Equities and Inequities Inherent in Wastewater Surveillance Systems for Public Health: New York State, 2020-2024.

Objectives. To evaluate equity in wastewater-based infectious disease surveillance, including equity of inclusion, outbreak detection, and disease forecasting. Methods. We assessed New York State's wastewater surveillance network using census tract-level data to compare social vulnerability and environmental burden across included, sewered but excluded, and unsewered communities during the scale-up of the network (2020-2024) and under changing coverage scenarios. We modeled outbreak detection equity by estimating outbreak sizes required for 95% confidence in the detection of hypothetical patho

Primary care visit trends in a public safety net health system during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about access to care and telehealth trends in safety net settings during the Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: We analyzed electronic health record data from patients assigned to a large, publicly funded, urban safety net system for primary care. We compared primary care visit types- in-person, telehealth (combined telephone and video visits), telephone, and video - between English-speaking patients and patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) across three study periods: pre-pandemic (March 2019-February 2020), pandemic Year 1 (March 2020-February

Patient-centered care for patients requiring dialysis during disasters and public health emergencies: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Disasters and public health emergencies disrupt health systems, threaten continuity of care, and disproportionately affect medically vulnerable populations. Patients requiring dialysis are especially at risk because their survival depends on regular access to complex, resource-intensive treatment. While disaster nephrology literature increasingly addresses preparedness and resilience, it remains unclear how explicitly this literature addresses patient-centered care. OBJECTIVE: To map the literature on patient-centered care for patients requiring dialysis during disasters and publi

Public awareness and knowledge of blood donation eligibility and deferral criteria: Fostering a culture of donation and advancing equity.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, blood operators permanently defer individuals with a history of malaria to prevent transfusion-transmitted malaria. While protective, this policy raises equity concerns, particularly for individuals requiring frequent transfusions, including those living with sickle cell disease. This study examined public awareness of donor screening criteria, perceived barriers to donation, willingness to donate, and views on potential changes to malaria deferral policies. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A mixed-methods community based study was conducted using a national survey. The survey

Collaborative Versus Confrontational Governance: When Political Ideology Predicts Psychological Reactance and Public Health Compliance.

Research has consistently linked political ideology to vaccination intentions, adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), and psychological reactance. However, less is known about whether these associations are contingent upon governance style. Using the COVID-19 pandemic as a naturalistic context, the present study examined whether collaborative versus confrontational governance styles would shape the relationship between political ideology and public health compliance. Spanish (n = 336) and Norwegian (n = 308) participants completed an online survey between April and May 2021 asse

Evaluating the implementation of guideline-directed medical therapy in the treatment of chronic heart failure at public hospitals in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) prolongs survival in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, different countries implement GDMT differently, and many patients are still undertreated. Therefore, this study aimed to assess GDMT utilization in patients with chronic HFrEF at the adult cardiac clinics of three selected hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS: An explanatory sequential mixed-methods (quantitative cross-sectional followed by qualitative phenomenological) study design was used to assess GDMT usage in patients with HFrEF a

Salmonella species in foods of animal origin, their virulence potential and antibiotic susceptibility in India: implications for public health.

In this study, a total of 2818 food samples of animal origin collected from 18 states of India using a stratified random sampling method were processed for isolation of Salmonella spp. PCR serotyping was performed to identify non-typhoidal serovars. All confirmed Salmonella isolates were screened for antibacterial susceptibility and for their virulence potential using the Galleria mellonella larvae. Microbiological screening identified 58 Salmonella spp. isolates (2.06%). Variation in isolation rate was not evident in various types of samples that were screened, and the place of isolation. On

Economic evaluation of population-level dementia prevention strategies in China: informing policy and public health action.

INTRODUCTION: While it has been postulated that population-based strategies targeting modifiable dementia risk factors are cost effective in high-income settings, their health and economic impact in China remains unclear. METHODS: A Markov model evaluated five interventions: salt substitution, smoke-free legislation, increased tobacco tax, sugar-sweetened beverage tax, and alcohol tax. Outcomes included dementia cases, deaths averted, life years gained, and lifetime cost-savings, assessed from a societal perspective over an infinite time horizon. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were perform

A Revised Public Health Emergency Preparedness Logic Model Reflecting the European Experience in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In 2017, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control developed a public health emergency preparedness logic model for European Union, differentiating between capacities (resources and infrastructure) and response capabilities (actions during emergencies). Analysis of the COVID-19 experience suggests that the main features of this logic model, including the 5 high-level categories of capabilities, remain valid. Some changes are needed, however, in 3 areas. In the detection and assessment area, "laboratory analysis" was integrated with "testing" to better represent their combined role

Patient and clinician experiences of language barriers in Qatar's multilingual public mental health care: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Effective communication is central to mental health care, yet language barriers in multilingual settings can compromise assessment, treatment, and therapeutic relationships. Qatar's Mental Health Service (MHS) at Hamad Medical Corporation serves a largely Arab patient population, while many clinicians use English as their primary working language. This study aims to examine how language barriers affect care delivery and the experiences of patients and clinicians within MHS. METHOD: This qualitative study adopted facet methodology, generating data through semi-structured interviews wi

Public-private partnerships for UAV-assisted emergency medical services in aging communities: an evolutionary game approach.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the current "market failure" in the large-scale deployment of UAV-assisted automated external defibrillator (AED) delivery networks for aging communities, and to explore innovative "Public-Private Partnership" (PPP) business models to overcome the "cold-start" institutional deadlock. METHODS: This study introduces a three-party evolutionary game model comprising community representatives, medical institutions, and UAV operators. By integrating principles of "health economics," we simulated the interactive decision-making processes under bounded rationality. Multi-scenari

A 2025 Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey on Public Attitudes Toward the Legalization and Depenalization of Recreational Cannabis in Poland.

The legalization and depenalization of recreational cannabis is increasingly debated in Europe, including in Poland, where medical cannabis was legalized in 2017. Despite ongoing public discourse, up-to-date data on public attitudes toward recreational cannabis legalization remain limited. This study aimed to characterize public attitudes toward the legalization and depenalization of recreational cannabis in Poland. This retrospective, cross-sectional, computer-assisted web interviewing-based nationwide survey was conducted between July 11 and 13, 2025, using an online questionnaire completed

Re-imagining poppers regulation in Canada: Perspectives from pharmacists, pharmacy students and public health practitioners.

Alkyl nitrites, commonly known as poppers, remain widely used in Canada despite regulatory prohibitions that restrict their sale as prescription-only substances. This incongruence between policy and practice has contributed to unregulated supply chains, product contamination, and missed opportunities for harm reduction - particularly among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, who use poppers at higher rates. This commentary examines the implications of reclassifying poppers as Schedule II drugs, permitting pharmacist-mediated, non-prescription access, drawing on perspectives fro

Strengthening tobacco control policy: using plain packaging to reduce product appeal and enhance public awareness.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide. While smoking prevalence has recently declined in Hong Kong, progress has slowed. Plain packaging may reduce product appeal and enhance the impact of pictorial health warnings (PHWs), supporting reduced tobacco use. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from August to November 2023 among 1,256 adult smokers in Hong Kong. Participants were recruited at outdoor public smoking hotspots and shown branded and plain cigarette packs with 85% PHWs. Perceptions of pack attractiveness, noticeabili

Reforming public health law to adapt to the changing climate: a case study of mosquito-borne disease management.

Climate change is affecting human health in ways that exceed the scope of conventional public health law. As climate change drives new and evolving threats to human health, the public health legal framework should also evolve to address health risks that cut across socioecological systems. Shifts in precipitation and higher temperatures will change the range and scale of disease vectors and other health stressors, and the societal response to some impacts might cause unintended health problems. Current public health laws are ill-equipped to transcend jurisdictional and bureaucratic boundaries

Postpartum Insurance Rates Among Citizens Versus Noncitizens During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of Medicaid continuous coverage provision (CCP) during the COVID-19 public health emergency on postpartum insurance for low-income noncitizen immigrants compared to citizens, and to assess whether state use of the from-conception-to-the-end-of-pregnancy (FCEP) policy, which excluded many immigrants from postpartum coverage, modified this effect. STUDY SETTING AND DESIGN: This study used a quasi-experimental design (difference-in-differences, or DID) to compare the insurance coverage gains between low-income postpartum noncitizens and citizens, using 2019 as t

Facing the pandemic amidst mental health challenges: A longitudinal study of Black and Latino public housing residents.

BACKGROUND: As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded in the U.S., individuals with mental health disorders faced compounded challenges exacerbated by existing inequities, including racial and economic injustice. AIM: This study examined the association between having a history of a prior mental health condition and psychological distress related to COVID-19 among predominantly Black and Latino public housing residents, identifying both risk and protective factors. METHODS: We used longitudinal data comprising eight time points from participants (N = 392) in a sample of 146 households of public hous
