Burnout as a mediator between personal distress and compassion satisfaction among Thai mental health professionals.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether burnout mediates the association between personal distress and compassion satisfaction after adjustment for age and sex. METHODS: Mental health professionals who had direct contact with patients and >6 months of work experience were invited to complete an online survey using convenience sampling through social media groups across Thailand between 25 August 2023 and 25 October 2023. Personal distress was assessed using the Personal Distress subscale of the Thai version of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index. Burnout and compassion satisfaction were measured us

Hospitalization for pneumonia among individuals with and without HIV infection, 1995-2007: a Danish population-based, nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals with high CD4(+) cell counts may have increased susceptibility to other infections. We compared incidence rates of pneumonia among individuals with and without HIV infection and explored risk factors for pneumonia in the HIV-infected population. METHODS: This was an observational cohort study conducted during 1995-2007. Each member of a Danish population-based nationwide cohort of HIV-infected individuals was matched with up to 99 control individuals from the general population. Data on age, mortality, emigration, and hospita

Prenatal fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) exposure differentially impairs fetal skeletal and soft-tissue growth: a longitudinal study in rural Butajira, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth is a key indicator of prenatal health and adverse perinatal outcomes. Maternal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) has been associated with impaired fetal development, yet evidence from low- and middle-income countries, particularly in rural high-exposure settings, remains limited. Few studies assessed repeated personal PM₂.₅ exposure measurements with longitudinal fetal growth trajectories. This study examined the association between personal maternal PM₂.₅ exposure and fetal growth trajectories in rural Butajira, Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based longitud

Validation of the Erlangen Test of Activities of Daily Living in Persons with Mild Dementia or Mild Cognitive Impairment (ETAM).

BACKGROUND: There are currently no valid, fast, and easy-to-administer performance tests that are designed to assess the capacities to perform activities of daily living in persons with mild dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, such measures are urgently needed for determining individual support needs as well as the efficacy of interventions. The aim of the present study was therefore to validate the Erlangen Test of Activities of Daily Living in Persons with Mild Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment (ETAM), a performance test that is based on the International Classificati

Association between pathogenic beliefs and personality disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Personality disorders are significant entities in the field of psychiatry and serve as predisposing factors for Axis I clinical disorder. The Treatment of choice is psychotherapy, and one specific approach is Control Mastery Therapy, which emphasizes addressing Pathogenic beliefs (PB). This study aimed to investigate whether there is a relationship between PB and specific personality disorders and whether these beliefs align with the core features specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) for that personality disorder. Early childhood insomnia phenotypes and temperament: a theoretical review with clinical implications for precision assessment and treatment.

PURPOSE: This theoretical review examines the clinical heterogeneity of early childhood insomnia and proposes a phenotype-based framework that integrates temperament into assessment and treatment planning in infants and preschool children (approximately 0-5 years). We focus on three clinically relevant presentations: (1) motor restlessness with fragmented sleep, (2) prolonged early-morning awakenings, and (3) sleep-maintenance insomnia with repeated awakenings frequently amplified by somatic triggers such as allergic symptoms. METHODS: We conducted a targeted PubMed/MEDLINE search for English

Mechanisms of change in naturalistic mental health care settings: study protocol for a longitudinal multimethod study.

INTRODUCTION: Mental disorders are among the leading causes of the global burden of disease and are often associated with severe functional impairment and high societal costs. Psychotherapeutic, psychopharmacological and internet-based mental health interventions have proven to be helpful, but challenges remain, including only moderate response rates, high relapse rates and barriers to accessing mental healthcare. Much of the existing evidence stems from studies conducted in controlled, often standardised settings that only partially reflect real-world conditions, contributing to a 'scientist-

Developing a novel tool to assess the ability to self-administer medication in non-demented in-hospital patients: ABLYMED study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Older people often suffer from multimorbidity resulting in polypharmacy. The correct administration of medication is a crucial factor influencing treatment efficacy. However, tools for evaluating the ability to self-administer different dosage forms of medications are lacking. The objectives of the ABLYMED study are to 1) assess the ability to self-administer different dosage forms of medication in older non-demented in-hospital patients who report autonomous management of medication, 2) identify factors influencing the ability to self-administer medication, and 3) develop a standa

Food Assistance to Financially Insecure Children and Adolescents With Chronic Kidney Disease: Impact on Disease Progression.

OBJECTIVES: In North American children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), poverty correlates with faster disease progression. As an aspect of poverty, food insecurity is common among these children, yet its impact on CKD progression is underexplored. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of food assistance (FA) on CKD progression by comparing the cumulative incidence and the hazard of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) initiation in those who reported receiving FA to those who did not. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study included longitudinal data collected over 10 years of follow-up fr

Dynamic Interactions Between Daily Emotional Processing and Sleep Quality in Emerging Adults.

Poor sleep quality is related to difficulties in regulating emotions and to mental health issues in emerging adults. While prior research has confirmed this link, the role of daily fluctuations in sleep quality and emotions, which may require different regulation strategies, has rarely been examined in previous research. This study used Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) for seven consecutive days using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap), with four smartphone-based assessments per day administered in the morning after waking, at midday, at 4 p.m., and 1 h before bedtime, to examine h

Grocery Shopping and Eating Behaviors Differ Between Persons With and Without a Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) heightens the susceptibility to neurogenic obesity, which is driven by alterations in energy metabolism and suboptimal dietary habits after injury. Those with SCI may adjust their grocery shopping and eating behaviors, notably influencing overall health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To assess differences in grocery shopping and eating behaviors between persons with and without (controls) SCI. METHODS: In an online, cross-sectional study, adults with (n = 207) and without (n = 52) SCI completed a one-time survey that assessed grocery shopping behavior (shopping fr

Out-of-pocket costs for PrEP ancillary services among U.S. commercially insured persons, 2017-2022.

BACKGROUND: We assessed annual out-of-pocket (OOP) costs for HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP)-related services among commercially insured individuals in the U.S. before and after the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandated no cost-sharing in 2021. METHODS: Using data from a large commercial database, we identified persons aged ≥18 years who were prescribed PrEP from 2017-2022. Medical claims for PrEP-related services submitted within one week before each PrEP prescription were extracted using CPT codes. For each service, we calculated the annual proportion of persons incurring OOP costs and asso

Peripheral neuropathy, an independent risk factor for falls in the elderly, impairs stepping as a postural control mechanism: A case-cohort study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Peripheral neuropathies perturbate the sensorimotor system, causing difficulties in walking-related motor tasks and, eventually, falls. Falls result in functional dependency and reliance on healthcare, especially in older persons. We investigated if peripheral neuropathy is a genuine risk factor for falls in the elderly and if quantification of postural control via posturography is helpful in identifying subjects at risk of falls. METHODS: Seventeen older persons with a clinical polyneuropathic syndrome of the lower limbs and converging electrophysiology were compared with 14

Daily Associations Between Injunctive Drinking Norms and Alcohol Consumption.

OBJECTIVE: Perception of others' approval of alcohol use (i.e., injunctive drinking norms) is strongly predictive of alcohol use, particularly among young adults. Although between-person injunctive norms predict alcohol use, there is evidence of within-person fluctuations in the relationship between norms and drinking. The current study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to test within-person, day-level associations between injunctive norms and alcohol use and to test whether social context moderated this association. METHOD: Participants (n = 83, M age = 24.0 years, 50.9% female) com

Surface-Electromyography-Based Co-Contraction Index for Monitoring Upper Limb Improvements in Post-Stroke Rehabilitation: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Secondary Analysis.

Persons post-stroke experience excessive muscle co-contraction, and consequently the arm functions are compromised during the activities of daily living. Therefore, identifying instrumental outcome measures able to detect the motor strategy adopted after a stroke is a primary clinical goal. Accordingly, this study aims at verifying whether the surface electromyography (sEMG)-based co-contraction index (CCI) could be a new clinically feasible approach for assessing and monitoring patients' motor performance. Thirty-four persons post-stroke underwent clinical assessment and upper extremity kinem
