Prevalence and clinical characteristics of impulse control disorder in Southern Brazilian Parkinson's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are potentially serious complications of Parkinson's disease (PD). Treatment, particularly the use of dopamine agonists (DAs), is associated with the development of ICDs and related behaviors. However, susceptibility to these disorders appears to be linked to specific risk factors. OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency, clinical presentation, and factors associated with the development of ICDs in a population of patients with PD. METHODS: Patients with PD were screened for ICD-related symptoms using the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorder

Speech-language performance and comorbid disorders in children with perisylvian syndrome induced by viral encephalitis.

IMPORTANCE: Viral encephalitis is one of the main causes of the perisylvian syndrome, which can cause damage to children's language-speech, feeding, and swallowing functions. Comprehensive assessment of language-speech and swallowing function and comorbidity research on these children will help children's rehabilitation workers to better understand the disease and strengthen the systematic management of comorbid disorders. OBJECTIVE: To describe speech and language pathology and the occurrence of comorbid disorders in children with perisylvian syndrome induced by viral encephalitis. METHODS:

Aromatic L-Amino Acid Decarboxylase Deficiency: A Genetic Screening in Sicilian Patients with Neurological Disorders.

Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase deficiency (AADCd) is a rare autosomal recessive neurometabolic disorder caused by AADC deficiency, an enzyme encoded by the DDC gene. Since the enzyme is involved in the biosynthesis of serotonin and dopamine, its deficiency determines the lack of these neurotransmitters, but also of norepinephrine and epinephrine. Onset is early and the key signs are hypotonia, movement disorders (oculogyric crises, dystonia and hypokinesia), developmental delay and autonomic dysfunction. Taiwan is the site of a potential founder variant (IVS6+4A>T) with a predicted incide…

The role of non-ordinary states of consciousness occasioned by mind-body practices in mental health illness.

BACKGROUND: Research with hallucinogens suggests that non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSCs), particularly mystical-type experiences, predict improvements in various affective disorders and substance use disorders (SUDs). Little is known, however, about the therapeutic potential of NOSCs induced by mind-body practices such as meditation, yoga and breathwork. METHODS: We conducted a literature review in online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar) and preprint databases (SSRN, bioRxiv) to identify studies of NOSCs induced by mind-body practices and their effects in affective disorde

Cognitive Impairment and Kidney Transplantation: Underestimated, Underrecognized but Clinically Relevant Problem.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects the crosstalk between organs in the body and vast majority of studies were devoted to the interactions between the kidneys and the cardiovascular system. As of today, there is more evidence of the kidney and the central nervous system connections. SUMMARY: Indeed, CKD and in particular dialysis therapy is linked to the increased prevalence of neurological complications, such as cerebrovascular disorders, movement disorders, cognitive impairment, and depression. Both traditional cardiovascular risk factors (such as diabetes, hypertension, and li…

Cerebellar tDCS as Therapy for Cerebellar Ataxias.

In recent years, a growing body of literature has investigated the use of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques to influence cerebellar activity and the effects of cerebellar stimulation on other brain regions through its multiple complex projections. From the early 1990s, with the discovery of the so-called cerebellar inhibition (CBI), several studies have focused their attention on the use of cerebellar NIBS as treatment for different motor disorders. Cerebellar ataxias (CAs) represent the prototypical clinical manifestation of cerebellar alterations, but other movement disorders,…

Neuropathology of FMR1-premutation carriers presenting with dementia and neuropsychiatric symptoms.

CGG repeat expansions within the premutation range (55-200) of the FMR1 gene can lead to Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome and Fragile X-associated neuropsychiatric disorders. These CGG repeats are translated into a toxic polyglycine-containing protein, FMRpolyG. Pathology of Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome and Fragile X-associated neuropsychiatric disorders comprises FMRpolyG- and p62-positive intranuclear inclusions. Diagnosing a FMR1-premutation carrier remains challenging, as the clinical features overlap with other neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we describe two ma

How Stapes Ankylosis and Fracture Affect Middle Ear Dynamics: A Numerical Study.

Numerical models of the human middle ear have been developed throughout the last 30 years, for different purposes. While several types of pathologies have been studied, stapedial disorders were seldomly explored. This papers aims to clarify how stapes fracture and some forms of stapes ankylosis, such as stapedial tendon (ST) ossification, augmented pyramidal eminence (PE) and bony bar presence, affect the sound transmission through the middle ear. In addition, the stapes dynamics is also analyzed by means of total displacement and first principal strain. For the purpose of the study, first, a

Tremor.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tremor may be defined as an involuntary movement that is rhythmic (ie, regularly recurrent) and oscillatory (ie, rotating around a central plane) and may manifest in a variety of ways; accordingly, tremor has a rich clinical phenomenology. Consequently, the diagnosis of tremor disorders can be challenging, and misdiagnoses are common. The goal of this article is to provide the reader with straightforward approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of tremors. RECENT FINDINGS: Focused ultrasound thalamotomy of the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus is an emerging and

Glutamatergic autoencephalitides: an emerging field.

Autoimmune responses targeting synaptic proteins are associated with a wide range of neurologic symptoms. Among these disorders are those associated with antibodies to ionotropic glutamate receptors, including the NMDAR (N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor) and AMPAR (α-amino-3-hydrozy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor). Patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis present with psychiatric symptoms, seizures, movement disorders, impaired consciousness, and autonomic derangements; half of patients have an associated ovarian teratoma, and most patients respond to immunosuppressive therapies. NIOSH research efforts to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in the healthcare industry.

Healthcare workers, including orthopaedic nurses, face a number of risk factors in the workplace for musculoskeletal disorders such as back and shoulder injuries. These disorders are associated with excessive back and shoulder loading due to manual patient handling, applying excessive forces during pushing and/or pulling of objects, required use of awkward postures during patient care, and working long hours and shiftwork. No healthcare workers are immune from injury because workers in all clinical areas are exposed to occupational risk factors, including hospitals, nursing homes, emergency se

The molecular biology of the autosomal-dominant cerebellar ataxias.

Autosomal-dominant cerebellar ataxias (ADCA) may present as progressive or paroxysmal disorders. While the progressive ataxias have been named spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA), the paroxysmal disorders are designated episodic ataxias (EA). Until now, three different mutational mechanisms resulting in distinctive pathogenesis have been identified. The first type of mutation present in SCA1, SCA2, SCA3, and SCA7 is an expanded CAG repeat in genes of unknown function that are translated into proteins with expanded polyglutamine tracts. A common ultrastructural feature of these disorders is the forma

Therapeutic potentials of plant iridoids in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases: A review.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the most common age-related neurodegenerative disorders, affecting several millions of aged people globally. Among these disorders, AD is more severe, affecting about 7% of individuals aged 65 and above. AD is primarily a dementia-related disorder from progressive cognitive deterioration and memory impairment, while PD is primarily a movement disorder illness having three major kinesia or movement disorder symptoms, bradykinesia (slowness of movements), hypokinesia (reduction of movement amplitude), and akinesia (absence of normal uncon

Successful treatment of tremor by endoscopic third ventriculostomy in an adolescent with obstructive hydrocephalus due to tectal glioma: case report.

Hydrocephalus presenting with movement disorder is very rare, especially in children. We present the case of a 16-year-old boy who presented with bilateral intention tremor and slowed speech as a result of obstructive hydrocephalus secondary to a tectal glioma. Treatment with endoscopic third ventriculostomy improved his symptoms. We review the literature regarding this unusual presentation of an otherwise common condition.

Behavioural and neurophysiologic features of state dissociation: A brief review of the literature and three descriptive case studies.

Wakefulness, rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep are not always mutually exclusive conditions, as commonly assumed. In some cases, the declaration of any state may be incomplete and states can fluctuate rapidly, resulting in peculiar behavioural syndromes such as narcolepsy, REM sleep behaviour disorder and status dissociatus. We briefly introduce this topic and discuss three suggestive clinical cases.
