Some etiologic possibilities which must be considered are foods, drugs, infection, inhalant sensitivity, psychic factors, physical agents, underlying connective tissue disease or neoplasm, insect bite or stings and genetic abnormalities. Scaly scalp is a common problem in the pediatric and adolescent population. The possible causes range from the commonly seen tinea capitis and seborrheic dermatitis to rare systemic diseases such as dermatomyositis and Letterer-Siwe disease. To investigate the capability of atopics to be sensitized to contact allergens, 143 hairdressers with hand eczema, who had been patch tested with the hairdresser's series, were studied. The 125 women and 18 men were grouped according to their personal atopic status. There were 45 eczematous atopics, 32 mucous membrane atopics and 66 non-atopics. The catchword "baboon syndrome" is used to denote a characteristic distribution pattern of systemic allergic contact dermatitis. Diffuse erythema of the buttocks, upper inner surface of the thighs, and axillae are characteristic features. We describe 3 cases provoked by ampicillin, nickel and mercury. The condition may be overlooked and suspected of being a textile dermatitis or seborrhoeic dermatitis of the elderly.

An outbreak of dermatitis among patients in a hemodialysis unit was traced to thiuram compounds, most likely coming from the hemodialysis apparatus itself. Eight of the 21 patients in the facility had allergic contact sensitivity to various thiuram compounds. Testing of patients from other hemodialysis units, in which different hemodialysis equipment was used, did not disclose sensitivity or dermatitis. In the affected patients, allergic contact sensitization of the skin probably resulted from the systemic circulation of an antigen during hemodialysis.
