We conducted surveillance for flavivirus infection in peridomestic rodents in Merida, Mexico in 2011-12. We captured 161 rodents inside private residences, using Sherman traps, including 86 house mice (Mus musculus) and 75 black rats (Rattus rattus). OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Mycoplasma genitalium is associated with balanitis and/or posthitis in a previous study of the role of M genitalium in men with acute non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU).
METHODS: In a previous study of men with acute NGU, the existence of balanitis and/or posthitis was recorded. Chlamydia trachomatis, M genitalium and ureaplasmas were sought in urethral swabs and urine using a direct fluorescent antibody test and in-house PCR, an in-house PCR and a culture method, respectively. The purpose of this study was to further characterize the phenotype of rats that have experienced prolonged postweaning social isolation, a paradigm that produces changes relevant to neuropsychiatric disorders. At weaning, male Wistar rats from three litters were housed socially (n = 12) or in isolation (n = 13) for 10 weeks. Isolated rats could see, hear and smell other rats. We report here a photoneural regulation of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity in the rat pineal gland. In the absence of the adrenergic stimulation following constant light exposure (LL) or denervation, pineal NOS activity is markedly reduced. A maximal drop is measured after 8 days in LL. Changes in the surgical treatment of glomus jugulare tumors at The House Ear Clinic have allowed complete resection in 85% of patients with minimal morbidity and no surgical mortalities. To determine the ecological and epidemiological significance of pigeon excrement in cryptococcosis in Mexico City, 251 samples of pigeon droppings were studied.
