BACKGROUND: In Denmark, the incidence of melanoma has been increasing since the 1960s. Intermittent exposure to ultraviolet radiation and a history of sunburn and sunbed use are known risk factors. We describe the association between use of protective measures, sun-related behaviour and experience of sunburn in the Danish population three months after the start of the campaign.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in radiotherapeutic techniques, radiation-induced cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain a leading but often underrecognized cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer survivors. Here in, the authors present a case of intracranial carcinoma with osteoradionecrosis and exposure of frontal bone with a large communication between nasal cavity and anterior fossa associated. The patient was successfully treated with resection of the tumor and reconstruction omentum free flap wrapped around autologous bone graft.

Photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) is a form of allergic contact dermatitis that occurs due to the interaction between a topically applied chemical and exposure to UV radiation. It can be difficult to identify and requires photopatch testing (PPT) for definitive diagnosis. In this article, we provide an overview of PACD, including clinical features, the most common photoallergens, and why cases may go undiagnosed.

Researchers have attempted to link incidences of papillary thyroid cancer with radioiodine releases from nuclear power plants. Thyroid cancer detection rates are examined together with overall population exposure to ionizing radiation and actual radioiodine releases from the Indian Point Energy Center to determine if a causal relationship exists. A critical review of the statistical analyses used in previous papers is then presented.

Many--topically applied or systemically administered--substances may trigger photoallergic skin reactions following exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. While most cases represent photoallergic contact dermatitis due to topically applied agents, systemically triggered photoallergy is considerably less common. The photopatch test--a UV-exposed variant of the conventional patch test--is the mainstay in the diagnosis of photoallergic or phototoxic reactions.

Solar radiation is a well documented risk factor in melanoma and non melanocytic skin cancer (i.e. basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma). It has been suspected to play a role also for lip cancer and for eye melanoma. Primary prevention should include advises to the public about sensible sun exposure. Results of such efforts will be apparent only in a long term perspective.

I describe concentrations of reflected solar radiation (albedo) found at the usual sites of various conditions associated with exposure to the sun--pterygium, pinguecula, climatic droplet keratopathy and cataract and eyelid malignancy. Since the degree of limbal albedo concentration appears to be related to corneal curvature, patients at risk can be identified by a simple test and preventative measures taken.

A survey of North American dental schools revealed that processing quality control and routine maintenance checks on x-ray generators are, in most instances, being carried out in a timely manner. Available methods for reducing patient exposure to ionizing radiation are, however, not being fully implemented. Two factors emerged from a search for obstetric phenomena that might explain concordance of leukemia in both members of a twin pair within days or months of each other: antenatal exposure to ionizing radiation; and antenatal cojoined intrauterine circulation. In addition, antenatal tumor metastasis and chromosomal changes, antenatal or postnatal, may be contributory. Continued observation of reports should be carried out.
