Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) disease is an autosomal recessive disorder that results in accumulation of cholesterol and other lipids in late endosomes/lysosomes and leads to progressive neurodegeneration and premature death. The mechanism by which lipid accumulation causes neurodegeneration remains unclear. Inappropriate activation of microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system, has been implicated in several neurodegenerative disorders including NPC disease. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrates that NPC1 deficiency in mouse brains alters microglial morphology and incr

Adriamycin nephropathy is a model of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, characterized by proteinuria and progressive glomerulosclerosis and tubulointerstitial damage. In this study, we examined the role of complement in the etiology of adriamycin nephropathy in mice. We used mice deficient in C1q, factor D, C3, and CD59, and compared them with strain-matched controls. C3 deposition occurred in the glomeruli of wild-type mice as early as 48 h following a single i.v. injection of adriamycin. C3-deficient mice developed significantly less proteinuria and less podocyte injury at day 3 postadriamy

Zinc deficiency has long been known as acrodermatitis enteric dermatitis (congenital zinc deficiency). On the other hand, acquired zinc deficiency has attracted attention as a familiar disease in recent years. Epidemiological studies in Japan have shown that acquired zinc deficiency is more common than expected. It is also known that serum zinc levels fall markedly with age. In this report, several cases of acquired zinc deficiency that caused cheilitis are described. In all cases, the only symptom was cheilitis, the serum zinc level was low, and all cases were relieved by zinc supplementation

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article provides an update on the clinical presentation and management of neurologic disease related to key nutrient deficiencies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Major advances have been made in understanding the pathway related to vitamin B12 absorption and distribution. It is now known that deficiencies of vitamin B12 and copper have similar neurologic manifestations. Bariatric surgery is a risk factor for both. Alcoholism is just one of the many causes of thiamine deficiency. Early neurologic complications following bariatric surgery are often due to thiamine deficiency. Encephal

Patients with Fabry disease frequently develop left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and renal fibrosis. Due to heat intolerance and an inability to sweat, patients tend to avoid exposure to sunlight. We hypothesized that subsequent vitamin D deficiency may contribute to Fabry cardiomyopathy. This study investigated the vitamin D status and its association with LV mass and adverse clinical symptoms in patients with Fabry disease. 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) was measured in 111 patients who were genetically proven to have Fabry disease. LV mass and cardiomyopathy were assessed by magnetic resonan

OBJECTIVE: The role of routine endoscopic duodenal biopsies obtained during the evaluation of iron deficiency anaemia is being increasingly emphasized, but insufficiently applied. Diagnostic yield of this practice, mainly identification of coeliac disease, differs in different populations and geographic regions. The aim of this study is to assess the usefulness of routine duodenal biopsies during upper endoscopy in patients presenting with iron deficiency anaemia in Western Anatolia.
METHODS: Routine duodenal biopsies were evaluated over a 12-month period in 100 consecutive adult patients wit

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and identify its associated factors in patients with newly diagnosed childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (c-SLE). This retrospective study included patients with c-SLE aged ≤ 18 years treated at an academic tertiary center between January 2013 and December 2023. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) level < 20 ng/mL. A total of 192 patients with c-SLE were included (87% female; mean [SD] age, 12.1 [3.0] years). Lupus nephritis (LN) was identified in 92 patients (48.2%).

Oral contraceptives increase the natural incidence of venous thromboses of 1-2/10,000 women per year 3-to 4fold. Recent investigations have shown that during intake of desogestrel or gestodene containing formulations the risk is twice that with older low-dose ovulation inhibitors. This difference is larger in first time users than in women who had previously used an oral contraceptive. During pregnancy, the incidence of thromboses rises up to 10/10,000 women-years and post partum up to 40/10,000 women-years. In about 60 % of thromboses no causal explanation can be found. It is suggested that i

Sleep is a highly elaborate biological occurrence, necessitating the combined action and participation of diverse brain regions. The sleep-wake cycle is regulated by a multitude of factors, including various hormones produced by the hypothalamus and external stimuli. Sleep disorders can accelerate the progression of numerous diseases or directly trigger the onset of many health conditions. However, the specific regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. In recent years, the role of magnesium in sleep disorders has garnered considerable attention. Magnesium not only reduces the excitability of the n

Inflammatory diseases are conditions characterized by abnormal and often excessive immune responses, leading to tissue and organ inflammation. The complexity of these disorders arises from the intricate interplay of genetic factors and immune responses, which challenges conventional therapeutic approaches. However, the field of genetic manipulation has sparked unprecedented optimism in addressing these complex disorders. This review aims to comprehensively explore the application of gene therapy and gene editing in the context of inflammatory diseases, offering solutions that range from correc

Various studies have revealed the association of metabolic diseases with inflammation. Mitochondria are key organelles involved in metabolic regulation and important drivers of inflammation. However, it is uncertain whether the inhibition of mitochondrial protein translation results in the development of metabolic diseases, such that the metabolic benefits related to the inhibition of mitochondrial activity remain unclear. Mitochondrial methionyl-tRNA formyltransferase (Mtfmt) functions in the early stages of mitochondrial translation. In this study, we reveal that feeding with a high-fat diet

Vitamin D is customarily involved in maintaining bone and calcium homeostasis. However, contemporary studies have identified the implication of vitamin D in several cellular processes including cellular proliferation, differentiation, wound healing, repair and regulatory systems inclusive of host defence, immunity, and inflammation. Multiple studies have indicated corelations between low serum levels of vitamin D, perturbed pulmonary functions and enhanced incidences of inflammatory diseases. Almost all of the pulmonary diseases including acute lung injury, cystic fibrosis, asthma, COPD, Pneum

: Autoinflammatory diseases are characterised by fever and systemic inflammation, with potentially serious complications. Owing to the rarity of these diseases, evidence-based guidelines are lacking. In 2012, the European project Single Hub and Access point for paediatric Rheumatology in Europe (SHARE) was launched to optimise and disseminate regimens for the management of children and young adults with rheumatic diseases, facilitating the clinical practice of paediatricians and (paediatric) rheumatologists. One of the aims of SHARE was to provide evidence-based recommendations for the managem

There is increasing evidence for systemic effects of gastric H. pylori infection which may result in extragastrointestinal disorders. This review summarizes the available medical literature up to September 1999, identified through a MEDLINE research including own studies, regarding H. pylori and skin diseases. Due to current knowledge best evidence for a potential link of H. pylori infection exists for chronic urticaria although the data are still conflicting. Thus, the search for H. pylori should be included in the diagnostic management of chronic urticaria. With regard to other skin diseases

A total of 679 primary school children drawn from developed southern parts and underdeveloped eastern parts of Delhi were examined for ocular morbidity. Their age range was 5-15 years and both sexes had almost equal representation. The prevalence of eye diseases was relatively high. Over 40 percent of all the children studied had one or more ocular problems. Trachoma (18%) was the most common ocular morbidity followed by vitamin A deficiency (10.6%), visual acuity < 6/9 (7.4%) and apparent/latent squint (7.4%). In most of these eye disorders, the majority of the children came from the underdev

Vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for exacerbation of obstructive airway disease, a hallmark of which is mucus dehydration and plugging. Calcitriol (the active form of vitamin D) deficiency in cultured human airway epithelia resulted in increased SCNN1G and ATP1B1 mRNAs encoding subunits of ENaC and the Na-K pump compared with supplemented epithelia. These drive the absorption of airway surface liquid. Consistently, calcitriol-deficient epithelia absorbed liquid faster than supplemented epithelia. Calcitriol deficiency also increased amiloride-sensitive Isc and Gt without altering Na-K pum

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency and thalassemia are genetically independent hemolytic disorders. Co-inheritance of both disorders may affect red blood cell pathology to a greater extent than normally seen in either disorder alone. This study determines the prevalence and evaluates hematological changes of G-6-PD deficiency and thalassemia co-inheritance.
METHODS: G-6-PD deficiency was screened from 200 male thalassemia blood samples using a fluorescent spot test. Hematological parameters and red blood cell morphology were evaluated among G-6-PD defi
