Anorectal manifestations are commonplace in patients with HIV infection. However, standardized or rational treatment of these conditions has not been proposed and many patients are denied adequate treatment based on fear of complications. This review looks critically at the available literature to draw conclusions about treatment, results and complications of surgery for anorectal problems in these patients.

Socio-cultural factors play a contributory role in presentation and symptomatology of affective illness. Cultural shock, communication barriers, fear of loss of racial identity, different child rearing attitudes and dietary restrictions may all contribute towards the manifestation of reactive depression. An understanding of the immigrant's background will greatly help the therapist in management of his patient.

A middle-aged HIV-infected man could prove to be a rare exception to the general course of the AIDS epidemic. Public officials hope the man's highly resistant strain of HIV, which has quickly progressed to AIDS, will not become the feared plague it proved to be 20 years ago.

Cardiotoxicity is one of the most feared side effects of chemotherapy with enhanced morbidity and mortality in survivors. Arrhythmia, heart failure, myocardial ischemia, hypertension, and thromboembolism are commonly reported as side effects. Hereby, we are reporting a case of severe mitral regurgitation as a complication of chemotherapy.

This manuscript presents a case report of transient global amnesia with bilateral hippocampal lesions which might be triggered by the fear of getting infected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The purpose of this article is to facilitate the clinicians in understanding that an increasing number of patients with transient global amnesia have been reported during the COVID-19 global outbreak.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most frequently performed minimally invasive interventions. Inflammation during acute or subacute cholecystitis and fear of biliary duct injury can lead to unintentional remnant gall bladder retention. Diagnosing a remnant gall bladder can be challenging, and misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis is common. Once diagnosed, completion of the cholecystectomy is recommended, which can be performed laparoscopically.

Blood-Injury-Injection Phobia (BIIP) is a subtype of specific phobia, characterized by fear and avoidance of seeing blood, an injury, or receiving an injection. In the current case report, we describe the treatment of BIIP in a young man with mental retardation. The multicomponent treatment consisted of fading (graduated exposure), modeling, noncontingent and differential reinforcement, presession anxiolytic medication, and topical analgesic cream.

The opposition of Cato the Elder and other traditionalists to the introduction of Greek medicine in Rome by Archagathus was the result of several factors: political strife in the Roman nobility, hostility against Greek culture, fear of Archagathus' surgical and pharmaceutical treatments, and loathing for the mercenary character of the medical profession, which was regarded as a sign of luxury.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is unique in its requirement of an external stressor for the development of disease, leading to dysregulated mood, intrusive memories, and avoidance symptoms. Over the past decade, insights from human neuroimaging, mechanistic neural circuitry studies in animal models, and genomic work have revolutionized our understanding of this psychiatric illness, with emerging data from large-scale PTSD genome-wide association studies providing novel insights into the mechanism of PTSD. Despite these advances, therapeutic interventions remain limited, and psychotherapy

It is known that fear responses to clearly identified threats can inhibit motion, slowing down gait and inducing postural freezing. Nonetheless, it is less clear how anxiety, which emerges during threat anticipation, affects gait parameters. In the present work, we used a threat-of-scream paradigm to study the effects of anxiety on gait. Twenty-five participants (15 female, aged 23.4 ± 1.8) were instructed to walk on a 5-m walking track, while motion was recorded in 3D, via a VICON system. Four alternating blocks, two "threat" and two "safe" blocks of 10 trials each, were signaled by colored s

BACKGROUND: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) present difficulties in self-regulation and interaction, which is a challenge for psychotherapists that is also addressed in BPD-specific interventions. Against this background, outpatient psychotherapists were surveyed about the factors playing a decisive role in their treatment offer for patients with BPD.
METHODS: Psychotherapists for adults were contacted via their email address published on the website of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung (Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians), 231 of whom answered an online qu

BACKGROUND: Trauma-focused therapies (TFTs) are first-line treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, TFTs are under-utilised, partly due to clinicians' and patients' fear that TFT is too challenging or harmful. We review the qualitative studies on how adults with PTSD experience TFTs to enhance the understanding of user perspectives, therapeutic processes, and outcomes.
METHODS: PubMed, PsychINFO and PTSDPubs were searched between October 1st and November 30th, 2021. Study quality assessments were undertaken, and studies were analysed using a descriptive-interpretative app

The present study investigated the effects of expansive and contractive body displays on adaptive behavior and affective outcomes. Addressing limitations in past research, the effects were investigated in two different contexts (i.e., fear context and sadness context), compared with two types of control conditions and the moderating effects of motivational traits and symptoms of psychopathology were accounted for. A sample of 186 adults completed a fear experiment involving a mock job interview and a sadness experiment involving sad mood induction. For each experiment, participants were random

Major functions of the olfactory system include guiding ingestion and avoidance of environmental hazards. People with anosmia report reliance on others, for example to check the edibility of food, as their primary coping strategy. Facial expressions are a major source of non-verbal social information that can be used to guide approach and avoidance behaviour. Thus, it is of interest to explore whether a life-long absence of the sense of smell heightens sensitivity to others' facial emotions, particularly those depicting threat. In the present, online study 28 people with congenital anosmia (me

BACKGROUND: Sublime is a centuries old concept of emergent experience arising from immense and threatening awareness provoked by overwhelming fear and dread when faced with an incomprehensible situation as is common to autistic people. Extended Reality (XR) technologies have been used since the mid-1990s, in regulating emotions, behaviour and supporting social skill development for autistic people.
AIMS: To understand utility of XR technologies in creating immersive experiences for autistic people to alleviate anxiety and the relationship to the sublime.
METHOD: A State of the Art literature

BACKGROUND: The first-person experiences of people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an important area of research. It can support clinical and ethical practice, and nuance and expand on insights offered by diagnostic and treatment-oriented research approaches. In this study, we aimed to develop knowledge about how persons who were recently diagnosed with BPD experience being in relationships with themselves and others.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth life-world interviews with 12 women recently diagnosed with BPD. The interviews focused on their lived experiences of rela

Post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental disorders can be treated by an established psychotherapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). In EMDR, patients are confronted with traumatic memories while they are stimulated with alternating bilateral stimuli (ABS). How ABS affects the brain and whether ABS could be adapted to different patients or mental disorders is unknown. Interestingly, ABS reduced conditioned fear in mice. Yet, an approach to systematically test complex visual stimuli and compare respective differences in emotional processing based on semiautomate

PTSD is characterized by difficulties in accurately evaluating the threat value of sensory stimuli. While the role of canonical fear and threat neural circuitry in this ability has been well studied, recent lines of evidence suggest a need to include more emphasis on sensory processing in the conceptualization of PTSD symptomology. Specifically, studies have demonstrated a strong association between variability in sensory processing regions and the severity of PTSD symptoms. In this review, we summarize recent findings that underscore the importance of sensory processing in PTSD, in addition t

Rumination, or thinking repetitively about one's distress, is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Current theories suggest that rumination contributes to PTSD symptoms directly, by increasing negative reactions to trauma cues (i.e., symptom exacerbation), or represents a form of cognitive avoidance, if verbal ruminations are less distressing than trauma imagery. The goal of this study was to test the symptom exacerbation and cognitive avoidance accounts of trauma-focused rumination. We recruited 135 trauma-exposed participants (n = 60 diagnosed with PTSD) and randomly assig
