Parents in jail.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the number of children in the United States with parents incarcerated in jail and to describe the characteristics of these parents and their criminal histories. SETTING: Inmates of local jails accounting for 36.5% of the incarcerated population of the US in 1989. PARTICIPANTS: Personal interviews with 5675 inmates randomly selected from 393,553 inmates of 3312 local jails in 1989. RESULTS: 44,263 (36%) inmates had children younger than the age of 15. Fathers outnumbered mothers 10-fold; the majority were in their 20s or 30s, unmarried, and poorly educated. The vast m

Transmission of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis among immunocompromised persons in a correctional system--New York, 1991.

During 1990 and 1991, nosocomial transmission of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) was documented in four hospitals in New York and Florida. Subsequently, additional MDR-TB outbreaks have been investigated by CDC. This report summarizes preliminary results of an investigation of transmission of MDR-TB in a correctional facility in New York.

The self-reported effects of PCP on human aggression.

The elicitation of violent of psychotic behavior by phencyclidine (PCP) administration is well documented. There are indications, however, that behavioral responses to PCP may differ among PCP users as a function of background or personality characteristics. The present study examined 35 male jail inmates with histories of PCP use. Estimates of the nature and extent of drug use and self-reports of previous psychiatric hospitalizations were obtained in these subjects. The Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory was modified to reflect behaviors under the two simulated conditions of "No PCP" and "PCP" u

Strongyloidiasis in Canadian Far East war veterans.

A survey was done of Canadians who had been interned by the Japanese during World War II to assess the prevalence of latent infection with Strongyloides stercoralis in this group. Packages containing three mail-in kits and a questionnaire were sent to 992 men, 694 (70%) of whom responded. Larvae were found in the stool specimens of four of the respondents. Examination of stool specimens after formalin-ether concentration was the most successful method of detecting Strongyloides larvae. The Baermann concentration technique yielded negative results in all four men. Three of the four cases of str

Sexually transmitted diseases in females in a juvenile detention center.

Of 37 female adolescent prostitutes and 63 other females held in the King County, Washington, juvenile detention facility, 81 (81%) complained of vaginal discharge, and only eight (8%) had no genitourinary symptoms. The prevalence of genital infections among prostitutes and nonprostitutes was similar. Neisseria gonorrhoeae was found in 18 (18%) of 98 detainees tested, and Chlamydia trachomatis was found in 17 (20%) of 86 detainees tested; either organism was found in 27 (32%) of 85 tested for both organisms. Also, 38 (48%) of 80 tested had trichomoniasis. No detainees had syphilis. Sixty-seven

Pharmacological interventions for antisocial personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Antisocial personality disorder (AsPD) is associated with rule-breaking, criminality, substance use, unemployment, relationship difficulties, and premature death. Certain types of medication (drugs) may help people with AsPD. This review updates a previous Cochrane review, published in 2010. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and adverse effects of pharmacological interventions for adults with AsPD. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, 13 other databases and two trials registers up to 5 September 2019. We also checked reference lists and contacted study authors t

Bridging the gap: Post-release outcome evaluation of the first jail-based telemedicine buprenorphine program.

Release from incarceration poses significant risk for opioid-associated overdose. Treatment engagement with medications for opioid use disorder prior to community release is an effective overdose mitigation strategy. But this evidence-based intervention is infrequently implemented in rural jails, a gap that can be addressed with the use of telemedicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate a novel telemedicine buprenorphine (tele-buprenorphine) treatment program for incarcerated people diagnosed with moderate-to-severe opioid use disorder (OUD). We conducted a retrospective chart review of da

Perceived impacts of medications for opioid use disorder implementation on mental health services and substance use counseling in carceral settings: qualitative findings from 13 Massachusetts jails.

BACKGROUND: Although research on Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) in carceral settings has grown, it has largely focused on the implementation of medication delivery or on substance use outcomes in the community. However, the introduction of new programs or the expansion of treatment services in criminal legal settings can have both direct and indirect consequences on other treatment programs and correctional operations within jails. Mental health and substance use disorders frequently co-occur, and their psychosocial treatment components often overlap. We examined how the implementa

START NOW WebApp-promoting emotion regulation and resilience in residential youth care and correctional institutions: study protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults in residential care and correctional institutions face various challenges, leading to negative life outcomes. Implementation barriers within these institutions, such as limited financial and spatial resources, pose significant hurdles to providing necessary support. Web-based approaches address these challenges by offering cost-effective, accessible solutions. This study aims to assess the efficacy of a newly developed web-based version of the existing evidence-based START NOW skills training in fostering emotion regulation and resilience among institut

Mental health disorders and recidivism among incarcerated adult offenders in a correctional facility in South Africa: A cluster analysis.

The contribution of mental illness, substance use, and appetitive aggression to recidivism has significant policy and practice implications. Offenders with untreated mental illness have a higher recidivism rate and a greater number of criminogenic risk factors than those without mental illness. Previous research has demonstrated that the likelihood of appetitive aggression increases in violent contexts where individuals perpetrate aggressive acts. Using the Ecological Systems Theory, this study investigated the association between mental health disorders and recidivism among incarcerated adult

Association of a History of Incarceration and Solitary Confinement with Suicide-Related Outcomes in a General Population Sample from Two U.S. Cities.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether a history of incarceration was associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, and to determine if this association was further strengthened when combined with a history of solitary confinement. METHODS: We collected cross-sectional data from a general population sample in New York City and Baltimore in March 2017. Participants were categorized based on their history of incarceration and solitary confinement: (1) no incarceration, (2) incarceration-only, and (3) incarceration plus solitary confinement. We compared these three groups, u
