Human papillomavirus 6/11, 16 and 18 in oral carcinomas and benign oral lesions.

We have examined 118 oral squamous cell carcinomas, 72 oral leukoplakias, 12 cases of cheilitis and 65 of oral lichen planus for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) 6/11, 16 and 18 DNA by PCR/Southern blot hybridization. HPV DNA were found in 51/118 carcinomas (43.2%), in 16/72 (22.2%) leukoplakias, 3/12 (25.0%) cheilitic lesions and 10/65 (15.4%) lichen planus cases. These differences were even stronger when analyzing separately for the high-risk types HPV 16 and 18 as compared to low-risk types 6/11. HPV 16 and 18 DNA were present in 41/118 (34.7%) oral carcinomas, 12/72 (16.7%) leuko

Controversies in oral medicine.

This article reviews two conditions commonly seen in oral medical practice. Aphthous ulceration and lichen planus are two very perplexing problems with controversies about etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, management, and, in the case of lichen planus, malignant potential.

Pretibial pruritic papular dermatitis: A distinctive cutaneous manifestation in response to chronic rubbing.

We describe the clinico-pathologic features of 44 patients with a peculiar pretibial pruritic papular dermatitis (PPPD). Clinically, PPPD consists of discrete, roundish, extremely pruritic papules with a smooth surface caused by the delicate and persistent rubbing of pretibial skin. Histologically, PPPD showed minimal compact orthokeratosis, flattening of the rete ridges, a superficial and mid-dermal perivascular and interstitial infiltrate of lymphocytes, histiocytes, eosinophils and multinucleated fibroblasts, and thickened collagen bundles in haphazard array in the superficial dermis. [Common vulvar dermatologic conditions].

A wide range of cutaneous diseases can affect genital area. Some of these dermatoses are predominantly present in vulvar area while others primarily occur in extra-genital skin areas. Genital area is susceptible to maceration and the combination of moisture and warmth together with the increased penetration of topical agents make the region vulnerable for mechanical and chemical irritation. Lichen simplex chronicus (LSC) is a secondary condition precipitated by chronic itching and scratching. Scratching may be caused by some dermatoses or candida infection. Chronic systemic dermatoses most com

Case report: Lichenoid esophagitis revealing an HIV infection.

Esophageal lichen planus is an underrecognized manifestation of lichen planus. It is typically diagnosed based on characteristic endoscopic findings, such as hyperkeratosis, trachealization, denudation and/or stenosis, along with the presence of a lichenoid infiltrate in histopathological examination. In cases where no other manifestation of lichen planus are found and direct immunofluorescence for fibrinogen along the basement membrane is negative, the term "lichenoid esophagitis" should be preferred. This distinction is critical, as it prompts a thorough evaluation for underlying diseases, i

Investigation of the presence of Epstein-Barr virus in patients who had Oral Lichen Planus and Oral Lichenoid Contact Lesions with Real-time PCR method in serum, tissue, and saliva samples.

OBJECTIVE: Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is an immune system disease and its cause has not been fully determined yet. Oral Lichenoid Contact Lesions (OLCL) is an allergic condition known to develop because of dental materials. It is considered that some infectious agents (e.g., Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)) play roles in the etiology of OLP and OLCL. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the presence of EBV in different clinical samples of patients who had OLP and OLCL, to show its relationship with OLCL, and to determine its role in etiopathogenesis in these patients. METHODS: Twenty (2

A Unilateral, Pruritic Papular Eruption Following Primigravida Pregnancy.

Linear lichen planus (LLP), also known as blaschkolinear or blaschkoid lichen planus, is a rare subtype of lichen planus that presents along the lines of Blaschko. While LLP has been associated with vaccinations, neoplasms, medications, and successive pregnancies, we present a case of LLP following a primary pregnancy. A 29-year-old G1P1 female presented to dermatology for the evaluation of an intensely pruritic, whorled rash confined to her left lower leg that appeared shortly after the birth of her first child. A biopsy of the lesion and subsequent histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of L

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia Coexisting with Lupus Erythematosus: Poor Response to Hydroxychloroquine.

Lupus erythematosus, especially the discoid form, and lichen planopilaris may be associated and can occur in different topographies (coexistence) or in the same lesion (lupus eythematosus/lichen planus overlap syndrome). Frontal fibrosing alopecia is considered a variant form of lichen planopilaris and is characterized by frontotemporal hairline and eyebrow involvement. Of the association with lupus erythematosus we have only a few descriptions. Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine diphosphate are antimalarial drugs described as viable treatment options for both diseases, due to an antilymphocyt

[Postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia: 20 cases].

INTRODUCTION: Postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia is a scarring alopecia that has been recently described by Kossard in 1994 and rarely reported in the literature. OBSERVATIONS: We have conducted a retrospective clinical and histological study of a series of 20 cases of postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia. The results, in agreement with those in the literature, revealed the stereotyped nature of this entity. DISCUSSION: All the clinical and histological data suggest that postmenopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia is a clinical form of lichen planopilaris occurring in elderly women

A diagnostic study on folium and orchil dyes with non-invasive and micro-destructive methods.

Folium and orchil are dyes of vegetal origin. Folium is obtained from Chrozophora tinctoria (L.) A. Juss., whereas orchil is obtained from Roccella and other genera of lichens. These dyes were used in the past to impart purple hue to paintings and textiles as substitutes for the more prised Tyrian purple dye, obtained from shellfish. Despite several citations in ancient technical treatises dating back at least to the Greek-Roman age, the identification of these dyes in artworks is rare. In the case of folium, an additional drawback is that its composition is presently unknown. In this work dif

Atypical presentations of eosinophilic fasciitis.

Eosinophilic fasciitis is an uncommon connective tissue disease that may mimic and overlap with other sclerosing disorders such as morphea and lichen sclerosus. Herein, we report four patients (two men and two women, aged 16-64 yeas) with eosinophilic fasciitis. There was overlap with both morphea and lichen sclerosus in 2 patients and with morphoea alone in 1 patient. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used for diagnosis in three patients and for assessing treatment response in one patient. Eosinophilic fasciitis may co-exist with morhoea and lichen sclerosus. In view of the overlapping cli

Lichenoid eruption following hepatitis B vaccination: first North American case report.

Lichen planus is often found in association with a variety of underlying conditions. In particular, liver diseases such as primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, hepatitis C, and hepatitis B have been implicated in cutaneous lichen planus. Of interest, there is mounting evidence that lichen planus-like eruptions can occur following administration of the hepatitis B vaccine, which has recently become a routine immunization in many parts of the world. We present what we believe to be the first North American case of lichenoid drug eruption associated with the hepatitis B vacc
