[Electrosmog as a health risk factor: sources of artificial electromagnetic fields, evaluation of health risk, prevention methods].

In recent years we have observed how electromagnetic (EM) radiation enters our daily life. The strength of man-made EM field is often far above the natural level and this finding has encouraged a large group of researchers to investigate its possible health effect. Non-ionizing radiation and extremely low-frequency electric and magnetic fields have been the subject of intensive theoretical and experimental works since Adey published his observations concerning non-linear and non-thermal biological effects. At the same time an epidemiological material appeared suggesting that EM field generates

[Influence of radiotherapy on lymphocyte subpopulations].

The authors investigated the effects of radiation therapy on the immune system by studying lymphocyte subsets and other parameters in 32 patients undergoing radiation therapy for solid cancer. With monoclonal antibody techniques, we studied both T- and B-lymphocytes; cell suspensions were analyzed by means of a Facs Spectrum III Ortho (Ortho-Diagnostic) unit. The first control was performed right after the beginning of radiotherapy, when the dose to the patients was 50 Gy or higher. The second control was performed at 40 Gy because all patients received this dose. 30% of the patients exhibited

Override of the radiation-induced mitotic block in human tumour cells by methylxanthines and its relationship to the potentiation of cytotoxicity.

The four methylated xanthine derivatives, caffeine, theophylline, theobromine and paraxanthine, were tested for their ability to override the mitotic block induced by ionizing radiation in the human bladder carcinoma cell line RT112. All four agents were found to partially override the block, ranking in terms of potency at a concentration of 1 mM in the order caffeine greater than theophylline greater than theobromine = paraxanthine. However, the effects of the four agents on the clonal survival of irradiated cells failed to correlate with the extent of override, both in terms of the relative

Assessment of Bioprotect's Biodegradable Balloon System as a Rectal Spacer in Radiotherapy: An Animal Study on Tissue Response and Biocompatibility.

Prostate cancer is a significant health concern for men, emphasizing the need for effective treatment strategies. Dose-escalated external beam radiotherapy shows promise in improving outcomes but presents challenges due to radiation effects on nearby structures, such as the rectum. Innovative techniques, including rectal spacers, have emerged to mitigate these effects. This study comprehensively assessed tissue responses following the implantation of the Bioprotect biodegradable fillable balloon as a rectal spacer in a rat model. Evaluation occurred at multiple time points (4, 26, and 52 weeks…

No increase in translocated chromosomal aberrations, an indicator of ionizing radiation exposure, in childhood thyroid cancer in Fukushima Prefecture.

To investigate the effects of radiation exposure due to the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, following the disaster Fukushima Prefecture launched thyroid ultrasound examinations of residents who were generally younger than 18 years at the time of the earthquake. As the rate of pediatric thyroid cancer was higher than expected, we conducted biological dose assessment based on the frequency of translocated chromosome (Tr) aberrations using peripheral blood lymphocytes. Tr formation frequency was compared among the thyroid cancer (n = 38, median age 18 years, age range 12-26 years), thyroi

Efferocytosis and enhanced FPR2 expression following apoptotic cell instillation attenuate radiation-induced lung inflammation and fibrosis.

Lung inflammation and fibrosis are common side effects of radiotherapy that can lead to serious reduction in the quality of life of patients. However, no effective treatment is available, and the mechanisms underlying its pathophysiology are poorly understood. Irradiation increases formyl peptide receptor 2 (FPR2) expression in lung tissue, and FPR2 agonists are known to promote the uptake of apoptosis cells, referred to as efferocytosis that is a hallmark of the resolution of inflammation. Herein, in a mouse model of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI), efferocytosis was induced by injecting

Impact of changes in body contours on radiation therapy dose distribution after uterine cervical cancer surgery.

PURPOSE: Patients receiving postoperative irradiation for uterine cervical cancer might not be able to eat during radiation therapy because of the effects of concurrent chemo-radiotherapy; this may lead to changes in the patient's body shape during treatment. When performing image-guided radiotherapy, it is necessary to determine immediately whether treatment can be performed on the day or whether re-planning is required. The purpose of this study was to determine indicators for re-planning by examining the effects of changing body contours on radiation therapy dose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Th

Ergosterol Peroxide Isolated from Oyster Medicinal Mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus (Agaricomycetes), Potentially Induces Radiosensitivity in Cervical Cancer.

Every year, more than 500,000 new cases of cervical cancer are reported, making it the fourth leading cause of cancer globally. Although human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines show promise as a protective measure, HPV-related cancers remain a public health problem since the vaccines, which are only specific to certain viral types, are unavailable for mass distribution. Furthermore, the effects of toxicity following ionizing radiation therapy have reoriented views toward the search for radiosensitizers that can reduce toxicity as a consequence of decreased radiation doses. Here, we isolated ergost

Radiation induces changes in toll-like receptors of the uterine cervix of the rat.

Radiotherapy is an important therapeutic approach against cervical cancer but associated with adverse effects including vaginal fibrosis and dyspareunia. We here assessed the immunological and oxidative responses to cervical irradiation in an animal model for radiation-induced cervicitis. Rats were sedated and either exposed to 20 Gy of ionising radiation given by a linear accelerator or only sedated (controls) and euthanized 1-14 days later. The expressions of toll-like receptors (TLRs) and coupled intracellular pathways in the cervix were assessed with immunohistofluorescence and western blo

Complete resolution of mycosis fungoides tumors with imiquimod 5% cream: a case series.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the clinical efficacy of topical 5% imiquimod for mycosis fungoides (MF) tumors. BACKGROUND: Treatment of tumor-stage MF represents a therapeutic challenge because of a limited number of effective topical therapies. Single tumors can be treated with localized radiation but may recur. Systemic therapies are also an option but are associated with serious adverse effects. Imiquimod is a topical agent whose efficacy has been documented in treating MF patches and plaques as well as one case of tumor-stage disease. METHODS: We present two stage IIB MF patients, including

The Nuclear Factor κB pathway: A link to the immune system in the radiation response.

Exposure to ionizing radiation modulates immune responses in a complex dose-dependent pattern, with possible anti-inflammatory effects in the low dose range, expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines at moderate doses and immunosuppression after exposure to higher doses due to precursor cell death together with concomitant exacerbated innate immune responses. A central regulator in the immune system is the transcription factor Nuclear Factor κB (NF-κB). NF-κB is involved in the regulation of cellular survival, immune responses and inflammation, resulting in eminent importance in cancerogenesis.

Caspase-3 activation and DNA damage in pig skin organ culture after solar irradiation.

In the present study, a convenient and easy-to-handle skin organ culture was developed from domestic pig ears using polycarbonate Transwell culture inserts in 12-well plate. This alternative model was then tested for its suitability in analyzing the short-term effects of a single solar radiation dose (from 55 to 275 kJ.m(-2)). Differentiation of the pig skin was maintained for up to 48 h in culture, and its morphology was similar to that of fresh human skin. Solar irradiation induced a significant release of the cytosolic enzymes lactate dehydrogenase and extracellular signal-related kinase 2
