Consistent spectro-spatial features of human ECoG successfully decode naturalistic behavioral states.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the neural correlates of naturalistic behavior is critical for extending and confirming the results obtained from t … c behaviors such as "Talking" and "Watching TV" were labeled from manually annotated videos. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was used to classify the two behavioral states. The parameters learned from the LDA were then used to determine whether the neural signatures driving classification performance are consistent across the participants. MAIN RESULTS: Spectro-spa …

Relevance of accurate QT correction in the assessment of long QT syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a genetic cardiac disease, where the corrected QT (QTc) interval is prolonged. It can cause arrhythmias and lead to a sudden cardiac death. Duration of the QT interval depends on the heart rate and this dependency is treated with QT correction. However, the current QT correction methods have well known problems and limitations. OBJECTIVE: We study the relevance of QT correction method in evaluating the risk of LQTS. We evaluate the reliability of the present and recently developed QT correction methods to discriminate LQTS subjects from healthy controls.

External Validation of the Discriminative Validity of the ReSVinet Score and Development of Simplified ReSVinet Scores in Secondary Care.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on how to best quantify disease severity in infants with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and/or bronchiolitis; this lack of a sufficiently validated score complicates the provision of clinical care and, the evaluation of trials of therapeutics and vaccines. The ReSVinet score appears to be one of the most promising; however, it is too time consuming to be incorporated into routine clinical care. We aimed to develop and externally validate simplified versions of this score. METHODS: Data from a multinational (the Netherlands, Spain, and United Kingdom) multi

External validation of prognostic scores and comparison of predictive accuracy for patients with colorectal cancer with peritoneal metastases considered for cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Prognostic scores are developed to facilitate the selection of patients with colorectal cancer peritoneal metastases (CRPM) for treatment with cytoreductive surgery (CRS) ± intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC). Three prominent prognostic scores are the Peritoneal Surface Disease Severity Score (PSDSS), the Colorectal Peritoneal Metastases Prognostic Surgical Score (COMPASS), and the modified COloREctal-Pc (mCOREP). We externally validate these scores and compare their predictive accuracy. METHODS: Data from consecutive CRPM patients who underwent CRS/IPC from 1996 to

Predicting Insulin Resistance in a Pediatric Population With Obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Insulin resistance (IR) affects children and adolescents with obesity and early diagnosis is crucial to prevent long-term consequences. Our aim was to identify predictors of IR and develop a multivariate model to accurately predict IR. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of demographical, clinical, and biochemical data from a cohort of patients attending a specialized Paediatric Nutrition Unit in Portugal over a 20-year period. We developed multivariate regression models to predict IR. The participants were randomly divided into 2 groups: a model group for developing

Severe aortic stenosis echocardiographic thresholds revisited.

BACKGROUND: In view of inconsistencies in threshold values of severe aortic stenosis (AS) hemodynamic indices, it is unclear what is the relative contribution of each variable in a binary classification of AS based on aortic valve replacement (AVR) indication. We aimed to assess relative discriminative value and optimal threshold of each constituent hemodynamic parameter for this classification and confirm additional prognostic value. METHODS: Echocardiography studies of 168 patients with ≥ moderate AS were included. AS types were dichotomized into Group-A, comprising moderate and Normal-Flow

Use of high-sensitivity digital ELISA improves the diagnostic performance of circulating brain-specific proteins for detection of traumatic brain injury during triage.

Background: Historically, limited sensitivity associated with traditional immunoassay methods has prevented the use of brain-specific proteins as blood biomarkers of traumatic brain injury (TBI) during triage, as these proteins exhibit low circulating concentrations. Digital ELISA is a newly-developed technique that is up to 1000 times more sensitive than conventional ELISA methods. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of digital ELISA over conventional ELISA improves the performance of brain-specific proteins as blood biomarkers of TBI during triage. Methods: Blood was sa
