Childhood sexual abuse and adolescent substance use: a latent class analysis.

Children who have exposure to child sexual abuse (CSA) are at particular risk for developing substance abuse in adolescence, but the extent to which CSA may shape patterns of adolescent substance use remains uncertain. The aim of this paper is to characterize the variations in patterns of adolescent substance use and to examine the association between CSA and qualitatively distinct patterns of adolescent substance use. Latent class analyses identified homogenous groups of adolescents with similar patterns of substance use using a sample of 1019 adolescents (mean age: 15.9 years; range: 13-18)

Disordered weight control behaviors in early adolescent boys and girls of color: an under-recognized factor in the epidemic of childhood overweight.

OBJECTIVES: Ethnic disparities in childhood overweight are well-documented. In addition, disordered weight control behaviors (DWCB) have been linked to overweight and weight gain in multiple ways, but little is known about DWCB in youth of color, especially boys. We examined the distribution and determinants of ethnic and gender disparities in DWCB in early adolescents. METHODS: In fall 2005, 47 Massachusetts middle schools participating in the Healthy Choices overweight prevention study administered a self-report baseline survey assessing student sociodemographics, height, weight, and DWCB (

Long-term follow-up of renal function in patients after surgery for obstructive uropathy.

In this prospective study, selected biochemical markers of glomerular and tubular function, proteinuria, and ultrasound findings in 62 pediatric patients who underwent surgery for obstructive uropathy were examined. Patients were younger than 12 months, normocreatininemic at the time of surgery, and examined at a mean age of 6.3+/-0.9 years. Out of the markers tested, serum concentration of cystatin C was significantly higher in patients when compared with the control group (p<0.001), and serum creatinine concentration was within reference interval in all patients. With respect to tubular func

Personal strengths and traumatic experiences among institutionalized children given up at birth (Les Enfants de Duplessis--Duplessis' children): I: Early experiences.

We examined childhood and early adult strengths and adverse experiences of a group of orphans given up at or near birth and raised in Quebec institutions into early adulthood. A follow-up interview of 81 adults (41 women, 40 men) at a mean age of 59.2 years included retrospective assessments of childhood experiences. Most participants reported multiple early adverse experiences, including, in descending order, unfair rules and excessive punishment, physical abuse, emotional neglect, witnessing violence, verbal abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse, and serious illness. Adverse experiences were

Evaluation of the PSAMAO "Roulez Protégé" mass media campaign in Burkina Faso. Prévention du SIDA sur les Axes Migratoires de l'Afrique de l'Ouest.

This study assesses the impact of the Prevention du SIDA sur les Axes Migratoires de l'Afrique de l'Ouest Roulez Protege mass media campaign in Burkina Faso on truckers' likelihood of talking with colleagues about HIV/AIDS, using condoms with an occasional sexual partner, and intending to use a condom in the future. A total of 764 and 1,032 truckers were interviewed in 1997 and 2000 along the Ouagadougou-Niangoloko trucking route. Truckers' exposure to the program has been high and the main message promoted has been greatly understood among those exposed. Logistic regression analyses suggest t

Psychosocial outcome in growth hormone deficient patients diagnosed during childhood.

Social disabilities have been described in GHD patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the social outcome of a group of adult hypopituitary patients diagnosed and treated during childhood. Seventy patients were interviewed at a mean age of 25.6 years (range 18-50 yr). They answered a semistructured questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory test. Patients were compared for academic achievement, marital status and employment with the nearest age sibling. We found high levels of school repeaters, school was often not completed, and around 50% were overprotected by teachers and tease

Renal response to volume expansion: learning the experimental approach in the context of integrative physiology.

We describe a laboratory experience for upper-level science students that provides a hands-on approach to understanding the basics of experimental physiology. A pre-lab, interactive tutorial develops the rationale for this experiment by reviewing the renal and cardiovascular mechanisms involved in the response to extracellular fluid volume expansion. After a hypothesis is stated, an experiment is designed to determine the relative importance of dilution of plasma proteins to the overall renal excretory response following volume expansion with intravenous saline. In the lab, students collect da

Absence of disconnexion syndrome in callosal agenesis and early callosotomy: brain reorganization or lack of structural specificity during ontogeny?

Four acallosal subjects, one child, aged 5, and three adults, as well as five epileptic patients who underwent callosotomy between the ages of 6-21 years, were tested on a variety of intra- and intermanual tasks in a study aimed at elucidating the developmental aspects of callosal plasticity. The performance of the clinical sample was compared to that of 48 normal children, aged 5-12 years, an age span generally considered to coincide with the final stages of callosal maturation. As previously reported, interhemispheric integration improved with increasing age in the normal sample. The two pat

Exploratory Analysis of Dental Age Differences in Children with Type 1 Diabetes Using the Demirjian Method.

Background: Chronological age does not always accurately reflect biological maturation in children, particularly in the presence of systemic conditions. Dental age is widely used as a biological maturity indicator; however, the impact of Type 1 diabetes mellitus on dental development remains unclear and inconsistently reported. Objective: This paper aims to explore differences between dental age (DA) and chronological age (CA) in children with Type 1 diabetes compared to healthy controls, and to assess the association between glycemic control (HbA1c) and dental maturation. Language and Repetition Performance in Autism Spectrum Disorder Versus Developmental Language Disorder: Evidence From Turkish-Speaking Children.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent differences in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Language difficulties are common in autism and can affect multiple domains, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. This study examined the language and repetition skills of Turkish-speaking autistic children (diagnosed with ASD), children with developmental language disorder (DLD), and typically developing (TD) peers. Ninety children aged

Demographic Differences Among Adults and Emerging Adults With, Without, and in Recovery from Alcohol and Other Drug Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Nearly two thirds of adults who have experienced a substance use disorder (SUD) are in recovery. Differences in recovery from SUD remain understudied. We examined demographic characteristics related to SUD and recovery in a nationally representative sample. METHODS: Data were from the 2021 National Survey of Drug Use and Heath (unweighted N = 44,877). Binary logistic regressions compared demographic groups' odds of past-year SUD and lifetime recovery from SUD among adults and emerging adults (ages 18-25). RESULTS: Among all adults, 17.2% reported past-year SUD and 8.4% reported b

Testing the efficacy of WORK-ON: vocational rehabilitation for people with chronic inflammatory arthritis in Denmark-protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Among people with chronic inflammatory arthritis (IA), up to 40% lose their job in the first few years after diagnosis of this condition and are hence at high risk of being permanently excluded from the labour market. Therefore, we developed a new context-specific vocational rehabilitation (VR) for people with IA. This 6 month VR (WORK-ON) includes the following: (1) an initial assessment and goal setting by a coordinating occupational therapist, who supports cooperation and coordination between relevant partners and navigation across primary and secondary care, (2) four group se

Evaluation of Experiences With Ecological Momentary Assessment Among Women With Metastatic Breast Cancer: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) experience significant quality-of-life decrements, but there are few supportive care interventions specifically designed for this group that significantly improve quality of life. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and related ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) may be particularly beneficial for patients with MBC. However, no studies have previously examined the use of EMIs in the context of metastatic cancer. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to qualitatively assess experiences with EMA and preferences for intervention

Mouse models and translational research progress of hereditary vestibular dysfunction.

BackgroundHereditary vestibular dysfunctions (HVDs) are a group of diseases caused by genetic mutations, characterized by congenital or progressive vestibular dysfunction, often accompanied by hearing loss or other systemic damages. These diseases are divided into syndromic (e.g., Usher syndrome, CHARGE syndrome) and non-syndromic types, involving mutations in key genes such as MYO7A, COCH, SLC26A4, TMC1, etc. Although clinical phenotypes vary, the pathogenesis is complex, traditional diagnostic methods are limited, and effective treatments are lacking. Mouse models are important tools for stu

A qualitative examination of human papillomavirus vaccine access, beliefs, and behaviors among adult males aged 18-35: applying the Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework.

BACKGROUND: Males, who disproportionately account for 83% of oropharyngeal cancer cases, are underrepresented in health promotion research, including human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination studies. The initial exclusion of males in HPV vaccine research, policies, and interventions has negatively affected male vaccine uptake. Furthermore, stigma, a well-documented barrier to healthcare engagement, has been overlooked in HPV vaccination behaviors. This study aimed to provide a more contextualized understanding of HPV vaccine disparities among adult males by applying the Health Stigma and Discrim
