Prevalence and consequences of malnutrition and malnourishment in older individuals admitted to hospital with a hip fracture.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Major causes of hip fractures are osteoporosis and falls, both of which are determined by nutrition. Information on the nutritional status of patients admitted to hospital with a hip fracture is lacking. In this study, we assessed determinants and adverse outcomes associated with malnutrition and malnourishment. METHODS: Nutritional status, assessed using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool protocol, was compared to age and residency prior to admission, and outcomes during hospital stay and at discharge. RESULTS: A total of 1239 patients admitted with a hip fract

Mental practice for treating upper extremity deficits in individuals with hemiparesis after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain (ischemic stroke) or the rupture of blood vessels within the brain (hemorrhagic stroke) and may lead to changes in perception, cognition, mood, speech, health-related quality of life, and function, such as difficulty walking and using the arm. Activity limitations (decreased function) of the upper extremity are a common finding for individuals living with stroke. Mental practice (MP) is a training method that uses cognitive rehearsal of activities to improve performance of those activities. OBJECTIVES: To determine wh

Individual Risk Prediction for Sight-Threatening Retinopathy of Prematurity Using Birth Characteristics.

IMPORTANCE: To prevent blindness, repeated infant eye examinations are performed to detect severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), yet only a small fraction of those screened need treatment. Early individual risk stratification would improve screening timing and efficiency and potentially reduce the risk of blindness. OBJECTIVES: To create and validate an easy-to-use prediction model using only birth characteristics and to describe a continuous hazard function for ROP treatment. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this retrospective cohort study, Swedish National Patient Registry data fro

Trends in characteristics of individuals who use methamphetamine in the United States, 2015-2018.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of self-reported methamphetamine use has remained relatively stable over the past decade; however, deaths and seizures involving methamphetamine have been increasing. Research is needed to determine if select subgroups in the US are at increased risk for use. METHODS: We examined data from individuals ages ≥12 from the 2015-2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (n = 226,632), an annual nationally representative cross-sectional survey of non-institutionalized individuals in the US. Log-linear trends in past-year methamphetamine use were examined, stratified by demo

Degradation of different pesticides in water by microplasma: the roles of individual radicals and degradation pathways.

Pesticides are emergent toxins often identified in aquatic environments. In the present study, microplasma was employed to reduce the pesticide content in water. The degradation efficacy, rate, and pathways of standard organophosphorus pesticides (namely, chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos oxone, and diazinone) and an organochlorine pesticide (namely, DDT solution) were evaluated using microplasma. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was performed to elucidate the degradation efficiency of pesticides as a function of plasma-produced substances that originally contributed to the main

Childhood maltreatment in individuals at risk of psychosis: Results from the Brazilian SSAPP cohort.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is a known risk factor for the development of mental disorders, such as psychotic symptoms. An extensive body of literature about childhood maltreatment and mental health has been developed in wealthy countries, but information about this connection is lacking in developing countries. AIMS: To explore a possible relationship between childhood maltreatment and ultra-high risk of psychosis in a non-help-seeking population in a low- and middle-income country. METHODS: A household survey was conducted in Sao Paulo, Brazil, involving over 2,500 individuals aged

Characteristics and Outcomes of Lung Cancer Screening Among Individuals With or Without Cancer History.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) can reduce mortality from lung cancer. Individuals with previous malignancy are at an increased risk of lung cancer but are often underrepresented in clinical trials. This study compares the outcomes of LDCT screening among individuals with and without cancer history. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study cohort included consecutive participants undergoing LDCT screening at a tertiary care cancer institution. Abnormal screening result was defined as having Lung-RADS 3 or 4 at baseline (T0). Participant information was prosp

Two novel FUT1 alleles that cause para-Bombay phenotype in a Chinese individual.

BACKGROUND: Bombay and para-Bombay phenotypes, which arise from gene mutations of α-1,2-fucosyltransferase FUT1, are very rare in Chinese population. A para-Bombay phenotype Chinese individual with two novel FUT1 mutations was reported here. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The peripheral blood and saliva samples of the proband and her family members were collected after informed consent. ABO and H blood group phenotyping was performed by haemagglutination methods. ABO genotype was determined by PCR-SSP kit. A, B, and H antigens in saliva were detected by a hemagglutination inhibition test. Fragment

Ultrasound speckle tracking of Achilles tendon in individuals with unilateral tendinopathy: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Differential displacement between tendon layers has been shown to occur within the healthy Achilles tendon, and changes of this mechanism have been proposed to result in shear forces, which potentially could lead to tendinopathy. The magnitude of displacement between the tendon layers in tendinopathy is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate Achilles tendon layer displacement in individuals suffering from unilateral tendinopathy compared with the asymptomatic contralateral side. METHODS: Ten participants (9 men and 1 woman 45 ± 10 years, BMI: 28 ± 5) with unilateral Ac

Placenta and perinatal brain injury: the gateway to individualized therapeutics and precision neonatal medicine.

Wu and colleagues analyzed the placental pathology from a subset of the neonates in the NEATO trial who had reports available and correlated the placental pathology findings with outcomes. This study highlights the importance of placental pathology, and its potential to bring precision medicine to critically-ill neonates. Placental pathology will likely aid stratification of neonates for clinical trials and accelerate progress for neurorepair.

Germline variants and phenotypic spectrum in a Canadian cohort of individuals with diffuse gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: CDH1 pathogenic variants (pvs) cause most cases of inherited diffuse gastric cancer (dgc), but have low detection rates and vary geographically. In the present study, we examined hereditary causes of dgc in patients in Ontario. METHODS: CDH1 testing through single-site or multi-gene panels was conducted for patients with dgc meeting the 2015 International Gastric Cancer Linkage Consortium (igclc) criteria, or with isolated dgc at less than 50 years of age, or with a strong family history of cancer identified at the Zane Cohen Centre (zcc). All CDH1-positive patients at zcc, regard

Expectancy and affective response to challenging balance practice conditions in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

Psychological states can influence motor performance and learning. In Parkinson's disease (PD), placebo effects or expectancies for pharmacological treatment benefits are not uncommon, but little is known about whether self-efficacy, beliefs about personal performance capabilities, may play a role in this population. To address this question, we investigated whether experimental manipulations designed to enhance self-efficacy would benefit motor performance and learning in PD. A motor learning paradigm was utilized to determine the short-term (i.e., practice) and longer-term (i.e., retention)

Exploring the utility of EDA and skin temperature as individual physiological correlates of motion sickness.

Motion sickness (MS) is known to be a potentially limiting factor for future self-driving vehicles - specifically in regards to occupant comfort and well-being. With this as a consideration comes the desire to accurately measure, track and even predict MS state in real-time. Previous research has considered physiological measurements to measure MS state, although, this is mainly measured after an MS exposure and not throughout exposure(s) to a MS task. A unique contribution of this paper is in the real-time tracking of subjective MS alongside real-time physiological measurements of Electroderm

Molecular and clinical studies in 107 Noonan syndrome affected individuals with PTPN11 mutations.

BACKGROUND: Noonan syndrome (NS), an autosomal dominant developmental genetic disorder, is caused by germline mutations in genes associated with the RAS / mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. In several studies PTPN11 is one of the genes with a significant number of pathogenic variants in NS-affected patients. Therefore, clinically diagnosed NS individuals are initially tested for pathogenic variants in PTPN11 gene to confirm the relationship before studying genotype-phenotype correlation. METHODS: Individuals (363) with clinically diagnosed NS from four hospitals in South India w
