Regulatory behavior and frontal activity: Considering the role of revised-BIS in relative right frontal asymmetry.

Essential to human behavior are three core personality systems: approach, avoidance, and a regulatory system governing the two motivational systems. Decades of research has linked approach motivation with greater relative left frontal-cortical asymmetry. Other research has linked avoidance motivation with greater relative right frontal-cortical asymmetry. However, past work linking withdrawal motivation with greater relative right frontal asymmetry has been mixed. The current article reviews evidence suggesting that activation of the regulatory system (revised Behavioral Inhibition System [r-B

Age-related plasticity of the axon initial segment of cortical pyramidal cells in marmoset monkeys.

Structural plasticity of the axon initial segment (AIS), the site of action potential initiation, is observed as part of the normal early development of the cortex, as well as in association with injury and disease. Here, we show that structural AIS plasticity also occurs with normal aging in adult marmosets. Immunohistochemical techniques were used to reveal the extent of the AIS of layer 2/3A pyramidal cells in 8 neocortical areas. We found that the AIS length varied significantly between areas in young adult (2-3 years old) marmosets, with neurons in frontal area 14C having the longest AIS,

Increased Levels of Brain Adrenomedullin in the Neuropathology of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the loss of synaptic contacts caused in part by cytoskeleton disruption. Adrenomedullin (AM) is involved in physiological functions such as vasodilation, hormone secretion, antimicrobial activity, cellular growth, and angiogenesis. In neurons, AM and related peptides are associated with some structural and functional cytoskeletal proteins, causing microtubule destabilization. Here, we describe the relationships between AM and other signs of AD in clinical specimens. Frontal cortex from AD patients and controls were studied for AM, acetylated tubulin

Cerebral tuberculomas in a patient with hairy cell leukaemia treated with cladribine.

A 67-year-old man was treated with cladribine for hairy cell leukaemia. A few weeks later, he presented with persistent headaches, intermittent hypoesthesia of the right upper limb and language impairment. Brain CT scan showed 3 contrast-enhancing lesions. MRI revealed infracentimetric nodular lesions with restricted diffusion. One of the lesions was surgically removed and tested positive for acid-fast bacilli. Moreover, Mycobacterium tuberculosis was confirmed by PCR. Antituberculous drugs were prescribed for 12 months, with complete resolution of neurological deficits. This case highlights t

Surgical Treatment Alone of Cerebral Aspergillosis in Immunocompetent Patient.

Aspergillosis is a disease that predominantly affects immunocompromised patients. The incidence in immunocompetents is rare, and manifestation is generally pulmonary. Few reports in the literature refer to isolated cerebral aspergillosis in individuals with no chronic comorbidities. We describe a case of a 59-year-old rural worker without previous pathologies who had a partial convulsive crisis in a subtle form, with self-limiting and nonrecurrent secondary generalization. Diagnostic investigation demonstrated a subcortical tumorlike lesion in the right precentral gyrus by nuclear magnetic res

Social exclusion modulates event-related frontal theta and tracks ostracism distress in children.

Social exclusion is a potent elicitor of distress. Previous studies have shown that medial frontal theta oscillations are modulated by the experience of social exclusion. Using the Cyberball paradigm, we examined event-related dynamics of theta power in the EEG at medial frontal sites while children aged 8-12 years were exposed to conditions of fair play and social exclusion. Using an event-related design, we found that medial frontal theta oscillations (4-8Hz) increase during both early (i.e., 200-400ms) and late (i.e., 400-800ms) processing of rejection events during social exclusion relativ

Neuronal Response Gain Enhancement prior to Microsaccades.

Neuronal response gain enhancement is a classic signature of the allocation of covert visual attention without eye movements. However, microsaccades continuously occur during gaze fixation. Because these tiny eye movements are preceded by motor preparatory signals well before they are triggered, it may be the case that a corollary of such signals may cause enhancement, even without attentional cueing. In six different macaque monkeys and two different brain areas previously implicated in covert visual attention (superior colliculus and frontal eye fields), we show neuronal response gain enhanc

Rate of Hanger Reflex Occurrence: Unexpected Head Rotation on Fronto-temporal Head Compression.

When the head is encircled with a wire clothes hanger and the unilateral fronto-temporal region is compressed, the head rotates unexpectedly. As the mechanism is unclear, however, we have temporarily named this phenomenon as the "hanger reflex." We previously reported a case wherein this phenomenon was applied to treat cervical dystonia. Because little is known about this phenomenon, we determined how often this phenomenon is observed in healthy subjects. Study participants were 120 healthy Japanese adults (60 men and 60 women) aged 19-65 years. A wire clothes hanger was applied to each subjec

Supratentorial extraventricular anaplastic ependymoma in a child.

A young child presented to the emergency department of a tertiary care hospital with on and off headache, focal seizures involving the left side of the body, weakness of left upper and lower limbs and vomiting for 2 weeks. Examination showed an alert child with grade 4/5 powers in left upper and lower limbs. Blood investigations were normal. An urgent CT of the brain showed intra-axial mass in the right frontal cerebral cortex, superolateral to the right lateral ventricle. MRI of the brain showed supratentorial extraventricular mass of 5.20 × 3.70 × 3.80 cm, in the right frontal cortex, emitti

Isolated frontopolar cortex lesion: a case study.

BACKGROUND: The frontopolar cortex has been proposed to mediate prospective memory functioning, multitasking, relational integration, proces … of an isolated bilateral lesion of the frontopolar cortex, Brodmann area 10, with uniformly normal frontal lobe tests except for 2 abnormal findings of emotional intelligence. This lesion study supports the proposal that the medial frontopolar cortex is necessary for emotional processing of internal states.

We present a 26-year-old patient who did farming related work had an asymptomatic intracranial hydatid cyst. A calcified intracranial cystic mass was found on radiological investigations and the patient underwent surgery. The mass was totally excised. The histopathology result reported a hydatid cyst. There were no postoperative complications. Calcification is quite rare in cerebral hydatid cyst. The computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging provide information that is especially useful for preoperative diagnosis. Observing membrane detachment and daughter cysts during these investiga

Frontal EEG asymmetry and symptom response to cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with social anxiety disorder.

Although previous studies have shown that socially anxious individuals exhibit greater relative right frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) activity at rest, no studies have investigated whether improvements in symptoms as a result of treatment are associated with concomitant changes in resting brain activity. Regional EEG activity was measured at rest in 23 patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) before and after cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Results indicated that patients shifted significantly from greater relative right to greater relative left resting frontal brain activity from pr

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the superior frontal gyrus modulates craving for cigarettes.

BACKGROUND: Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have shown strong correlations between cue-elicited craving for cigarettes and activation of the superior frontal gyrus (SFG). Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) offers a noninvasive means to reversibly affect brain cortical activity, which can be applied to testing hypotheses about the causal role of SFG in modulating craving. METHODS: Fifteen volunteer smokers were recruited to investigate the effects of rTMS on subjective responses to smoking versus neutral cues and to controlled presentations of cigarette

Integration of "what" and "where" in frontal cortex during visual imagery of scenes.

Imagination is a key function for many human activities, such as reminiscing, learning, or planning. Unravelling its neuro-biological basis is paramount to grasp the essence of our thoughts. Previous neuroimaging studies have identified brain regions subserving the visualisation of "what?" (e.g. faces or objects) and "where?" (e.g. spatial layout) content of mental images. However, the functional role of a common set of involved regions - the frontal regions - and their interplay with the "what" and "where" regions, has remained largely unspecified. This study combines functional MRI and elect

Iowa gambling task in Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive impairments are common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) from the early stages. Recent studies reported that medicated PD patients have poor performances, with respect to age-matched healthy controls, in a decision-making task like the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), which detects the ability to alter choice behavior in response to fluctuations in reward contingencies. The IGT principally activates functions related to the orbitofrontal cortex, which plays a crucial role in the generation of outcome expectancies and processing of rewards. The analysis of IGT performances of PD pati

γ-band oscillations in fronto-central areas during performance of a sensorimotor integration task: a qEEG coherence study.

This study aimed to elucidate electrophysiological and cortical mechanisms involved in anticipatory actions when 23 healthy right-handed subjects had to catch a free falling object by qEEG γ-band (30-100 Hz). It is involved in cognitive processes, memory, spatial/temporal and proprioceptive factors. Our hypothesis is that an increase in γ coherence in frontal areas will be observed during moment preceding ball drop, due to their involvement in attention, planning, selection of movements, preparation and voluntary control of action and in central areas during moment after ball drop, due to thei

Orbitofrontal cortex volumes in medication naïve children with major depressive disorder: a magnetic resonance imaging study.

OBJECTIVES: Adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) are reported to have reduced orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) volumes, which could be related to decreased neuronal density. We conducted a study on medication naïve children with MDD to determine whether abnormalities of OFC are present early in the illness course. METHODS: Twenty seven medication naïve pediatric Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4(th) edition (DSM-IV) MDD patients (mean age +/- SD = 14.4 +/- 2.2 years; 10 males) and 26 healthy controls (mean age +/- SD = 14.4 +/- 2.4 years; 12 males) underwent a 1.5T mag

High functioning children with autism spectrum disorder: a novel test of multitasking.

High functioning children with a diagnosis of autism or Asperger's syndrome (HF-ASD) often experience difficulties organising goal-directed actions in their day-to-day lives, requiring support to schedule daily activities. This study aimed to capture these everyday difficulties experimentally using multitasking, a methodology that taps into the cognitive processes necessary for successful goal-directed activities in everyday life. We investigated multitasking in children with HF-ASD using a novel multitask test, the Battersea Multitask Paradigm. Thirty boys participated in the study, 14 with H
