Determinants of suicidal ideation and suicide attempt among former and currently homeless individuals.

PURPOSES: This study identified determinants associated with suicidal ideation, suicide attempt and no suicidal behavior in a 12-month period among 455 former or currently homeless individuals in Quebec (Canada). METHODS: Study recruitment took place in 27 organizations located in two major Quebec urban areas, where services for homelessness are offered. Independent variables including clinical, socio-demographic, and service use/outcome variables were measured with eight standardized instruments. Significant associations between these variables and suicidal ideation or attempt in bivariate a

[Individual teacher's health literacy and their safety in dealing with chronically ill pupils and emergencies].

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) is regarded as a key determinant in health promotion. The support of HL should begin as early as possible to prevent later health problems. In the school setting, teachers play an important role. Due to all-day school and inclusion efforts, teachers are increasingly faced with the health problems of pupils. At the same time, many teachers show their own significant health problems, often due to an enormous workload. OBJECTIVES: This study assesses the level of the individual teacher's HL and examines possible relationships between the individual HL of teachers

Consumer, health professional and employment specialist experiences of an individual placement and support programme.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) are under-represented in the workforce. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) programme is an evidence-based intervention that co-locates an Employment Specialist in a community mental health team to support individuals with a SMI with their goal of finding work. Previous research predominantly explored IPS programme outcomes rather than stakeholder experiences. AIM: To explore programme stakeholder perspectives and experiences during the early stages of IPS programme implementation. METHODS: Qualitative descriptive methodology ex

Variation in contraceptive prevalence rates in Tanzania: A multilevel analysis of individual and regional determinants.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to answer two key questions: (1) what are the individual and regional determinants of contraceptive use; and (2) what are the effect(s) of individual and regional variables on regional differences in contraceptive use? DATA AND METHOD: Multilevel logistic regression was applied on data from the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) 2010 that allowed us to investigate simultaneously the individual and the regional determinants of contraceptive use and its regional variation. RESULTS: There was significant variation in contraceptive use, both betwee

Individuals with Down syndrome hospitalized with COVID-19 have more severe disease.

PURPOSE: Rare genetic conditions like Down syndrome (DS) are historically understudied. Infection is a leading cause of mortality in DS, along with cardiac anomalies. Currently, it is unknown how the COVID-19 pandemic affects individuals with DS. Herein, we report an analysis of individuals with DS who were hospitalized with COVID-19 in New York, New York, USA. METHODS: In this retrospective, dual-center study of 7246 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, we analyzed all patients with DS admitted in the Mount Sinai Health System and Columbia University Irving Medical Center. We assessed hospit

The correlation between breath acetone and blood betahydroxybutyrate in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Ketone testing is an important element of the self-management of illness in type 1 diabetes. The aim of the present study was to see if a breath test for acetone could be used to predict quantitatively the levels of the ketone betahydroxybutyrate in the blood of those with type 1 diabetes, and thus be used as an alternative to capillary testing for ketones. Simultaneous capillary ketones and breath acetone were measured in 72 individuals with type 1 diabetes attending a diabetes clinic and on 9 individuals admitted to hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis. Capillary blood measurements ranged fro

Probing Single-Molecule Binding Event by the Dynamic Counting and Mapping of Individual Nanoparticles.

Measuring binding processes at the single-molecule level underpin significant functions in understanding biological events. Single-nanoparticle imaging techniques are providing a new concept for mapping the heterogeneous behaviors and characterizations of individual dynamics such as molecule-molecule interactions. Here, we develop the optical imaging techniques for directly counting and monitoring the binding and motion events of single nanoparticles linked to the substrate via the specific and reversible interactions between biomolecules. The one-step digital immunoassay realizes the biomolec

Atrophy of Basal Forebrain Initiates with Tau Pathology in Individuals at Risk for Alzheimer's Disease.

Evidence suggests that the basal forebrain (BF) cholinergic system degenerates early in the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD), likely due to the vulnerability of BF cholinergic neurons to tau pathology. However, it remains unclear whether the presence of tauopathy is the only requirement for initiating the BF degeneration in asymptomatic subjects at risk for AD (AR-AD), and how BF structural deficits evolve from normal aging to preclinical and prodromal AD. Here, we provide human in vivo magnetic resonance imaging evidence supporting that abnormal cerebrospinal fluid levels of phosphorylated

High prevalence of co-occurring substance use in individuals with opioid use disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Funding to address the current opioid epidemic has focused on treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD); however, rates of other substance use disorders (SUDs) remain high and non-opioid related overdoses account for nearly 30% of overdoses. This study assesses the prevalence of co-occurring substance use in West Virginia (WV) to inform treatment strategies. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of, and demographic and clinical characteristics (including age, gender, hepatitis C virus (HCV) status) associated with, co-occurring substance use among patients with OUD i

Comparison of uniaxial and triaxial accelerometer outputs among individuals with and without Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Using uniaxial accelerometry approach in measuring physical activity levels of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) might underestimate their energy expenditure due to the unique mediolateral walking pattern. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine and compare the relationship between two types of accelerometer outputs, uniaxial and triaxial, and energy expenditure in individuals with and without DS. METHODS: Eighteen participants with DS and 19 participants without DS wore a GT3X+ accelerometer and a portable metabolic system in three different walking conditions. RES

Virtual reality: physiological and behavioral mechanisms to increase individual pain tolerance limits.

Immersive virtual reality (VR) consists of immersion in artificial environments through the use of real-time render technologies and the latest generation devices. The users feel just as immersed as they would feel in an everyday life situation, and this sense of presence seems to have therapeutic potentials. However, the VR mechanisms remain only partially known. This study is novel in that, for the first time in VR research, appropriate controls for VR contexts, immersive characteristics (ie, control VR), and multifaceted objective and subjective outcomes were included in a within-subject st

Mental practice for treating upper extremity deficits in individuals with hemiparesis after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain (ischemic stroke) or the rupture of blood vessels within the brain (hemorrhagic stroke) and may lead to changes in perception, cognition, mood, speech, health-related quality of life, and function, such as difficulty walking and using the arm. Activity limitations (decreased function) of the upper extremity are a common finding for individuals living with stroke. Mental practice (MP) is a training method that uses cognitive rehearsal of activities to improve performance of those activities. OBJECTIVES: To determine wh

Individual Risk Prediction for Sight-Threatening Retinopathy of Prematurity Using Birth Characteristics.

IMPORTANCE: To prevent blindness, repeated infant eye examinations are performed to detect severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), yet only a small fraction of those screened need treatment. Early individual risk stratification would improve screening timing and efficiency and potentially reduce the risk of blindness. OBJECTIVES: To create and validate an easy-to-use prediction model using only birth characteristics and to describe a continuous hazard function for ROP treatment. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this retrospective cohort study, Swedish National Patient Registry data fro

Trends in characteristics of individuals who use methamphetamine in the United States, 2015-2018.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of self-reported methamphetamine use has remained relatively stable over the past decade; however, deaths and seizures involving methamphetamine have been increasing. Research is needed to determine if select subgroups in the US are at increased risk for use. METHODS: We examined data from individuals ages ≥12 from the 2015-2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (n = 226,632), an annual nationally representative cross-sectional survey of non-institutionalized individuals in the US. Log-linear trends in past-year methamphetamine use were examined, stratified by demo

Degradation of different pesticides in water by microplasma: the roles of individual radicals and degradation pathways.

Pesticides are emergent toxins often identified in aquatic environments. In the present study, microplasma was employed to reduce the pesticide content in water. The degradation efficacy, rate, and pathways of standard organophosphorus pesticides (namely, chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos oxone, and diazinone) and an organochlorine pesticide (namely, DDT solution) were evaluated using microplasma. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was performed to elucidate the degradation efficiency of pesticides as a function of plasma-produced substances that originally contributed to the main
