Cardiovascular magnetic resonance as an initial screening tool in individuals with SLE and chest pain.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with SLE commonly report chest pain or discomfort. We performed cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) to differentiate coronary artery disease (CAD), coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD), pericarditis and myocarditis in individuals with SLE who presented with chest symptoms. We also assessed the clinical utility of CMR. METHODS: Adults with SLE were included if reporting chest pain or dyspnoea suggestive of cardiac involvement to a rheumatologist between 2018 and 2023. Individuals underwent CMR, including quantitative myocardial perfusion mapping at rest and durin

How to Identify and Monitor Axial and Peripheral Psoriatic Arthritis by Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is characterized by a spectrum of clinical manifestations. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a crucial tool in elucidating inflammatory and structural lesions associated with both peripheral and axial forms of the disease. The implementation of standardized definitions and scoring systems for active and structural MRI lesions facilitates a rigorous evaluation of axial and peripheral joint involvement and enthesitis in patients with PsA. Further, the emerging potential of whole-body MRI techniques shows promise in differentiating treatment effects. The annual MRI wor

Reliability of a Novel Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scoring System to Evaluate Patellofemoral Osteoarthritis.

Knee osteoarthritis is a common degenerative or posttraumatic condition associated with significant pain and disability among patients. Isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA) occurs in approximately 24% of women and approximately 11% of men aged >55 years presenting with knee pain. In contrast to the tibiofemoral compartments, the current literature lacks a reliable magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scoring system for quantitative evaluation of patellofemoral cartilage degeneration. This study aimed to describe, apply, and assess the interobserver reliability of a novel MRI scoring syste

Glenoid-version-measurement methods on magnetic resonance imaging: accuracy and reliability analysis.

Objective: Glenoid-version-measurement methods were initially defined for computed tomography (CT) but are now used for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, their accuracy and reliability on MRI have not been thoroughly investigated. The aim was to determine the accuracy of these methods on MRI and compare their reliability, hypothesizing that MRI could provide accurate measurements similar to CT using all 3 methods, with the Matsumura method having the highest reliability. Methods: Glenoid-version measurements of 40 patients (14 female, 26 males; mean age 46.5 ± 17.9 years) with glenohu

Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Based Anatomy of the Conus Medullaris: Variations of Location and Morphology.

BACKGROUND: In adults, the conus medullaris (CM) tip usually terminates at the mid aspect of the L1 vertebra. However, variations exist. Beside the location, differences in the CM's shape are believed to be closely related to neurological conditions. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study. We enrolled consecutive patients with nontraumatic complaints of lower back pain and/or sciatica. Two observers independently performed the measurements and determined the location and shape of the CM. The length of each vertebral body was divided into 3 equal lengths. The shape of the CM was d

A novel method for hyoid suspension using a magnetic device in beagles: A preliminary study.

Current methods for hyoid suspension in the treatment of upper airway (UA) collapse have some shortcomings. The application of a magnetic force to displace the hyoid bone has been reported to improve UA geometry in a human cadaver model. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a novel magnetic device for improving UA geometry and to verify its safety and feasibility in beagle canines. Ten healthy beagle canines were assigned to receive hyoid suspension using a newly designed magnetic device. An improvement in UA geometry was evaluated by laryngeal inspection and X-ray imaging before and after h

Nanohybrid urate oxidase with magnetically switchable catalytic potential for precise gout therapy.

Spatiotemporal regulation of therapeutic enzymes is desirable for enhancing the efficacy and safety of enzyme-based treatments for metabolic diseases, yet the absence of techniques capable of on-demand manipulating the in vivo catalytic activity of urate oxidase (UOx) represents a significant challenge in achieving precise gout therapy. Herein, we report a cyclic cascade nanohybrid urate oxidase (NUOx) comprised of a Fe3O4 nanoring core and a UOx shell, whose activity can be switched on and off on-demand using a deep-penetrated alternating magnetic field (AMF). The Fe3O4 nanoring under AMF exp

Preoperative Evaluation of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: The Relevance of Routine Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Introduction The evidence for using preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the whole spine in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is not well established. However, it is routine to perform whole-spine MRI in patients with scoliosis who are scheduled to undergo surgical correction in our center to detect occult neural axis abnormalities that may not present with neurological symptoms but could influence surgical planning and safety. Method A retrospective single-center and descriptive evaluation of the medical records of AIS patients aged 10 to 18 who were admit

Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Generated Synthetic Computed Tomography in Pediatric Spine Patients.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging are common imaging studies used to evaluate pediatric spine patients. Novel MRI-generated synthetic CT (sCT) images have demonstrated near equivalence in accuracy when compared with traditional CT (tCT) in cadaveric studies. This recent advancement allows potential visualization of both bony and soft tissue anatomy without harmful ionizing radiation. To date, no literature reports the use of sCT in the evaluation of pediatric spinal pathologies. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of sCT in managing pediatric and

Deep Learning-Based Differentiation of Vertebral Body Lesions on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Objectives: Spinal diseases are commonly encountered health problems with a wide spectrum. In addition to degenerative changes, other common spinal pathologies include metastases and compression fractures. Benign tumors like hemangiomas and infections such as spondylodiscitis are also frequently observed. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the gold standard in diagnostic imaging, the morphological similarities of lesions can pose significant challenges in differential diagnoses. In recent years, the use of artificial intelligence applications in medical imaging has become

Magnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles in the brain connected to alcohol-associated liver disease.

Magnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles in the form of magnetite (Fe3O4) are present in the human brain. They have been hypothesized to biomineralize in situ, as a result of dysfunctional iron homeostasis related to Alzheimer's disease, or to enter the brain as airborne pollution particles. Regardless of their origin, magnetic iron-oxides pose a potential hazard to human health due to their high redox activity and surface charge. Here we report measurements on four post-mortem human brainstems, with one brainstem showing approximately 100 times higher magnetite concentrations than the other cases. T

Magnetic-Driven Hydrogel Robots Loaded with Mitomycin for Active Therapy of Bladder Cancer.

Intravesical drug instillation is a common treatment for bladder cancer, but it suffers from poor targeting and suboptimal patient experience due to the influence of gravity. Here, we innovatively designed a bladder cancer treatment method using sodium alginate hydrogel magnetic robots as mitomycin drug carriers. The magnetic-driven hydrogel robots with mitomycin (MHRMs) are fabricated by uniformly mixing alginate solution, neodymium-iron-boron nanoparticles, and mitomycin, followed by the formation of MHRMs capable of carrying mitomycin in a calcium chloride solution. After being injected int

The Role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Preoperative Evaluation of Anterior Obliterative Urethral Strictures.

Background/Objectives: Conventional imaging modalities are often inadequate for evaluating the proximal extent of anterior obliterative urethral strictures. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), with its superior soft tissue resolution, provides detailed anatomical insights and significantly contributes to surgical planning in such cases. Methods: Four male patients aged 26-63 years with anterior obliterative urethral strictures were evaluated using MRI in addition to conventional imaging. All MRI scans were performed following a modified Joshi protocol. Clinical data, MRI findings, and surgical o

Thermal analysis of magnetic nanoparticles in laryngeal cancer hyperthermia using computational simulation.

Hyperthermia is a cancer treatment method that applies controlled heat to target and destroy cancer cells. Hyperthermia raises tumor temperatures to 42-46 °C, selectively damaging cancer cells while sparing healthy tissues. In this study, the potential of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles for hyperthermic treatment is explored through computational simulations. When exposed to an external alternating magnetic field, these nanoparticles generate localized heat, effectively elevating the temperature of the tumor region. Simulations were conducted during three distinct phases of breathing (inhalation,
