygous variants in the chromodomain helicase DNA-binding 7 (CHD7) gene. Only a few cases of CHARGE syndrome accompanied by neoplasm during childhood have been reported. We report the case of a girl with CHARGE syndrome who developed acute myelogenous leukemia at 12 years old. She had mild intellectual disability, and hearing loss with inner ear malformation, myopia, astigmatism, laryngotracheal malacia, hypogonadism, and clival hypoplasia, with a history of patent ductus arteriosus. Inherited causes of combined vision and hearing loss: clinical features and molecular genetics.

Combined vision and hearing loss, also known as dual sensory impairment, can occur in several genetic conditions, including ciliopathies such as Usher and Bardet-Biedl syndrome, mitochondrial DNA disorders and systemic diseases, such as CHARGE, Stickler, Waardenburg, Alport and Alstrom syndrome. The retinal phenotype may point to the diagnosis of such disorders. Herein, we aim to provide a comprehensive review of the molecular genetics and clinical features of the most common non-chromosomal inherited disorders to cause dual sensory impairment.

GoCC4All a pervasive technology to provide access to TV to the deafblind community.

Considering the importance of communication and independence for the deafblind community, this work presents findings of the use of technology to address the lack of information due to communication challenges among the deafblind community. Over time, many investigations have been carried out regarding this matter, but very few providing solution, which is why this study emerged, looking to making all the information broadcasted through television accessible for this community. The work team designed a technology (GoCC4All) to address the needs of the deafblind community. GoCC4All provides acc

Investigating age, hearing loss, and background noise effects on speaker-targeted head and eye movements in three-way conversations.

Although beamforming algorithms for hearing aids can enhance performance, the wearer's head may not always face the target talker, potentially limiting real-world benefits. This study aimed to determine the extent to which eye tracking improves the accuracy of locating the current talker in three-way conversations and to test the hypothesis that eye movements become more likely to track the target talker with increasing background noise levels, particularly in older and/or hearing-impaired listeners. Conversations between a participant and two confederates were held around a small table in qui

Visual Sequence Repetition Learning is Not Impaired in Signing DHH Children.

The auditory scaffolding hypothesis states that early experience with sound underpins the development of domain-general sequence processing abilities, supported by studies observing impaired sequence processing in deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. To test this hypothesis, we administered a sequence processing task to 77 DHH children who use American Sign Language (ASL) and 23 hearing monolingual children aged 7-12 years and found no performance difference between them after controlling for age and nonverbal intelligence. Additionally, neither spoken language comprehension scores nor hear

Expressive vocabulary development in children with moderate hearing loss - the impact of auditory variables and early consonant production.

In this study, the early expressive vocabulary development was investigated in a group of children with moderate hearing loss (HL). Size and development of expressive vocabulary from 18 30 months were analyzed and compared to a group of children with normal hearing (NH). For the children with HL, the impact of auditory variables on number of words were examined. The relationship of early consonant production to number of words produced of both groups were examined and the phonological complexity of reported words was compared between the groups. The results showed that children with HL (n = 8)
