Development and internal validation of a nomogram to predict postoperative atrial fibrillation in elderly patients with lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: The elderly are at high risk of developing postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after lung resection, which is more likely to trigger serious complications such as heart failure, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, and ischemic stroke, seriously affecting the recovery and prognosis of patients. This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram for predicting POAF in elderly lung cancer patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 960 elderly patients undergoing thoracoscopic lung cancer surgery at Zhoushan Hospital from January 2022 to Decembe

Cardiovascular safety of biologic therapies in patients with severe asthma: a nationwide cohort study in Belgium.

BACKGROUND: In last decades, biologic therapies have been approved for severe allergic and/or eosinophilic asthma. Limited studies have investigated the effect of biologics on (acute) cardiovascular events, which have reported conflicting results. We aimed to investigate the potential cardiovascular risk of anti-immunoglobulin(Ig)-E (omalizumab) and anti-interleukin(IL)-5/IL5 receptor (IL5R) therapies (mepolizumab and benralizumab) in patients with severe asthma compared with non-biologic users. METHODS: Adult asthma patients eligible for biologics were identified in Belgian nationwide data b

Understanding the impact of racism on surgical outcomes in settler nation-states USA and Canada: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: To improve surgical quality and safety, health systems must prioritise equitable care for surgical patients. Racialised patients experience worse postoperative outcomes when compared with non-racialised surgical patients in settler colonial nation-states. Identifying preventable adverse outcomes for equity-deserving patient populations is an important starting point to begin to address these gaps in care. To derive literature-based estimates of the outcome gap for racialised surgical patients, we will systematically review and meta-analyse rates of adverse postoperative events as

Acute myeloid leukemia causing acute thrombosis of the coronary arteries: a case report.

BACKGROUND: This case report demonstrates acute myeloid leukemia causing acute thrombosis of coronary arteries with anterolateral ST elevation myocardial infarction and ventricular tachycardia in an otherwise healthy woman. Few case reports have been documented on patients with concomitant conditions of acute myeloid leukemia and acute myocardial infarction, and it is important to note that prognosis for patients with both is worse than that of either condition. While both conditions together are rare, other non-atherosclerotic causes of acute coronary syndromes are likewise important consider

Biological and Clinical Consequences of Integrin Binding via a Rogue RGD Motif in the SARS CoV-2 Spike Protein.

Although ACE2 (angiotensin converting enzyme 2) is considered the primary receptor for CoV-2 cell entry, recent reports suggest that alternative pathways may contribute. This paper considers the hypothesis that viral binding to cell-surface integrins may contribute to the high infectivity and widespread extra-pulmonary impacts of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This potential is suggested on the basis of the emergence of an RGD (arginine-glycine-aspartate) sequence in the receptor-binding domain of the spike protein. RGD is a motif commonly used by viruses to bind cell-surface integrins. Numerous signal
