Antibiotics are designed to affect gut microbiota and subsequently gut homeostasis. However, limited information exists about short- and long-term effects of early antibiotic intervention (EAI) on gut homeostasis (especially for the small intestine) of pigs following antibiotic withdrawal. We investigated the impact of EAI on specific bacterial communities, microbial metabolites and mucosal immune parameters in the small intestine of later-growth-stage pigs fed with diets differing in CP levels. Eighteen litters of piglets were fed creep feed with or without antibiotics from day 7 to day 42. A

Renovascular hypertension is characterized by activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, blunted natriuretic responses, and elevated sympathetic nerve activity. Excess dietary salt intake exaggerates arterial blood pressure (ABP) in multiple models of experimental hypertension. The present study tested whether a high-salt diet exaggerated ABP and vascular dysfunction in a 2-kidney, 1-clip (2K1C) murine model. Male C57BL/6J mice (8-12 wk) were randomly assigned, and fed a 0.1% or 4.0% NaCl diet, and instrumented with telemetry units to measure ABP. Then, the 2K1C model was produced

BACKGROUND: Ageing, a physiological process, and obesity, a pathological condition, are both associated with several metabolic alterations including energy imbalance, altered body composition, chronic low-grade inflammation, lipotoxicity, glucotoxicity, insulin resistance and mitochondrial dysfunctions. During ageing mitochondrial capacity declines and oxidative stress increases. However, the biphasic model of age-associated mitochondrial functions indicates that, before the ageing-associated decrease in mitochondrial respiration, this parameter increases in the transition from young adult to

Stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) were fed a diet containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-enriched Euglena glacilis (DHA-Euglena) as the protein source from 5 weeks of age. The effects on endothelial functions were investigated by perfusion experimentation using mesenteric vasculature, and compared with the effects of antihypertensive drugs. (1) At 13 weeks of age, SHRSP fed the DHA-Euglena diet showed an average blood pressure of 220 mmHg, which was 20 mmHg lower (p < 0.05) than that in the control group, while SHRSP of the captopril-treated group (angiotensin I converting en

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to severe neurological dysfunction with significant nutritional alterations. These alterations are closely associated with gut dysbiosis and neurogenic gut dysfunction after SCI, creating complex interactions that further exacerbate metabolic disturbances and impede neurological recovery. In the context of SCI, diet not only fulfills basic nutritional needs but also serves as an important therapeutic tool to modulate these interactions. This review provides a broad overview of existing research findings, analyzes the impact of existing dietary interventions on SC

Thiamine (vitamin B1) is key in maintaining cellular health and energy metabolism. Thiamine is required for proper functioning of enzymes involved in glucose metabolism, which is critical for providing energy to cells. This energy is essential for various cellular processes, including DNA repair mechanisms. In addition, it is a prerequisite for the functioning of key enzymes in the biosynthesis of pentose sugars, which are essential in the synthesis of nucleic acids. Additionally, thiamine has antioxidant properties that help reduce oxidative stress in cells; thus, by relieving this stress, th

Lifestyle changes should be the main basis for any treatment for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), aiming to increase energy expenditure, reduce energy intake and improve the quality of nutrients consumed. As it is a multifactorial disease, approaches such as physical exercise, a better dietary pattern, and possible pharmacological intervention are shown to be more efficient when used simultaneously to the detriment of their applications. The main treatment for MAFLD is a lifestyle change consisting of diet, activity, exercise, and weight loss. The variables for tra

Migraine, a prevalent neurological condition and the third most common disease globally, places a significant economic burden on society. Despite extensive research efforts, the precise underlying mechanism of the disease remains incompletely comprehended. Nevertheless, it is established that the activation and sensitization of the trigeminal system are crucial during migraine attacks, and specific substances have been recognized for their distinct involvement in the pathomechanism of migraine. Recently, an expanding body of data indicates that migraine attacks can be prevented and treated thr

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: It is important for pregnant and breastfeeding women who adhere to a strict vegetarian diet to take appropriate steps to avoid vitamin B12 deficiency in their infants.
ABSTRACT: Vitamin B12 deficiency is rare during infancy. The initial symptoms of this deficiency are subtle and may include irritability, failure to thrive with a decline in growth rate, apathy, anorexia, refusal of solid foods, megaloblastic anemia, and developmental regression. The case presented here involves an 8-month-old male infant who showed neurological symptoms such as decreased activity, increas

Following its approval in the Philippines in July 2021, provitamin A-rich "Golden Rice" is set to become the worlds' first commercialized genetically modified crop with direct consumer benefits. Despite supplementation and fortification programs, the burden of micronutrient deficiencies remains high. For Golden Rice to be successful in reducing vitamin A deficiency, it needs to be taken up by food systems and integrated into consumer diets. Despite negative information often being associated with genetic engineering, evidence suggests that consumers react positively to Golden Rice. Thus, it of

In dramatic contrast to rats on a control diet, rats maintained on a high-fat diet (HFD) failed to activate brown adipose tissue (BAT) during cooling despite robust increases in their BAT activity following direct activation of their BAT sympathetic premotor neurons in the raphe pallidus. Cervical vagotomy or blockade of glutamate receptors in the nucleus of the tractus solitarii (NTS) reversed the HFD-induced inhibition of cold-evoked BAT activity. Thus, a HFD does not prevent rats from mounting a robust, centrally driven BAT thermogenesis; however, a HFD does alter a vagal afferent input to

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In many countries, persons over 65 are one of the fastest growing segments of the population. Mobility disability is one of the major risk factors for morbidity and mortality in this age group. There is increasing evidence that improved nutrition can reduce the risk of developing disability in older age. This review summarizes the recent literature showing the associations between different nutrients and mobility-related outcomes in older adults.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies suggested an association between low intake and low serum concentrations of micronutrients, such

Metabolic alterations are a key player involved in the onset of Alzheimer disease pathophysiology and, in this review, we focus on diet, metabolic rate, and neuronal size differences that have all been shown to play etiological and pathological roles in Alzheimer disease. Specifically, one of the earliest manifestations of brain metabolic depression in these patients is a sustained high caloric intake meaning that general diet is an important factor to take in account. Moreover, atrophy in the vasculature and a reduced glucose transporter activity for the vessels is also a common feature in Al

The objective of this work was to evaluate reproductive function in adult male rats exposed to ethanol since puberty. Male Wistar rats, 50 days old, received a liquid diet with 36% of the daily calories derived from ethanol or an isocaloric control diet for 55 days. The ethanol treatment impaired sexual behavior and only 22% of these rats reached ejaculation. The fertility of ethanol-treated animals was significantly reduced, mainly after natural mating. Serum testosterone levels, daily sperm production and sperm count in the epididymis were also significantly diminished after ethanol treatmen

Effects of phenyl N-tert-butyl nitrone (PBN), a spin-trapping agent, on the development of frank cancers were examined in male Wistar rats fed with a choline-deficient, l-amino acid-defined (CDAA) diet for 70 weeks. PBN (0.065% in the drinking water) reduced incidences, multiplicities and possibly sizes of both hepatocellular adenomas and carcinomas when administered for all 70 weeks or only for the first 26 weeks, and those of carcinomas but not adenomas, when administered only for the last 44 weeks. These results indicate that PBN can prevent the development of frank HCCs in the CDAA diet mo

A case of kwashiorkor in a British child of Caucasian origin is described. The 5-year-old boy was referred to hospital for investigation of a persistent anaemia, but on examination was found to have classical features of kwashiorkor. He was stunted with both height and weight below the fifth centile and had mild pitting oedema in both legs. His hair was pale and easily pluckable and a soft liver edge was palpable. Plasma albumin concentration was 16 g/l and the plasma amino acid pattern, which revealed markedly reduced levels of essential but normal to high non-essential amino acids, was simil

Despite the great impairment in water balance occurring in the Brattleboro rat, homozygous for diabetes insipidus and lacking hypothalamic arginine-vasopressin, fed a normal sodium diet, the metabolic effects of a chronic sodium deprivation were similar in the Brattleboro rat and in the Long-Evans rat used as control. Concomitantly, whilst the plasma and adrenal concentrations of aldosterone were two fold lower in the Brattleboro rat than in the Long-Evans rat fed a normal diet, after ten days of sodium restriction they became similar in the two groups of rats; sodium deprivation greatly incre

Many studies have been done recently to determine the role of various stresses on the heart and peripheral vasculature. Although damage to coronary arteries and renal vessels has been well described, the ear as an end-organ in small vessel disease has been largely neglected. In a previous study, we examined the effects of noise, hypertension, and an atherogenic diet on the microvasculature of the cochleas in rats. The present study examines the effects of these stresses on the hearts of the same rats. The technique used to examine microvascular blood flow was the injection of unlabeled microsp

An infant with uremia due to congenital renal hypoplasia was treated with oral aluminum hydroxide for 9 months in an attempt to reduce hyperphosphatemia. An increasingly painful osteopathy with pathological fractures ensued with loss of thoracic wall stability and respiratory failure. Increased serum aluminium levels and histochemically proved deposits of aluminium at the mineralisation front between calcified and noncalcified osteoid were demonstrated. In the context of recent findings concerning aluminium bone toxicity it is beyond doubt that this phosphate binding agent was detrimental for
