Degree of osteophyte formation seen on radiographs provides useful prognostic information for dogs with cruciate ligament disease.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent osteoarthritis is generally present in the stifle joints of dogs with cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD), but it is not known if the degree of osteoarthritis-related changes affects the prognosis. Development of osteophytes is a key radiographic feature of osteoarthritis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the degree of osteophyte formation seen on radiographs and CCLD-related euthanasia in dogs with CCLD. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study including 226 dogs treated for CCLD at two university animal hospitals was performed. Clinical

Lateral Ulnar Collateral Ligament of the Elbow Joint: Reconsideration of Anatomy in Terms of Connection with Surrounding Fibrous Structures.

BACKGROUND: To improve the clinical results of lateral ulnar collateral ligament (LUCL) reconstruction of the elbow joint, better understanding of the anatomy of the aponeuroses and joint capsule could be relevant. This study considers the previously described anatomy of the LUCL in relation to the related aponeuroses and joint capsule rather than as a discrete ligament. We hypothesized that the deep aponeuroses of the superficial extensor muscles and supinator form a relevant portion of the joint capsule previously defined as the LUCL. METHODS: Twenty-four elbows (12 right) from 21 embalmed

Identifying the relationship between lumbar sacralization and adjacent ligamentous anatomy in patients with Bertolotti syndrome and healthy controls.

OBJECTIVE: Bertolotti syndrome is a diagnosis given to patients experiencing low-back pain due to a lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV) … 9 had right LSTVs, and 24 had bilateral LSTVs. For patients with unilateral defects, defective side ligaments were thinner than ligaments on the normal side (p < 0.05). For bilateral LSTVs, ligament thickness on each side was considered statistically equivalent (p < 0.05) and not significantly different from that in controls. CONCLUSIONS: Bertolotti syndro …

Detection of vector-borne pathogens in owned dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture living in the Mediterranean area.

BACKGROUND: Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) results from a multifactorial degenerative process that leads to rupture of the ligament. Vector-borne pathogens (VBP) in dogs can induce joint disease but their role in CCLR has not been previously investigated. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the prevalence of VBP in dogs with CCLR. METHODS: This was a prospective study that included 46 dogs presented for CCLR surgical treatment and 16 control dogs euthanized for diseases unrelated to the joints. Specimens collected included blood, synovial fluid, and synovial membrane biopsy.

Bowel Obstruction Caused by Broad Ligament Hernia Successfully Repaired by Laparoscopy in an Elderly Patient: A Case Report.

The most common causes of small bowel obstruction (SBO) are adhesions, Crohn's disease, neoplasms, and hernias. Internal hernias are rare, and they occur when the small bowel herniates through a defect in the abdominal cavity. The occurrence of internal hernias due to a broad ligament defect is very rare and accounts for 4%-7% of cases of internal hernia. We present a case of a 71-year-old female who was previously healthy with no significant past medical or surgical history and who presented with symptoms of small bowel obstruction. Imaging with X-ray and computed tomography (CT) confirmed th

Interference Screw Versus Suture Anchors for Femoral Fixation in Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction: A Biomechanical Study.

BACKGROUND: Femoral-sided graft fixation in medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is commonly performed using an interference screw (IS). However, the IS method is associated with several clinical disadvantages that may be ameliorated by the use of suture anchors (SAs) for femoral fixation. PURPOSE: To compare the load to failure and stiffness of SAs versus an IS for the femoral fixation of a semitendinosus autograft in MPFL reconstruction. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Based on a priori power analysis, a total of 6 matched pairs of cadaveric knees were

Gold Nanoparticles Promote the Bone Regeneration of Periodontal Ligament Stem Cell Sheets Through Activation of Autophagy.

OBJECTIVE: Cell sheet technology (CST) is advantageous for repairing alveolar bone defects in clinical situations, and osteogenic induction before implantation may result in enhanced bone regeneration. Herein, we observed the effect of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on osteogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cell (PDLSC) sheets and explored their potential mechanism of action. METHODS: PDLSCs were cultured in cell sheet induction medium to obtain cell sheets. PDLSC sheets were treated with or without AuNPs. Alkaline phosphatase, alizarin red S, von Kossa, and immunofluorescence st

Does Recurrence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) after Complete Division of the Transverse Ligament Really Exist?

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) after complete and sufficient division of the transverse ligament really exists. Another goal was to analyze the underlying reasons for recurrent CTS operated on in our department. Over an observation period of eleven years, 156 patients underwent surgical intervention due to CTS. The records of each patient were analyzed with respect to baseline data (age, gender, affected hand), as were clinical signs and symptoms pre- and postoperatively. To assess long-term results, standardized telephone interviews were p

Risk Factors for Contra-Lateral Secondary Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The risk of sustaining a contra-lateral anterior cruciate ligament (C-ACL) injury after primary unilateral ACL injury is high. C-ACL injury often contributes to a further decline in function and quality of life, including failure to return to sport. There is, however, very limited knowledge about which risk factors that contribute to C-ACL injury. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review instrinsic risk factors for sustaining a C-ACL injury. METHODS: A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Passing return-to-sport criteria and landing biomechanics in young athletes following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

We sought to evaluate the sagittal plane knee joint loading patterns during a double-leg landing task among young athletes who passed or failed return-to-sport (RTS) criteria following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction reconstruction (ACLR), and in uninjured athletes. Participants completed quadriceps strength testing, a hop test battery, and the International Knee Documentation Committee subjective form following medical RTS clearance. ACLR participants "passed" RTS criteria (RTS-PASS) if they met ≥90 limb symmetry (%) or score on all measures and were categorized as "failing" (RTS-FA

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Increases the Risk of Hamstring Strain Injury Across Football Codes in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the impacts of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and recent (< 12 months) hamstring strain injury (HSI) on (1) future HSI risk, and (2) eccentric knee flexor strength and between-limb imbalance during the Nordic hamstring exercise. A secondary goal was to examine whether eccentric knee flexor strength was a risk factor for future HSI in athletes with prior ACLR and/or HSI. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 531 male athletes had preseason eccentric knee flexor strength tests. Injury history was also collected. The main o

Neuromuscular and biomechanical landing alterations persist in athletes returning to sport after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed (ACLR) athletes show increased hamstrings activation and decreased knee flexion moments (KFMs) during single leg landing tasks at time of return-to-sport (RTS). Although these landing alterations seem protective in the short term, they might become undesirable if they persist after RTS. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to investigate whether those landing alterations persist in the months following RTS. METHODS: Sixteen athletes who had an ACLR performed five unilateral landing tasks at three different time points (at RTS, and at 3

An obstacle clearance test for evaluating sensorimotor control after anterior cruciate ligament injury: A kinematic analysis.

Sensorimotor deficits, particularly proprioceptive, are often reported following rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). High secondary injury rates and long-term negative consequences suggest that these deficits are not properly identified using current assessment methods. We explored a novel obstacle clearance test to evaluate sensorimotor control in individuals following ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and rehabilitation. Thirty-seven post-ACLR individuals, 23 nonathletic asymptomatic controls (CTRL), and 18 elite athletes stepped over a hurdle-shaped obstacle, downward vision occluded,

Comparison of deltoid ligament repair and non-repair in acute ankle fracture: A meta-analysis of comparative studies.

BACKGROUND: Rupture of the deltoid ligament (DL) in acute ankle fracture is very common. However, there is still insufficient evidence on whether to repair the DL in acute ankle fracture. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies was performed to report the outcome of DL repair in acute ankle fracture. METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were searched from the inception dates to October 31, 2020, for comparative studies. The methodological quality was evaluated based on the risk-of-bias tool of the Cochrane Collaboration for

Stronger Subjects Select a Movement Pattern That May Reduce Anterior Cruciate Ligament Loading During Cutting.

Davies, WT, Ryu, JH, Graham-Smith, P, Goodwin, JE, and Cleather, DJ. Stronger subjects select a movement pattern that may reduce anterior cruciate ligament loading during cutting. J Strength Cond Res 36(7): 1853-1859, 2022-Increased strength has been suggested to reduce the incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury as part of wider neuromuscular training programs; however, the mechanism of this is not clear. Cutting is a high-risk maneuver for ACL injury, but limited research exists as to how strength affects sagittal plane biomechanics during this movement. Sixteen subjects were sp

Mechanical properties and microstructural organization of common ulnar collateral ligament grafts: Palmaris longus and gracilis tendons.

Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries are becoming increasingly common. The palmaris longus (PL) and gracilis (GR) tendons are the most common grafts used in UCL reconstructions. While clinical studies have demonstrated relatively similar outcomes for either graft, there is little quantitative data describing these grafts from a material perspective, specifically the mechanical and microstructural properties of these tissues and how they respond under dynamic loading. The purpose of this descriptive laboratory study was to quantify and compare the mechanical and microstructural properties o
