Impact of a household environmental intervention delivered by lay health workers on asthma symptom control in urban, disadvantaged children with asthma.

OBJECTIVES: We examined whether a home-based educational and environmental intervention delivered by lay health educators would improve asthma symptom control in inner-city children with asthma. METHODS: Children 2 to 16 years of age with diagnosed asthma and at least 1 asthma-related hospitalization or 2 emergency visits in the prior year were randomly assigned into 2 groups (immediate and delayed intervention) in a crossover study. Each group participated in the active phase (intervention) and the inactive phase. Outcomes included asthma symptoms, albuterol use, emergency department visits,

[How I prevent...skin cancers: from information to the telly-belly syndrome].

During the past decades, the incidence of skin cancers has been on the rise in Wallonia as in other regions of similar latitude in the rest of the world. Awareness of the population to the dangers of sun exposure and to the benefit of early cancer diagnosis is of the upmost importance and undisputed. The impact of the information delivered by the media and of the actions initiated by physicians is heterogeneous. The positive and unquestionable aspect is hampered if the population at risk is not properly targeted. It is also reduced if the problem understanding creates a surge in telly-belly sy

Accessibility of selected hospitals and medical procedures by means of aerial and transit network-based measures.

OBJECTIVE: This report investigates the use of linear and travelled route (transit network-based) distances in estimating the accessibility of hospitals to patients, for some selected hospital admission diagnostics. METHODS: For patients admitted to 14 public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro City, during 1996, under the ICD-9 headings "Complications of Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Puerperium" and "Disorders of the Circulatory System", average distances between the patient's district of residence and hospital of admission were calculated (both as Euclidean and as network-based distances). Data wer

A quantitative survey of correctional mental health professionals on current healthcare and treatment practices for transgender incarcerated persons.

There is a need for updated survey literature collected from correctional mental health professionals working within prison settings. Up to date research can add to the literature addressing the best practices for mental health treatment of the transgender incarcerated population in order to provide health care professionals and correctional staff with more effective, efficient, and widely understood intervention practices to facilitate the well-being and safety of this population. Guided by three research aims, 50 mental health professionals from 21 states throughout the United States were su

Navigating a new era in cardiovascular disease epidemiology: big data, artificial intelligence and the imperative of disability inclusion.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of premature global mortality and one of the largest contributors to disability-adjusted life years lost. Over the past decade, the field has been transformed by the convergence of population biobanks, deep learning applied to imaging and electrocardiography, polygenic risk scores, wearable biosensors, and methodological advances in causal inference and target trial emulation. These innovations are reshaping precision public health for the general population. Yet the gains have not been equitably distributed. People with disability (PwD),

Preferences for Prostate Cancer Outcomes: A Comparison of the Patient Perspective, the General Population Perspective, and a Population at Risk for Prostate Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To collect disease-specific and generic preference values for three populations. METHODS: Prostate cancer-specific health states were developed with attributes that varied across five health domains: sexual function, urinary function, bowel function, pain, and fear of the future. Men with prostate cancer, men at risk for prostate cancer, and a sample of the general population assigned value to 18 disease-specific health states using standard gamble (SG) methodology. Study participants also completed the Health Utilities Index (HUI) to obtain generic, community-based preference valu

Health behaviors and health care utilization of southern lesbians.

PURPOSE: Lesbian women are more likely to experience negative physical and mental health outcomes compared with heterosexual women, although most research on this population has relied on small convenience samples. This study compared health behaviors and health care utilization among lesbian women living in the South to representative subsamples of women from the general population. METHODS: We conducted a Web-based survey of 1,141 self-identified lesbian women aged 19 and older living in the South. We compared descriptive results from our study to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pr

Public brain health: a framework for action to promote and safeguard brain health.

The promotion of brain health has generally been undertaken at the level of individuals, for instance, in the quest for precision treatments for persons with, or at high risk of, neurological disorders. But the growing global burden of neurological conditions and the increasing understanding of the brain's central role in all facets of human life have spurred interest in public health approaches to the brain that emphasise population-level strategies benefitting everyone as part of a "brain health for all" vision of society. This article defines the emerging concept of public brain health as i

Contraceptive Use Measured in a National Population-Based Approach: Cross-Sectional Study of Administrative Versus Survey Data.

BACKGROUND: Prescribed contraception is used worldwide by over 400 million women of reproductive age. Monitoring contraceptive use is a major public health issue that usually relies on population-based surveys. However, these surveys are conducted on average every 6 years and do not allow close follow-up of contraceptive use. Moreover, their sample size is often too limited for the study of specific population subgroups such as people with low income. Health administrative data could be an innovative and less costly source to study contraceptive use. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the potenti

Resources for oral health in Africa.

Oral health in Africa is often overlooked despite its substantial impact on overall health and well-being. Currently, Africa has a very high prevalence of dental diseases, including untreated dental caries in permanent teeth, severe periodontal disease and oral cancer. Dental human resources are also very low, with dentists ranging from 1.77 to 0.03 per 10,000 population across the continent. The number of technicians also varies across the continent from 0.17 to.0.1 per 10,000 population. Southern Africa has the highest median dental assistants and therapists per 10,000 population ratio (0.2)

School screening in remote aboriginal communities--results of an evaluation.

As part of ongoing quality assurance, the effectiveness of the school screening program in meeting the health needs of Aboriginal children in a rural district in the Northern Territory Top End was evaluated. The major health problems of Aboriginal children were analysed for their suitability for screening programs. A prospective cross-sectional study used routinely collected field data from the school screening program in 1993. To ascertain follow-up, children who had failed screening tests had their clinic notes reviewed. A total of 774 children from 11 remote communities were screened. The r
