OBJECTIVE: To assess the short term morbidity of nonclosure of the peritoneum at caesarean section.
DESIGN: Women undergoing a lower segment caesarean section were randomly allocated to either closure or nonclosure of the visceral and parietal peritoneum.
SETTING: Tertiary Care University Hospital of Geneva.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Length of post-operative hospital stay. Other outcomes include maternal pain as assessed by both a visual analogue scale and the amount of post-operative analgesics administered, post-operative ileus, and febrile morbidity. Operative time was recorded.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred unselected consecutive patients referred for cholecystectomy, or admitted as emergencies with complicated gallbladder disease. BACKGROUND: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is common after trauma. Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a feared complication of DVT. Standard doses of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) are commonly used to prevent and treat DVT and PE. There is variable bioavailability of LMWH with standard therapy. The traditional concept that below-knee DVT is associated with a lower risk of subsequent PE may result in less aggressive therapy. PURPOSE: Patients with biliary atresia (BA) treated with Kasai portoenterostomy may later develop intractable cholangitis (IC) that is unresponsive to routine conservative treatment. It may cause biliary cirrhosis and eventually hepatic failure with portal hypertension. Control of IC requires prolonged hospitalization for the administration of intravenous antibiotics. To reduce the hospitalization period, we designed a home intravenous antibiotic treatment (HIVA) which can be administered after initial inpatient treatment.
