Wall motion index, estimated glomerular filtration rate and mortality risk in patients with heart failure or myocardial infarction: a pooled analysis of 18,010 patients.

AIMS: This study was designed to assess whether the prognostic significance of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) interact in populations with heart failure (HF) and myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: Patients were recruited from four screening registers (N=18,010) including patients admitted with HF or MI. Ten years follow-up was recorded and formal testing for interactions between eGFR and LVEF with respect to outcome was done. RESULTS: Twelve-thousand-and-ninety patients died. A significant interaction (P=0.010) was found and each p

Relative longitudinal motion of the finger flexors, subsynovial connective tissue, and median nerve before and after carpal tunnel release in a human cadaver model.

PURPOSE: The normal gliding environment in the carpal tunnel is complex. The median nerve and flexor tendons are surrounded by a multilayered subsynovial tissue. To date, observations of the relative motions of the flexor tendon, median nerve and multilayered subsynovial tissue have been through a surgically released open carpal tunnel. The purpose of this study was to compare the motions of these tissues in an intact and open carpal tunnel. METHODS: We measured the relative motion of the middle finger flexor digitorum superficialis tendon, its surrounding subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT)

Effectiveness of combined acupuncture therapy and conventional treatment on shoulder range of motion and motor power in stroke patients with hemiplegic shoulder subluxation: a pilot study.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of combined conventional rehabilitation therapy and acupuncture on the active shoulder range of motion (ROM) and motor power in stroke patients with hemiplegic shoulder subluxation. Twenty-one patients received a combination of acupuncture and rehabilitation treatment at a hospital, and their active shoulder ROM and motor power were assessed at admission and discharge. The therapy produced significant improvements in joint mobility, such as in flexion, extension, internal rotation, external rotation, abduction, and adduction (p < .001), and in

Persistence of range of motion in dorsiflexion, when the triceps surae muscles weaken, worsens stance and gait in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. A case report.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is a genetically heterogeneous disorder, characterized by length dependent degeneration of motor and sensory nerve fibers. The variability in clinical severity is typical, and is considered the result of environmental factors interacting with the genotype. We report the case of 2 sisters who present the same muscle involvement, with complete atrophy below the knees, but a very different degree of disability: the milder affected sister can walk independently for 1 km, the more severe for 50 m only. The factor, responsible for the different functional impairment, is t

Comparing continuous wave progressive saturation EPR and time domain saturation recovery EPR over the entire motional range of nitroxide spin labels.

The measurement of spin-lattice relaxation rates from spin labels, such as nitroxides, in the presence and absence of spin relaxants provides information that is useful for determining biomolecular properties such as nucleic acid dynamics and the interaction of proteins with membranes. We compare X-band continuous wave (CW) and pulsed or time domain (TD) EPR methods for obtaining spin-lattice relaxation rates of spin labels across the entire range of rotational motion to which relaxation rates are sensitive. Model nitroxides and spin-labeled biological species are used to illustrate the potent

The Bryan-Morrey triceps-sparing approach to open reduction of T-condylar humeral fractures in adolescents: cybex evaluation of triceps function and elbow motion.

Nine patients who underwent open reduction of a T-condylar distal humerus fracture through a Bryan-Morrey triceps-sparing approach were evaluated for triceps function and elbow motion. The average follow-up was 3 years 5 months. The average range of motion was -8 degrees to 136 degrees. Measured by Cybex testing, the average triceps deficit compared with the uninvolved arm was 6% at 60 degrees/sec, 7% at 120 degrees/sec, and 10% at 180 degrees/sec. Compared with another study that tested triceps function after open reduction with the Campbell triceps-splitting approach, no statistically signif

Comparison of the neurokinin-1 antagonist GR205171, alone and in combination with the 5-HT3 antagonist ondansetron, hyoscine and placebo in the prevention of motion-induced nausea in man.

AIMS: In man a neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist has previously been shown to be ineffective in the prevention of motion-induced nausea. The antiemetic efficacy of NK1 receptor antagonists against chemotherapy-induced emesis is, however, enhanced when combined with a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. Hence the efficacy of the NK1 antagonist GR205171 in combination with the 5-HT3 antagonist ondansetron (Zofrantrade mark) was assessed in motion-induced nausea. METHODS: GR205171 25 mg i.v., with and without concomitant administration of ondansetron 8 mg i.v., and hyoscine hydrobromide 0. 6 mg oral

Evaluation by quantitative 99m-technetium MIBI SPECT and echocardiography of myocardial perfusion and wall motion abnormalities in patients with dobutamine-induced ST-segment elevation.

ST-segment elevation during exercise testing has been attributed to myocardial ischemia and wall motion abnormalities (WMA). However, the functional significance of ST-segment elevation during dobutamine stress testing (DST) has not been evaluated in patients referred for diagnostic evaluation of myocardial ischemia. DST (up to 40 micrograms/kg/min) with simultaneous echocardiography and technetium-99m sestamibi single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was performed in 229 consecutive patients with suspected myocardial ischemia who were unable to perform an adequate exercise test; 12

Motion-induced fields near an idealized actively shielded MRI magnet: a reproducible reduced-order framework for scaling and sensitivity from 1.5 to 7 T.

PURPOSE: To present a transparent reduced-order electromagnetic framework for examining how an explicitly specified magnet geometry, movement trajectory, and body-conversion model affect movement-induced field estimates near MRI systems. The framework distinguishes dependencies imposed by the equations from spatial and sensitivity results computed from the field map. METHODS: An idealized actively shielded magnet was represented by primary and opposing coaxial solenoids. A 7-T reference system was calibrated at two axial points; 1.5 T and 3 T cases were then generated by matched-geometry ampe

The effectiveness of virtual reality/motion-sensing games incorporating swing-based elements on upper limb function after stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb impairment is a common consequence of stroke and can markedly limit independence in daily life. Virtual reality (VR) and motion-sensing games incorporating swing-based elements have increasingly been used in rehabilitation, but their effectiveness for post-stroke upper limb recovery remains unclear. This article aims to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of VR/motion-sensing games incorporating swing-based elements on upper limb function after stroke. METHOD: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and registere

Continuous-Wave Radar and Motion-Derived Biomarkers for Non-Contact Vital Status Classification in End-of-Life Care: A Clinically Validated Machine Learning Approach.

In palliative care, effective communication about anticipated death is critical for aligning therapeutic goals, managing family expectations, and ensuring dignified care. However, prognostic uncertainty - particularly regarding the time of death - remains a challenge due to the limited reliability of current methods. This study explores the potential of radar-derived motion biomarkers as a novel approach to distinguish between living and deceased patients, addressing the need for objective decision-support tools in palliative care. Using continuous-wave radar, we recorded the torso displacemen

Cross-education via contralateral-limb balance training improves gait speed and sagittal-plane knee motion after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether contralateral-limb balance training, grounded in cross-education theory, enhances gait speed and reconstructed-knee kinematics during early postoperative recovery from anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: A single-blind randomized controlled trial enrolled 40 patients 5-6 weeks post-ACLR, randomized 1:1 to an experimental group (n = 20; contralateral-limb balance training plus conventional rehabilitation) or a control group (n = 20; conventional rehabilitation alone), for 6 weeks (three sessions per week). Lower-limb kinematics duri

Case Report: Xsens motion analysis and virtual reality-based rehabilitation in a national-level badminton player following MPFL reinjury leading to postoperative patellar fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent patellar dislocation presents a significant rehabilitation challenge, particularly in athletes engaged in high-demand, multi-directional sports such as badminton. This case report describes a complex presentation in a state-level athlete with multiple patellar dislocations, followed by medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction and a subsequent comminuted patellar fracture. The case was further complicated by proprioceptive deficits, extension lag, sensory changes, and kinesiophobia, all of which limited the athlete's functional performance and return to sport

Motion-Preserving Salvage for Failed Total Ankle Arthroplasty or Talar AVN: Outcomes of Combined Total Ankle Arthroplasty with Custom 3D-Printed Total Talus Replacement.

BACKGROUND: Talar component collapse following total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) and talar avascular necrosis (AVN) with concurrent ankle arthritis represent challenging clinical scenarios. Traditional salvage with tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis sacrifices motion and has nonunion rates approaching 30%. This study evaluates outcomes of a motion-preserving salvage strategy: combined TAA with custom 3D-printed total talus replacement (TAA-TTR). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients who underwent TAA-TTR between September 2020 and December 2023. Indications included talar compone

Optimal Control-Based RF Pulses Versus Classical Motion-Encoding Strategies for In Vivo Hepatic MR Elastography Across Multiple Excitation Frequencies in Mice: Reproducibility Assessment.

This study compared an optimal control (OC)-based motion-encoding approach using radiofrequency (RF) pulses with the conventional motion-encoding gradient (MEG) method for in vivo hepatic magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) across multiple excitation frequencies in mice, evaluating signal quality and temporal reproducibility. Eight healthy C57BL/6 mice, including four males and four females, underwent hepatic MRE at 7T at 300, 500 and 600 Hz using RARE-based sequences: classical MEG-MRE and optimized OC-MRE with GRAPE-designed RF pulses. In both sequences, motion was encoded only along the s

Reduction of respiratory motion artifacts in free-breathing abdominal MRI using strategic averaging of reassembled k-space data with Self-Modeled respiratory state sorting.

OBJECTIVE: Motion during MRI acquisition leads to varying phase errors in k-space, resulting in motion artifacts that degrade image quality. This study aimed to develop a novel reconstruction method called Strategic Averaging of Reassembled k-space Data (STREAK), which utilizes self-modeled respiratory signals to reduce motion artifacts in free-breathing abdominal MRI. APPROACH: We compared the proposed STREAK method with conventional signal averaging (NSA) and free-breathing image acquisition. Three image groups were evaluated: free-breathing, NSA with three signal averages (NSA 3), and STRE
