[Epidemiological methods used in studies in the prevalence of Tourette syndrome].

Tourette syndrome (TS) prevalence was studied since the early 80-ies. Its clinical course is characterised by co-occurrence of motor and vocal tics. Results of previous epidemiological studies were surprisingly divergent: the prevalence varied from 0.5 to 115 cases per 10,000 population. The disease previously recognised as extremely rare and severe is now considered as quite common, with often moderate course. Selected methods used in studies of TS prevalence and analysis of their possible impact on study results are presented. The studies were divided into 3 groups: studies of the hospitalis

Resolution of culture Clostridium bifermentans DPH-1 into two populations, a Clostridium sp. and tetrachloroethene-dechlorinating Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain JH1.

Clostridium bifermentans strain DPH-1 reportedly dechlorinates tetrachloroethene (PCE) to cis-1,2-dichloroethene. Cultivation-based approaches resolved the DPH-1 culture into two populations: a nondechlorinating Clostridium sp. and PCE-dechlorinating Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain JH1. Strain JH1 carries pceA, encoding a PCE reductive dehalogenase, and shares other characteristics with Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain Y51.

Septic arthritis caused by vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus.

Four methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates were consecutively isolated from synovial fluid and a knee wound of a patient with septic arthritis. Determination of the MIC of vancomycin and population analysis confirmed these isolates as vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA). Results of this study also revealed that cell wall thickness and reduced susceptibility to Triton X-100 were characteristic features of VISA.

Retrospective Analysis of Imaging Characteristics of Tectal Gliomas.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Tectal gliomas (TGs) are rare tumors that involve critical locations in the brainstem, including the superior and inferior colliculi and the Sylvian aqueduct. The rarity of these tumors and the lack of large clinical studies have hindered adequate understanding of this disease. We sought to determine the association between imaging characteristics of TG and progression-free survival (PFS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, impact of imaging characteristics (contrast enhancement, calcifications, cystic changes, presence of hydrocephalus) on surv

Variations of Power Priors in Time-to-Event Analysis With Piecewise Constant Hazards Through Baseline and Outcome Similarity Driven Bounded Weighting.

Patient recruitment in clinical trials, particularly in rare diseases or pediatric populations, remains a significant challenge. Leveraging external data to supplement trial information offers a promising solution, reducing placebo allocation, and enhancing recruitment feasibility while increasing the number of patients receiving active treatment, thus improving safety evaluations. However, the success of this method depends on the alignment of external data with target data from a population characteristics perspective and scientific translation perspective. Bayesian statistical methods, incl…

Associations of social jetlag with mental health, somatic symptoms, and work functioning in a nationwide Japanese survey: A population-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Social jetlag (SJL), reflecting misalignment between biological circadian rhythms and socially imposed sleep schedules, has been linked to adverse health outcomes. However, population-based studies examining mental health, somatic symptoms, and work functioning simultaneously are limited. This study aimed to investigate the associations of SJL with these outcomes in a nationwide Japanese general population. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 12,372 individuals participating in the 2025 Japan Society and New Tobacco Internet Survey; 48.6% of the participants were male.

Development of a Disease-Specific Virtual Malaria Population for Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic Modeling.

Malaria remains a major global health challenge, with an urgent need for new therapies to combat the evolving resistance to anti-malarial treatments. Physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling offers a promising approach to accurately predict PK, optimize dosing strategies, reduce development time and cost, and de-risk the development of novel anti-malarial compounds. In this study, we developed and validated a virtual malaria population, reflecting the pathophysiological changes associated with acute uncomplicated malaria infections. Key alterations included elevated plasma α1-acid

Long-COVID is associated with increased absenteeism from work.

Long-COVID, defined as COVID-19 symptoms persisting for more than 3 months, may lead to persistent health issues requiring extensive medical care. Despite its long-term health impact, the economic impact of long-COVID remains understudied. This study examined whether individuals with long-COVID had more missed workdays compared to those without long-COVID. Adults (≥18 years old) with full-time jobs were identified from the 2022 Full-Year Population Characteristics file of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). A weighted two-part model was used to identify factors associated with missed …

High diversity of Escherichia coli causing invasive disease in neonates in Malawi poses challenges for O-antigen based vaccine approach.

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli is an important cause of neonatal sepsis and the third most prevalent cause of neonatal infection in sub-Saharan Africa, often with negative outcomes. Development of maternally administered vaccines is under consideration, but to provide adequate protection, an understanding of serotypes causing invasive disease in this population is essential. We describe the genomic characteristics of a collection of neonatal E. coli isolates from a tertiary hospital in Blantyre, Malawi, with specific reference to potential protection by vaccines under development. METHODS: Neon
