Ten years' blindness of the right eye: A rare presentation of an orbital melanoma.

Benign and malignant orbital tumours develop from the orbit or invade it from the surrounding tissues. Ocular melanoma is a rare but potentially devastating malignancy arising from the melanocytes of the uveal tract, conjunctiva, or orbit. The poor overall survival depends mainly on its high metastatic rate. Signs and symptoms are variables mainly depending on the size of the tumour. Its treatment consists generally of surgery, radiotherapy or both. We report a case of a patient suffering from unilateral blindness for the last 10 years with a recent swelling of the orbit. The pathological anal

Internal Fixation of Redistributed Orbital Fat in Transconjunctival Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty.

SUMMARY: Fat redistribution combined with release of the tear trough ligament in transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty is widely performed to correct lower eyelid bags and tear trough deformities, but suturing the released fat in such a narrow, dissected space remains a challenge. The purpose of this study was to introduce a new surgical technique of internal fixation that advances and sutures the pedicled orbital fat firmly to the midcheek through premaxillary and prezygomatic spaces. Twenty-two patients (age range, 22 to 39 years) with predominant orbital fat prolapse and tear trough deform

Orbital floor fractures-a comparison between CT images and findings at surgery.

PURPOSE: The present study aims to investigate how well CT images correlate to surgical findings in orbital floor fractures and to the presence of diplopia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 27 consecutive patients already selected for surgery due to an orbital floor fracture underwent a routine CT scan (axial, coronal, sagittal). An ophthalmologist established any presence of diplopia. Extent of fracture/injury seen on CT was compared to that discovered during surgery. RESULTS: In the surgeons´ opinions CT-images were in concordance with surgical findings in 71% of the cases. Agreemen

A Rapidly Expanding Hemorrhagic BRAF-Mutant Orbital Atypical Glomus Tumor.

A healthy 32-year-old woman presented with the acute onset of left sided eye pain, upper eyelid fullness, and binocular diplopia during light weightlifting. Examination elevated intraocular pressure, proptosis, upper eyelid ptosis, and motility deficits. CT demonstrated a well-circumscribed, homogeneous-appearing extraconal mass in the superior left orbit. The patient underwent an urgent orbitotomy with the excision of a hemorrhagic mass. Histopathology showed a glomus tumor with atypical features and hemorrhagic infarction, best classified as having uncertain malignant potential. A B-Raf prot

Orbital Involvement in Acute Adult Leukemias: Case Series and Review of Literature.

Orbital involvement in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is well-described in children but is uncommon in adults. This series reports 2 adult patients with orbital leukemic involvement and summarizes the existing literature. A 37-year-old male with recently diagnosed AML underwent induction therapy and subsequently developed a tan-pink colored sub-conjunctival lesion in the left eye. Incisional biopsy confirmed AML. A 35-year-old male with history of ALL presented with left-sided orbital mass. Fine needle aspiration biopsy confirmed ALL. Literature review of a

A Novel Report of Suspected Prostate Adenocarcinoma to Orbital Roof Meningioma Metastasis.

: Tumor-to-meningioma metastasis (TTMM) is an uncommon phenomenon, in which a primary malignant tumor metastasizes to a recipient preexisting meningioma. Herein, the authors report a case of a 74-year-old man with a known history of metastatic prostate adenocarcinoma who with frontal headache and right orbital apex syndrome. Initial CT studies demonstrated a right orbital roof osseous lesion. Subsequent MRI was reported as characteristic of an intraosseous meningioma with intracranial and intraorbital extensions. A biopsy of the right orbital mass was obtained and returned a diagnosis of metas

Traumatic Orbital Roof Fracture With Superior Rectus Entrapment in a Pediatric Patient.

Pediatric patients often present with orbital fractures after facial trauma, most commonly fractures of the orbital floor. Evaluation of orbital fractures for entrapment of the extraocular muscles is crucial, as urgent surgical exploration and possible repair are needed in these cases. We report a 2-year-old male who presented after a fall with multiple left orbital wall fractures, including a roof fracture. On examination, the patient's OS appeared fixed in an upward gaze. Positive forced ductions revealed clinical concern for entrapment of the superior rectus. The patient was taken to the op

Success rates of lateral canthotomy and cantholysis for treatment of orbital compartment syndrome.

PURPOSE: Vision loss after facial trauma can occur from orbital compartment syndrome (OCS). Orbital compartment syndrome is commonly treated surgically with a lateral canthotomy and cantholysis (C&C). Our study investigates success rates of lateral C&C for the treatment of OCS amongst emergency medicine (EM) and ophthalmology providers. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed. Cases were identified and the electronic medical record of patients was interrogated for clinical and procedural information. Success of a lateral C&C was defined as a decrease in intraocular pressure (IOP)

Frontal Sinus Cholesteatoma Presenting with Intracranial and Orbital Complications: Diagnosis and Treatment.

Frontal sinus keratoma or cholesteatoma is a rare disease of paranasal sinuses and presents as a slow-growing mass that becomes symptomatic as it grows to the surrounding structures. Intracranial complications are not a common presentation and are potentially life-threatening. Frequently the final diagnosis is only made intraoperatively because several other frontal sinus tumors behave likewise. Definitive treatment requires complete removal of the keratoma, and a combined endoscopic and external frontal sinus approach is a good treatment option. In this report, we presented a 68-year-old fema

Volumetric Analysis of Spheno-Orbital Meningiomas: Prognostic Correlation and a Compartmentalized Approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Spheno-orbital meningiomas arise from the arachnoid villi cap cells at the sphenoid ridge and have the ability to spread through soft tissue extension and cranial bone invasion. Owing to their orbital hyperostosis and intraorbital soft tissue extension, they commonly present with ophthalmologic manifestations. This study aims to investigate the correlation between tumor volume with the presenting symptoms and postoperative outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed patients who underwent surgical resection of spheno-orbital meningiomas. Tumor volumes in di
