PURPOSE: To assess the level of plasma glutathione in patients with untreated primary open-angle glaucoma.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with newly diagnosed primary open-angle glaucoma and 34 age- and gender-matched control subjects were subjected to a blood analysis to detect the level of circulating glutathione in its reduced and oxidized forms. The effect of age, gender, and systemic blood pressure on circulating glutathione levels was also analyzed.

To investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of garlicin for treatment of unstable angina pectoris (UAP), garlicin injectio was intravenously dripped 60 mg/day in 34 cases for 10 days. Nitroglycerine was used in 21 cases of the control group. The results showed that the total effective rates in improving symptoms and electrocardiogram after garlicin treatment were respectively 82% and 62%, and that the plasma endothelin and blood sugar levels were markedly lowered in cases with hyperglycemia.

The concentration of thiram in aqueous solution decreases by 50-75% within 20 min in the presence of cut pieces of apple, cucumber or celeriac with a section surface area of 160 cm2 each. A previous study has shown that allicin produces changes in aqueous humor dynamics, and this study was conducted to examine possible cellular mechanisms. In rabbit nonpigmented ciliary epithelial cells, basal levels of [Ca2+]i were determined to be 164 +/- 34 nM. Allicin, a sulfhydryl-reactive agent, induced Ca2+ transients at 0.01 mM and at 0.2 mM, the Ca2+ transient peaked at 732 +/- 35 nM. Rolling mouse Nagoya (RMN), an ataxia mutant mouse, is adequate to checking up the efficacy of drugs on the ataxic movement disorders. The effects of some drugs on the ataxia of RMN were investigated by open field study. The drugs administered to RMN were as follows: TRH, FLA-63, DL-threo-DOPS, phenoxybenzamine and propranolol.
