Emerging effects of temperature on human cognition, affect, and behaviour.

Human body core temperature is tightly regulated within approximately 37 °C. Global near surface temperature has increased by over 1.2 °C between 1850 and 2020. In light of the challenge this poses to human thermoregulation, the present perspective article sought to provide an overview on the effects of varying ambient and body temperature on cognitive, affective, and behavioural domains of functioning. To this end, an overview of observational and experimental studies in healthy individuals and individuals with mental disorders was provided. Within body core temperature at approximately 37 °C

Predicting new-onset post-stroke depression from real-world data using machine learning algorithm.

INTRODUCTION: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a serious mental disorder after ischemic stroke. Early detection is important for clinical practice. This research aims to develop machine learning models to predict new-onset PSD using real-world data. METHODS: We collected data for ischemic stroke patients from multiple medical institutions in Taiwan between 2001 and 2019. We developed models from 61,460 patients and used 15,366 independent patients to test the models' performance by evaluating their specificities and sensitivities. The predicted targets were whether PSD occurred at 30, 90, 180,

Selective dopamine D2 receptor deletion from Nkx6.2 expressing cells causes impaired cognitive, motivation and anxiety phenotypes in mice.

Abnormal dopamine neurotransmission is a common trait of some psychiatric diseases, like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Excessive dopaminergic tone in subcortical brain regions is associated with psychotic episodes, while reduced prefrontal dopaminergic activity is associated with impaired cognitive performance and reduced motivation, among other symptoms. Inhibitory interneurons expressing the calcium binding protein parvalbumin are particularly affected in both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as they set a fine-tuned physiological inhibitory/excitatory balance. Parvalbumin and somato

Effects of comorbidity on executive functions among children with ADHD, finding trends.

There is still no basic overview about the effect of various types of comorbidity in executive functions due to two main reasons: (1) the type and number of comorbidities in ADHD is significantly varied, (2) EFs are very diverse and have different neuropsychological properties. Our objective was to determine the effect of comorbid disorders (number and type) on the performance in a wide range (seven) of executive functions in a sample of children with ADHD. Fifty-five male children aged seven to nine years with ADHD were divided into six groups: G1 = ADHD only (ADHD-O), G1 = Oppositional defia

Cognitive flexibility and the risk of anorexia nervosa: An investigation using self-report and neurocognitive assessments.

Impaired cognitive flexibility has been suggested as a risk factor for the development of anorexia nervosa (AN). The current study aimed to 1) investigate cognitive flexibility in people at various levels of risk of AN; and 2) compare people with a history of AN to people at different levels of risk of AN in cognitive flexibility. The sample comprised of 262 community participants (79% female) and 36 participants with a lifetime diagnosis of AN (97.2% female) aged between 18 and 64 years old. Participants completed self-report (the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale short-form version, the Eating

Toxicological assessment of cadmium-containing quantum dots in developing zebrafish: Physiological performance and neurobehavioral responses.

The present research investigated the effects of exposure to sublethal concentrations of cadmium selenide/zinc sulfide (CdSecore/ZnSshell)-containing quantum dots (QDs; 0 - 100 µg/L QDs) on the neurophysiological performance of developing zebrafish (Danio rerio). The results suggested that exposure to CdSe QDs for 5 days increased the whole-body content of Cd without affecting the general physiological conditions of larvae. Interestingly, CdSe QD exposure reduced swimming distance but increased swimming velocity of larvae, suggesting that the exposure may lead to burst/episodic swimming. The f

Cardiac autonomic neuropathy in fibromyalgia: Revisited.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is associated with widespread autonomic dysfunction where sympathetic predominance explains associated complaints such as widespread pain, sleep disorders and anxiety. Recent studies indicate a possible neurovascular autonomic interaction in the pathogenesis of FM. OBJECTIVE: Our study paradigm included a modified Ewing's battery of autonomic function tests to find the cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in FM patients. The battery comprises some tests such as the Valsalva maneuver, which are effort-dependent, so we also aimed to identify a potential simplified te

Influence of gender and education on cocaine users in an outpatient cohort in Spain.

Gender significantly influences sociodemographic, medical, psychiatric and addiction variables in cocaine outpatients. Educational level may be a protective factor showing less severe addictive disorders, longer abstinence periods, and better cognitive performance. The aim was to estimate gender-based differences and the influence of educational level on the clinical variables associated with cocaine use disorder (CUD). A total of 300 cocaine-consuming patients undergoing treatments were recruited and assessed using the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Diseases according

Tunable Q wavelet transform based emotion classification in Parkinson's disease using Electroencephalography.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a severe incurable neurological disorder. It is mostly characterized by non-motor symptoms like fatigue, dementia, anxiety, speech and communication problems, depression, and so on. Electroencephalography (EEG) play a key role in the detection of the true emotional state of a person. Various studies have been proposed for the detection of emotional impairment in PD using filtering, Fourier transforms, wavelet transforms, and non-linear methods. However, these methods require a selection of basis and are confined in terms of accuracy. In this paper, tunable Q wavelet

Mindfulness-based stress reduction for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder: Rationale and protocol for a randomized controlled trial in older adults.

The symptom burden of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) is high among older individuals, and treatment options are limited. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has potential to improve neurocognitive performance, psychosocial wellbeing, and quality of life, but empirical studies in this growing vulnerable population are lacking. In this trial, participants (N = 180) age 55 and older who are living with HIV infection, are on combination antiretroviral therapy with suppressed viral loads, and yet continue to experience behavioral and cognitive symptoms of HAND, are randomized t

The role of sleep disturbances in depressive-like behavior with emphasis on α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase activity in rats.

Sleep disorders may induce anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors. Furthermore, sleep disorders can alter the function of α-KGDH (α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase), which is involved in the citric acid cycle. In this study, we evaluated the effect of two models of sleep deprivation (SD) including total SD (TSD) and partial SD (PSD), and two models of napping combined with each models of SD on rats' performance in Forced Swim Test (FST) and α-KGDH activity in both hemispheres of the amygdala. 64 male Wistar rats were used in this study. A modified water box was also used to induce SD. The results

Perinatal fluoxetine treatment promotes long-term behavioral changes in adult mice.

Serotonin exerts a significant role in the mammalian central nervous system embryogenesis and brain ontogeny. Therefore, we investigate the effect of perinatal fluoxetine (FLX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, administration on the behavioral expression of adult male Swiss mice. For this purpose, two groups (n = 6 each, and ~ 35 g) of pregnant female Swiss mice were mated. Their offspring were treated with FLX (10 mg/Kg, s.c.) from postnatal day (PND) 5 to 15. At PND 16, one male puppy of each litter was euthanized, and the hippocampus was dissected for RNA analysis. At 70 days of li
