Extracellular vesicles in osteoarthritis: pathological mechanisms, regenerative therapies and clinical translation.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic degenerative joint disease that has severe impacts on quality of life and creates a substantial socioeconomic burden. Conventional therapeutic strategies primarily focused on alleviating symptoms such as pain and functional impairment, with limited efficacy and an inability to reverse the disease process. Over the past two decades, regenerative medicine has been developed rapidly. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have garnered widespread attention and there has been an upsurge of research interest in their immunomodulatory and regenerative potential in OA. H

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals in male reproductive health: exposure risks, reproductive toxicity and emerging perspectives.

Male reproductive health represents a growing global health challenge, and increasing evidence highlights the contribution of environmental exposures to declining male reproductive function. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are widespread environmental contaminants that interfere with endocrine regulation and have been associated with impaired semen quality, hormonal imbalance and testicular dysfunction. Here, we summarize current advances in understanding EDC-induced male reproductive toxicity, focusing on major chemical classes, including bisphenols, phthalates, pesticides, per- and polyfluoro

Neurovisceral Model of Social Anxiety Disorder: An Integrative Review.

Social anxiety involves persistent fear of negative evaluation that causes significant distress or avoidance in social situations and, when lasting at least six months with meaningful impairment across life domains, meets diagnostic criteria for social anxiety disorder (SAD). The origins and maintenance of SAD have been described by disparate models as dysregulation of central and peripheral networks involved in emotion regulation and threat appraisal. However, studies integrating central and peripheral levels of analysis remain scarce and lack integration, leaving our understanding of the neu

Moral and perceptual conflict processing are implemented by distinct brain activation and functional connectivity patterns.

While humans resemble other primates in terms of motor and perceptual abilities, our behavior is uniquely characterized by morality-the ability to choose our actions based on specific ethical values. The evolutionary origins and neurobiological basis of moral behavior are debated intensely, with opposing proposals about whether moral decisions rely on domain-general decision-making neural circuitry (neural common currency hypothesis) or on unique neural processes that were shaped by evolutionary pressures associated with life in groups (social brain hypothesis). Here we examine the potential o

Dietary soy protein supplementation during lactation ameliorates growth and stress-axis dysregulation in low birth weight rats.

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis highlights the pivotal role of early-life nutrition in shaping lifelong health and disease risk. Low birth weight (LBW) remains a major public health issue associated with increased susceptibility to metabolic and cardiovascular disease, underscoring the need for early nutritional interventions. We investigated whether dietary supplementation with soy protein isolate (SPI) during lactation could mitigate adverse developmental programming in a rat model of LBW induced by maternal calorie restriction. Dams received an SPI-supplem

Transoral videolaryngoscopic surgery for hypopharyngeal anaplastic metastasis from papillary thyroid carcinoma.

We report an extremely rare case of hypopharyngeal metastasis with anaplastic transformation (anaplastic thyroid carcinoma) originating from papillary thyroid carcinoma, demonstrating successful tumor control using minimally invasive transoral surgery combined with targeted therapy. A 78-year-old man with a history of papillary thyroid carcinoma treated with total thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine 10 years earlier presented with sore throat and difficulty swallowing. Fiberoptic examination revealed a 25-mm mass on the posterior hypopharyngeal wall causing airway compromise, necessitating an

The role of paternal obesity in fetal development, pregnancy complications, and childhood outcomes: a systematic review.

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease theory proposes that environmental influences during early life have long-term effects on health outcomes. Although maternal factors have been extensively studied, the impact of paternal obesity on fetal development and pregnancy outcomes has received limited attention. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of paternal obesity on fetal development and pregnancy complications within the DOHaD framework. English-language studies published between 2020 and 2025 were searched in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library

Accent-based discrimination in the Venezuelans resettled in Colombia.

Little is known about accent-based discrimination among countries that share the same language. The present study was designed to identify the sociodemographic characteristics related to the perception of accent-based discrimination among Venezuelan migrants in Colombia and how negative context of reception, pressure to acculturate, crisis migration, depressive symptoms, and anxiety are related to this kind of discrimination. The study employed a convergent parallel mixed methods design. With information from 999 Venezuelans (430 adolescents and 569 adults), we conducted a logistic regression

Sound is essential for observers to accurately assess unsuccessful conversations.

Perceiving success in group conversations is central to social life, yet little is known about the extent to which the conversation success perceived by conversational partners aligns with that perceived by third-party observers. This study explores how third-party observers perceive conversation success across three sensory conditions (auditory-visual (AV), visual-only (V), and auditory-only (A)) to identify cues of which sensory domain signal perception of success. In two online experiments, older adults (57.1 years (SD = 6.1), N = 160 per experiment) watched and/or heard audio of 2-minute e

From scribbling to painting: children's drawing as an evolutionary laboratory for multisensory and sensorimotor integration.

Adult painting emerges from a sophisticated multisensory integration between vision, touch, proprioception, and motor control, taking shape as a form of active Bayesian inference about the external environment. The evolutionary origins (and survival value) of such embodied coordination, however, remain poorly explored. Traditional literature views children's drawing as a passive output of perceptual-motor-cognitive development. This work proposes the opposite hypothesis: that drawing acts as an active form of natural training, serving as an evolutionary laboratory for sensorimotor calibration.

The Grid Learning Task: Examining the Effects of Overlap Type on New Learning Within Healthy Adult Participants.

In everyday life, people often need to remember the locations of objects, such as where a car was parked on a given day. A key question is whether a similar prior experience (e.g., parking in the same lot the previous day) facilitates or interferes with memory for a new event. The Grid Learning Task (GLT) was developed to address this question. In this task, participants study a set of objects arranged on a grid and are then asked to place them in their correct locations on an empty version of the grid. Two overlap conditions are of primary interest: the Location overlap condition and the Obje

Effects of Fiber Inclusion on Pervious Concrete: A Multiscale Experimental and Imaging Study.

As is known, pervious concrete is commonly used in low-traffic-load applications. Therefore, pervious concrete is exposed to flexural loads throughout its economic life. To improve the flexural behavior of pervious concretes, fibers are the most common solution used by researchers. Hence, fiber dosages of 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3% (by volume of concrete) are selected for this study. The influence of increased cement content is also discussed. Single-sized limestone aggregates without any mineral admixture were used to produce pervious concretes. The mechanical and hydraulic properties of the pervio

Combined effects of ammonium and pH on sea urchin embryogenesis: insights for sediment quality assessment.

Ammonium is a key component of coastal marine systems, originating from both natural and anthropogenic sources, with possible toxic effects on marine organisms depending on the concentration and pH. This study evaluates, for the first time, the combined effects of ammonium and seawater acidification on early development of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus under both laboratory conditions and exposure to environmental matrices derived by dredged sediments from harbor area. Embryos were incubated with increasing concentrations of ammonium in filtered seawater at pH 8.1 and 7.6, as well as in

Free to Be in Peritoneal Dialysis: Without Kt/V?

Since its introduction in 1985, Kt/V urea has played a pivotal role as a marker of "dialysis adequacy." Over the decades, multiple clinical practice guidelines have adopted and subsequently relaxed Kt/V targets, which were then transformed into quality metrics in various health care systems, including the United States. In this perspective, we explore the historical origins of Kt/V, focusing on its adaptation to peritoneal dialysis. We critically examine literature linking Kt/V to patient outcomes and explore the limitations of Kt/V-including reliance on urea removal alone as a surrogate for t

Inhibition of mitochondrial protein translation sensitizes tumor cells to death receptor 5 agonistic antibody.

While many antagonistic antibodies are in routine clinical use, only a single agonistic antibody has received regulatory approval to date. While antibodies that activate Death Receptor 5 (DR5) were thought to have utility in the treatment of cancer by enhancing extrinsic apoptosis signaling, to date all clinical studies with these DR5 agonists have failed to deliver significant clinical benefit. A notable example of this is the DR5 agonistic antibody conatumumab. Here, we provide two potential avenues to improve the activity of DR5 agonists. First, we show that a dimeric IgA version (dIgA2) of
