Carbon monoxide (CO) formation was studied in the process of lipid peroxidation in phenobarbital-induced rabbit liver microsomes. The reaction was NADPH-dependent and required Fe(2+), which occurs in microsomes as being protein bound and is not a consequence of heme destruction. Zn-protoporphyrin IX, an inhibitor of the heme oxygenase activity, proved to have no effect on CO production, suggesting that heme oxygenase is not involved into the CO generation reaction. This report documents two prehistoric cases of canine-first premolar transposition (Mx.C.P1) from the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. Recent discussion of the etiology of canine transposition and reports of high prevalence for the condition in modern India accentuate the significance of the ancient cases reported there. AIMS: To investigate if patients with pernicious anaemia (PA) are prone to develop iron deficiency and if there is a difference for this manifestation between younger and older age groups.
METHODS: Ninety-five patients with pernicious anaemia were evaluated for body iron status at the time of diagnosis and during follow up. Quantitative iron investigations were carried out in the leavings of liver biopsy specimens from 92 patients with liver siderosis, detected by histochemical methods. A discrimination between primary and secondary liver siderosis were tried by the liver iron index. Idiopathic hemochromatosis was not found in liver iron indices below 2, both hemochromatosis and secondary liver siderosis were found with an index above 2. Only idiopathic hemochromatosis was found with an index above 5 with the exception of one transfusional siderosis in refractory anemia.
