Emerging role of copper in the pathophysiology of spinal cord injury.

Copper is a trace element that plays an important role in neuronal development, maturation, and function. It also acts as a cofactor for various copper-binding proteins or serves as an active component of their structure. Acquired copper deficiency has been associated with numerous neurological diseases. Recent research has demonstrated that serum copper concentrations are elevated following spinal cord injury, similar to the elevated copper levels observed after ischemic insult in a rat model of myocardial infarction. This suggests that spinal cord damage may impair the effective utilization

Categorization of drivers of change for emerging food safety risks.

The emergence of food safety risks can be influenced by various causes, also known as drivers of change. Understanding the characteristics related to the manageability of these drivers and the health impact of their associated hazards is critical for effective food safety management and resource allocation. This study aims to categorize drivers of change for known food safety hazards based on their impact on human health and their manageability. Identified drivers were categorized and ranked through an expert survey and a PROMETHEE multi-criteria analysis. The weighted performance criteria are

A rare emergency department diagnosis of May-Thurner syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a frequent and serious emergency department (ED) diagnosis. When clinical risk stratification tools do not adequately explain the patient's presentation, physicians must consider less common underlying causes. CASE: A 76-year-old male with chronic venous stasis presented to the emergency department with progressive bilateral leg swelling (left greater than right) and shortness of breath over one month, with acute worsening over 3 days. He was found to have pronounced asymmetric lower extremity edema and a new oxygen requirement. CT pulmonary angio

Emergency radiology in displaced populations: imaging and practical challenges.

Migrants and refugees tend to use emergency departments as their primary source of care, leading to a substantial increase in emergency radiological imaging. Migrants and refugees have risk factors, such as low vaccination rates, poor hygiene, malnutrition, and inadequate self-care, which increase their risk of contracting infectious diseases. For example, the prevalence of tuberculosis among refugee populations in host countries is increasing, and imaging findings related to tuberculosis are frequently observed by radiologists. Strengthening screening programs in host countries for tuberculos

Nutritional Supplements and Cosmetic Formulations: A Review of Emerging Allergens.

Nutritional supplements and topical formulations are increasingly implicated in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), yet their allergenic potential remains underrecognized due to inconsistent regulatory oversight, limited provider awareness, and the misconception that "natural" products are inherently safe. To identify emerging allergens in supplements and cosmetics, characterize associated ACD reactions, and highlight diagnostic and regulatory challenges. A systematic review of PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and CENTRAL databases was conducted to evaluate reports of ACD linked to diet

PDE4 Inhibitor-Responsive Dermatoses: An Emerging Concept in Dermatology.

Many inflammatory skin conditions share mechanistic pathways involving multiple receptors and cytokines. Perhaps there is no better endorsement of this idea than the foundational concept of "steroid-responsive dermatoses." Similarly, targeting the phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) enzyme, which exists at the crux of several pathways that contribute to inflammatory skin diseases, offers an avenue by which the pathogenesis of multiple conditions may be interrupted. This suggests that PDE4 inhibitors may assume a similar complementary framework for treating "PDE4 inhibitor-responsive dermatoses." Certai

Emerging Treatments in Neonatal Fungal Infections: Progress and Prospects.

Fungal infections in neonates are potentially life threatening. The differential diagnosis for neonatal rashes is extensive, with common culprits including both bacteria and fungi. Candida albicans is the predominant fungal pathogen, causing infections that range from superficial disease to severe systemic conditions, including sepsis and meningitis. Neonates, especially those who are preterm, are particularly susceptible because of developmentally immature immune systems and the use of invasive procedures and devices in neonatal intensive care units. Congenital cutaneous candidiasis, acquired

Neutrophils: emerging perspectives on the pathogenesis of oral mucosal diseases.

Neutrophils, as the predominant effector cells of innate immunity and the first line of defense at the oral mucosal barrier, play pivotal yet complex roles in both immune defense and pathological damage within the unique oral environment. The oral mucosa, continuously exposed to physical, chemical, and dense microbial challenges, necessitates a dynamic and robust immune response. Recent evidence highlights that neutrophils are not merely transient defenders but key regulators whose functions are profoundly shaped by the specific milieu of the oral cavity, differing significantly from other muc

Keratoconus with two consecutive re-emergences: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus is a common disease in clinical practice, and deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty(DALK) is a conventional treatment for keratoconus, which is effective and not easy to recur after surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: The author presents a rare case report involving a 21-year-old patient with Consecutive re-emergences of Keratoconus. He underwent DALK for keratoconus in his left eye in 2012 and experienced re-emergence 3 years later, followed by a second deep lamellar keratoplasty in the same year. In 2019, the patient experienced re-emergence of keratoconus and underwent a thir

Besnoitosis in Iran: An emerging parasitic threat to livestock and wildlife.

Besnoitiosis is a chronic and emerging parasitic disease caused by protozoa belonging to the genus Besnoitia. The disease is economically and ecologically threatening livestock and wildlife in Iran. Besnoitia caprae infecting goats can lead to cyst formation in host tissues and cause reproductive symptoms, resulting in economic losses due to abortions and/or reduced productive efficiency. Its significance is particularly pronounced in provinces such as Fars and Kermanو attributed to high goat population density, climatic conditions favoring transmission, and specific animal husbandry practices

Reoviral Hepatitis in Young Turkey Poults-An Emerging Problem.

From January 2019 to April 2020, the Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (MVDL) received cases of hepatitis and spiking mortality in young turkey poults (average age 15.5 days) from multiple turkey-producing states. Meat-type turkeys were mainly affected, with a few cases in breeders. Of 188 cases, 88 (47.5%) tested positive for reovirus by virus isolation, with most of the positive cases from 7 to 14-day-old birds (n = 42). Gross lesions consisted of hepatosplenomegaly with acute, multifocal necrosis in both liver and spleen. Microscopically, liver sections showed congestion of hepatic

Powassan and other emerging neuroinvasive arboviruses in North America.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) represent a group of pathogens with increasing global relevance, some of which cause neuroinvasive disease. Transmitted by arthropod vectors and maintained by a variety of primary and amplifying hosts, epidemics are dependent on numerous environmental and anthropogenic factors. This review serves to highlight several important neuroinvasive arboviruses relevant to North America and discuss the neurologic presentations, diagnosis, outcomes, and future trends. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent shifts in the epidemiology and ecology of arboviruses i
