Operative Treatment of Ankle Fractures: Predictive Factors Affecting Outcome.

Purpose Surgical management of ankle fractures has been extensively studied in literature but studies investigating validated clinical results are lacking and controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate functional and health-related quality of life (HRQL) outcomes after surgically treated ankle fractures and to detect some of their predictors. Methods Two hundred sixty-six skeletally mature patients who underwent surgery for an isolated ankle fracture from 2006 to 2017 were retrospectively identified from our hospital records and included in the study. All patients were evaluated

Rabies Surveillance Identifies Potential Risk Corridors and Enables Management Evaluation.

Intensive efforts are being made to eliminate the raccoon variant of rabies virus (RABV) from the eastern United States and Canada. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wildlife Services National Rabies Management Program has implemented enhanced rabies surveillance (ERS) to improve case detection across the extent of the raccoon oral rabies vaccination (ORV) management area. We evaluated ERS and public health surveillance data from 2006 to 2017 in three northeastern USA states using a dynamic occupancy modeling approach. Our objectives were to examine potential risk corridors fo

Update on the status of leptospirosis in New Zealand.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that poses public health and ecological threats worldwide. In New Zealand (NZ), incidence of the disease is relatively high compared to other developed countries. The aim of this review was to describe the epidemiological status, ecological risk of leptospirosis and prevention in NZ. Disease notification data for leptospirosis in humans in NZ from 2010 to 2015 were collected from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research database. These data were supported by a literature review of epidemiological studies in human and animal populations. During thi

Developmental disabilities and socioeconomic outcomes in young adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the associations between developmental disabilities and indicators of socioeconomic outcomes (i.e., educational attainment, employment status, occupation type, subjective perception of socioeconomic status [SES], income, and wage rate) among young U.S. adults aged 24-33 years. METHODS: We used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n=13,040), a nationally representative study of U.S. adolescents in grades 7-12 during the 1994-1995 school year. Young adult outcomes (i.e., educational attainment, employment status, income, occupation, and subjecti

Socioeconomic status, antioxidant micronutrients, and correlates of oxidative damage: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether socioeconomic status (SES) (education, occupation, income), is associated both cross sectionally and prospectively with circulating concentrations of a) two correlates of oxidative damage, F(2)-isoprostanes (F(2)-IsoPs) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT); and b) antioxidant nutrients (ascorbic acid and carotenoids). We also examine whether the proposed associations are mediated by smoking, alcohol consumption, and depression. Risk for chronic disease increases with decreasing SES. One pathway by which low SES might influence disease risk is by promoting oxidative

Long-term predictors of increased mortality risk in screened men with new hypertension; the Malmo preventive project.

OBJECTIVE: Regular blood pressure control has been advocated for early detection and treatment of patients with hypertension. We aimed to study whether long-term survival rate is related to socioeconomic circumstances and biological factors among middle-aged men with screened new hypertension. METHODS: Of the 22,444 men who attended a general health examination in Malmo, Sweden during 1974--1984, in total, 2033 had a systolic or diastolic blood pressure of at least 160 or 100 mmHg and were without treatment for hypertension. Mean age was 45.8 (SD: 5.3) years. All-cause mortality was studied i

Rehabilitation for Preterm Infants in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Mini-Review.

Preterm birth is a major global health challenge, affecting approximately 15 million infants each year, with more than 60% born in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Advances in neonatal care have improved survival; however, limited access to early rehabilitation services contributes to persistent neurodevelopmental, motor, and cognitive impairments among preterm children. There is evidence that rehabilitation interventions, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and early developmental support, can play an important role in promoting optimal develop

[When the one who heals dies. The physician at the end of life].

A physician's death represents a critical point of tension between the values of modern medicine and the ethical limits of care. This review article analyzes how physicians face their own end of life and the type of care they receive compared with the general population. A narrative review of literature published between 2014 and 2025 was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and SciELO databases with the MeSH and DeCS descriptors: "Terminal care", "Palliative care", "Attitude to death", "Health personnel", "Right to die". Findings show that although physicians express a preference for a dignified d

Non-negligible aldehydes in the environment: Emerging challenges and advanced removal strategies.

Aldehydes, a class of reactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are pervasive environmental pollutants emitted from diverse sources, including industrial activities, building materials, and natural processes. Among them, certain aldehydes with established toxicity profiles exhibit environmental persistence and broad distribution. Chronic exposure to these specific compounds at elevated concentrations, particularly in occupational settings or heavily contaminated environments, has been linked in epidemiological and toxicological research to an increased risk of adverse health outcomes. A One Health investigation of a Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic fever outbreak reveals high seropositivity in livestock in Lyantonde District, Uganda, 2024.

In January 2024, an outbreak of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) was confirmed in Buyanja village, Lyantonde District, Uganda. Initially suspected to be anthrax, laboratory tests at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) confirmed CCHF, prompting a One Health response. Five (5) human cases were confirmed through both Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction(RT-PCR) and IgM Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) testing, all of which were associated with direct contact with livestock, particularly goats. Among the twenty-six goats sampled, 88% (23/26) tested positive for CCH

High cost of silence: Needlestick injuries and the persistence of hepatitis B virus risk among healthcare trainees.

The study by Jaho et al published in the World Journal of Virology highlights a compelling paradox in occupational health: While a robust 86.6% of 134 Albanian health sciences students demonstrate seroprotection (antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen ≥ 10 IU/L), a staggering 64.5% report at least one needlestick injury during training. This high prevalence of exposure is compounded by a culture of silence, with one-third of incidents remaining unreported. This editorial analyzes why high seroprotection rates should not lead to institutional complacency. It argues that the specific vulnerabil…

Tackling Acrylate Allergy: The Sticky Truth.

Acrylates are synthetic thermoplastic resins used in numerous industries since their discovery in the mid-19th century. Known for their versatility in formulating various consumer, health care, and industrial products, acrylates also have come under scrutiny for their potential to cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Allergic contact dermatitis to acrylates previously was largely occupational in nature, but the expanded use of acrylates in products ranging from nail cosmetics to medical devices has increasingly brought this allergy to the general population. Herein, we discuss the chemistr
