This single-centre retrospective cohort study evaluated the incidence and outcome of mycoses in critical ill patients (n = 283) with sepsis due to peritonitis. Overall mortality was 41.3%, and the 28-day mortality was 29.3%. Fungal pathogens were found in 51.9%. The common first location was the respiratory tract (66.6%), followed by the abdominal site (19.7%). Candida colonisation was found in 64.6%, and invasive Candida infection in 34.0%. The in vitro and in vivo antipneumococcal activities of the main pneumococcal autolysin (LytA) and Cpl-1, a lysozyme encoded by phage Cp-1, were studied. Intraperitoneal therapy with LytA or high-dose Cpl-1 remarkably reduced peritoneal bacterial counts (>5 log(10) CFU/ml) compared with those for the controls. After intravenous injection, LytA was the most effective treatment.

Tuberculous peritonitis and tuberculous endometritis are extremely rare entities in the Western world. In this article, we discuss a rare case of a 40-year-old Nigerian female presenting with abdominal pain, distension and secondary amenorrhea, and show that a high clinical suspicion combined with minimally invasive procedures can help physicians make the diagnosis, avoid extensive surgery, and rapidly initiate appropriate therapy.

Laparoscopic surgical repair of perforated gastroduodenal ulcer is technically feasible. To study the effect of a pneumoperitoneum on the extent and severity of peritonitis this animal study was devised. In rats gastric ulceration was induced by instillation of ethanol (50%, 2 ml) and followed by gastrotomy to simulate perforation. A quantitative characteristics of destructive and reparative processes in the organs of immune system is given on the model of acute peritonitis running under different conditions. During the usual course of inflammation in the abdominal cavity in the first 24 hours a sharp increase of lymphocyte destruction is noted, while proliferative changes decrease. Two days later the cell destruction decreases but proliferative changes increase. While using levamisole the destructive phenomena are not highly marked but proliferative processes persist at a high level during all periods of the experiment.
