Alcohol use disorders and pneumonia: susceptibility and severity.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) represents a major public health issue that produces far-reaching physiological effects. AUD is an underappreciated, yet critical risk factor clinicians need to be aware of and screen for to integrate preventive and therapeutic strategies when dealing with pneumonia in this vulnerable population. This research paper investigates the link between AUD and pneumonia by examining both the elevated risk of lung infection and the intensified disease severity. AREAS COVERED: The available epidemiological data show that people with AUD experience elevated rate

Semiparametric estimator for the covariate-specific receiver operating characteristic curve.

The study of the predictive ability of a marker is mainly based on the accuracy measures provided by the so-called confusion matrix. Besides, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve has become a popular index for summarizing the overall accuracy of a marker. However, the nature of the relationship between the marker and the outcome, and the role that potential confounders play in this relationship could be fundamental in order to extrapolate the observed results. Directed acyclic graphs commonly used in epidemiology and in causality, could provide good feedback for learning

Exercise in patients with metastatic prostate cancer: A comprehensive review.

Prostate cancer (PC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide. Metastatic PC remains an incurable disease, with the androgen receptor (AR) pathway being the primary driver of tumor progression and the main target for therapeutic strategies. Thus, patients usually undergo long-term treatments, particularly androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), which can worsen the intrinsic deterioration in quality of life (QoL) caused by the disease burden. Increasing evidence supports the use of physical activity (PA) and structured exercise (EX) as complementary measures to mitigate treatment-relate

Mitigating Sex-Related Biases to Elucidate the Autism Phenotype.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is commonly considered a male-dominant condition, with epidemiological estimates finding that approximately 3 to 4 males are diagnosed for every female. An overwhelming majority of the studies used to establish this sex ratio were conducted with participants ascertained based on having first met clinical criteria, which may obscure qualitative differences between males and females and omits females who do not meet male-biased criteria. Our recently published data, which used a prospectively identified sample of children at high familial likelihood for ASD, correc

Fright of Long-Haul Flights: Focus on Travel-Associated Thrombosis.

Travel-related thrombosis (TRT), encompassing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), poses a significant health risk associated with long-haul travel. Prolonged immobility, dehydration, and cabin pressure changes during flights contribute to venous stasis, hypoxia, and hypercoagulability, collectively increasing the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). While the absolute risk of TRT is relatively low in the population overall, it rises significantly among high-risk groups, including individuals with a history of VTE, thrombophilia, pregnancy, or recent surgery. This review ex

Trichuris infection in captive non-human primates in zoological gardens in Spain.

Currently, there is limited available information on the epidemiology of parasitic infections in captive non-human primates (NHPs) and their zoonotic potential. However, numerous cases of helminth infections in NHPs have been documented in several zoos around the world, with one of the most prevalent being those of the genus Trichuris. The main objective of this study is to investigate the occurrence of infection by Trichuris spp. in primates from zoological gardens in Spain and to ascertain, at the species level, the specific Trichuris species harbored by these hosts by using mitochondrial an

High genetic variability in Taenia multiceps larvae: A mitochondrial DNA-based study of sheep isolates using CO1 and NADH1 genes.

Coenurus cerebralis, the larval stage of Taenia multiceps, is a significant parasitic threat to small ruminants, yet its molecular diversity remains underexplored in many endemic regions. This study investigated the genetic variability of C. cerebralis from sheep in Elazig province, Türkiye, by analyzing mitochondrial CO1 (812 bp) and NADH1 (498 bp) gene regions. Sequence data from 39 isolates confirmed the presence of T. multiceps, with 21 CO1 and 17 NADH1 haplotypes identified over half of which were singletons. Most polymorphic sites were parsimony-informative, indicating meaningful evoluti

The aim of this paper was to describe the activities carried out by the National Poliovirus Laboratory (LNP) and the Spanish Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) Surveillance Network. The LNP coordinates the network since 1998 and is responsible for the characterization of polioviruses (PV) and other enteroviruses (EV) detected, using cell culture and molecular methods. It is annually accredited by WHO and represents Spain in the World Health Organization European Polio Laboratory Network. In addition to the reported AFP cases, the network has analyzed since its creation an average of 9,000 clinical

Detection of leptospiral antibodies and DNA in freshwater fish.

Leptospirosis is an important zoonotic disease that is maintained in populations due to chronic kidney infection of reservoir mammals. Previous work from our lab has identified rodents, voles, shrews, chipmunks and several species of amphibians and reptiles as hosts of Leptospira spp. in the Cumberland Gap Region of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. The aim of this study was to determine if fish contribute to the maintenance of the pathogen in the aquatic environment. Fish (n = 238), belonging to 19 genera, were collected from seven different locations in the Powell River in East Tennessee. F

High prevalence and risk factors of feline leukemia virus infection in Chilean urban cats (Felis catus).

Feline Leukemia Virus is a retrovirus causing fatal disease in domestic cats. While FeLV has been controlled in many countries, it remains a major concern in Latin American countries. This study conducted an epidemiological survey of FeLV in 182 Chilean domestic cats using PCR to detect provirus infection. The results were analysed using Multivariate Logistic Regression to examine risk factors associated with FeLV detection. The FeLV prevalence was 54.95 %, and statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) were found for two protective factors and one risk factor. Cats from Concepcion city
