Clinical and research evaluations of sexual dysfunctions.

Evaluations of the nature of an individual's sexual functioning are done with relative frequency in today's clinical healthcare environment, often prompted by sequelae of a medical disorder (e.g. diabetes, breast cancer), surgical procedure (e.g. bilateral oophorectomy), or prescribed medications (SSRI antidepressant, antihypertensive). In addition, an increasingly large number of evaluations of sexual functioning are done in association with clinical trials research in the rapidly emerging field of sexual medicine. Although clinical and research assessments of sexual functioning share many si

Modeling dimensions of choice in accepting the smallpox vaccine.

OBJECTIVE: To model the dimensionality of understanding refusal to be vaccinated against smallpox. METHOD: The Smallpox Vaccination Choice Questionnaire was administered to a convenience sample of students. Through a series of factor analyses, responses were subjected to a statistical evaluation of the underlying factor structure of potential influences on choice. RESULTS: The analyses suggest 5 dimensions: knowledge, perceptions of risk and worry, psychological distress, general beliefs about vaccines, and age. CONCLUSION: This model will be used to help identify targets of intervention to

Caring for children with autism in the school setting.

Children with autism present unique challenges related to communication, behavior, and social skills. Each child with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibits individual characteristics of the disorder. Early identification of autistic spectrum disorder has been shown to improve the child's benefit from educational interventions. There may be health issues related to autism including seizure disorders and dietary restrictions. Students with autism need special consideration when they come to the health office for screening, assessment of injuries, or administration of medication. Collabora

[Psychooncological aspects in the care of females in HNPCC families].

HNPCC families are characterized by a genetic predisposition for colorectal and other cancers. In Düsseldorf we pursue an interdisciplinary counselling approach (geneticists, psychologists and surgeons). Apart from the genetic counselling itself, special emphasis is placed on the benefits of surveillance and screening recommendations. In this pilot study we were interested in investigating if the counselled women had understood the increased risk of gynecological cancers and correspondingly underwent the intensified screening modalities. We selected the approach of a telefone interview and enc

Clinical predictors of mental disorders among medical outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are common among primary care patients and often not detected by primary care physicians. We report on clinical cues that may allow physicians to target patients for psychiatric screening. METHODS: Two hundred fifty consecutive adults presenting to a walk-in clinic completed previsit surveys assessing demographics, symptom characteristics, recent stress, functional status (Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-6), and mental disorders (Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders [PRIME-MD]). Patients with positive findings for a mental disorder on the PRIME-MD underwe

Schizophrenia and delusional disorder in older age: community prevalence, incidence, comorbidity, and outcome.

The opportunity to assess prevalence, incidence, and outcome of schizophrenia and delusional disorder was provided by an age- and sex-stratified random sample of 5,222 persons age 65 years and over. This sample was chosen from general practitioner lists, and interviewed by psychiatric nurses trained to use the Geriatric Mental State (GMS)-AGECAT computerized diagnostic system. GMS-AGECAT ensured the reliability of the selection of cases between the two waves of the study. A subsample was interviewed by a research psychiatrist. The sample was followed up 2 years later using the same method by i

"Strong Teeth": an early-phase study to assess the feasibility of an oral health intervention delivered by dental teams to parents of young children.

BACKGROUND: Tooth decay (caries) is a significant health burden in young children. There is strong evidence for the benefits of establishing appropriate home-based oral health behaviours in early childhood. Dental teams are well placed to provide this information and there is clear advice on what oral health information should be given to parents. However, research has shown that there is limited guidance, training and resources on how dental teams should deliver this advice. "Strong Teeth" is a complex oral health intervention, using evidence-based resources and training underpinned by behavi

I wanted to refuse when they wanted to put me on oxygen: perception of patients and caregivers toward oxygen therapy in Mbale regional referral hospital, Eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Oxygen refers to a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is essential for proper body functioning and survival. However, the effectiveness of oxygen therapy can be influenced by the perceptions of patients and caregivers. Understanding patients' and caregivers' perceptions of oxygen therapy directly impacts healthcare practices. Consequently, the information gained from such research can be used to develop interventions that can help promote oxygen therapy's benefits, leading to the acceptance and compliance with oxygen as treatment. This studied aimed to explore the perception o

The effect of physical exercise on social appearance anxiety among college students: the serial mediating role of social media addiction and self-objectification.

BACKGROUND: Social appearance anxiety (SAA) has become a prominent mental health issue among Chinese college students, and it is particularly exacerbated in the mobile Internet era, marked by the pervasive use of social media. As an active health-promoting behavior, physical exercise is widely recognized as being able to effectively alleviate individuals' mental health problems, yet its underlying psychological mechanisms remain inadequately explored. Therefore, this study is based on social comparison theory, this study aims to investigate the relationship between physical exercise and SAA am

Global prevalence of impostor phenomenon in medical students: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Impostor phenomenon (IP) is a psychological phenomenon in which successful individuals fail to internalize their achievements and fear being exposed as "incompetent." Medical students may be particularly vulnerable to IP because medical training combines repeated high-stakes assessment, competitive peer comparison, hierarchical clinical supervision, and rapid professional identity transition, potentially affecting psychological well-being and academic performance. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the global prevalence of IP in pre-licensure medical students and analyze differences by sex,

Implementing inclusive online psychological support after stroke: professional stakeholder views from a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Emotional difficulties post-stroke are common, particularly among people from minoritised ethnic communities or with aphasia, an acquired communication disorder. However, there is a shortage of supportive evidence-based interventions, and of clinical psychologists to deliver them at scale. Wellbeing After Stroke-2 (WAterS-2) is a novel, online, group psychotherapy intervention based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It was designed to support post-stroke psychological adjustment, delivered by a trained non-psychologist workforce to increase potential reach. To guide equitable i

From Personalization to Therapeutic Continuity: Framework for Memory in AI-Powered Mental Health Systems.

AI-powered mental health tools are increasingly deployed to support users across multiple sessions, yet the field lacks a principled framework for how memory in these systems should be structured and applied. In most current implementations, memory functions primarily as a personalization mechanism, optimizing for conversational continuity and user engagement without distinguishing between types of information that have fundamentally different clinical relevance. We propose a framework organizing memory in AI-powered mental health systems into 4 functionally distinct types. Episodic memory cap

Network analysis of parenting, stigma, and psychopathology in sexual and gender minority parents.

Sexual and gender minority parents face unique stressors related to both parenting and minority status, yet the complex interplay between stigma experiences, parenting behaviors, and psychological well-being remains understudied. This cross-sectional study used network analysis to examine associations among parenting practices, stigma, and mental health symptoms in a national sample of 672 sexual and gender minority parents in the United States. Participants completed online surveys assessing experiences of discrimination, internalized homophobia and transphobia, parenting behaviors (e.g., hos
