In this study, we executed single-cell RNA sequencing of intestinal crypts. We analyzed the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at different time points (the first, third, and fifth days) after 13 Gy and 15 Gy abdominal body radiation (ABR) exposure and then executed gene ontology (GO) enrichment analysis, RNA velocity analysis, cell communication analysis, and ligand‒receptor interaction analysis to explore the vital events in damage repair and the multiple effects of the Wnt3/β-catenin pathway on irradiated mice. Results from bioinformatics analysis were confirmed by a series of biological

Radiation-induced brain injury (RII) is a harmful side-effect occurring after conventional radiation therapy (usually fractionated whole-brain irradiation/fWBI) of patients with cerebral tumors and metastases. An important role in the quality of patients' lives plays cognitive, executive, and emotional functions, regulation on which are involved in frontal cortices pathways. This study assessed the morphologic and metabolic alterations in the rodent frontal cortex caused by fWBI with the total dose of 32 Gy in 4 fractions performed by linear accelerator Clinac iX. Nine male Wistar rats underwe

OBJECTIVE: Conventional localization technique of V point for full-endoscopic posterior cervical foraminotomy and discectomy (FPCD) required repeated fluoroscopies, especially in patients with short and thick necks. To address this issue, the present study aimed to introduce a new localization technique of V point, and further evaluate its efficacy.
METHODS: A K-wire was inserted and fixed at the pedicle eye under A/P fluoroscopy, then a working channel was established quickly along with it. Thirty-four patients who underwent minimally invasive FPCD assisted by the new technique were included

OBJECTIVE: Perhaps the most vexing and exigent problem confronting head and neck cancer reconstruction is overcoming the impediments of collateral damage imposed by radiation therapy (XRT) on normal surrounding tissue. Radiation therapy is detrimental to bone and soft tissue repair resulting in an unacceptably high incidence of devastating wound healing complications as well as the associated morbidity of late pathologic fractures, reduced bone healing, and osteoradionecrosis. The consequences of XRT on bone vasculature, long known to be affected by radiation, have been poorly understood. The

The submandibular glands of male rats were exposed to 50 Gy X-irradiation as a single dose, with or without pre-treatment with either alpha-adrenergic agonists (noradrenaline, phenylephrine) or a cholinergic antagonist (atropine). The effects were analyzed by morphometric, cytochemical and biophysical methods. When X-irradiated without drug pre-treatment, many serous epithelial cells of the intralobular convoluted ducts displayed morphologic evidence of irreversible radiation damage, in contrast to neighbouring mucous and other cells which were unaffected. The effect was maximal 96 h after irr

BACKGROUND: Polytrauma patients with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥ 16 have a high mortality rate. Early identification of patients at risk of mortality is key. Different risk stratification models are available; however, body composition on third lumbar computed tomography (L3 CT) is not routinely used. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of CT body composition on 1-year mortality in adult polytrauma patients.
METHODS: Body composition analysis (L3 CT) was performed on 593 adult polytrauma patients. The associations with 1-year mortality were assessed using uni- and multivaria

Local nerve inflammation (neuritis) leads to ongoing activity and axonal mechanical sensitivity (AMS) along intact nociceptor axons and disrupts axonal transport. This phenomenon forms the most feasible cause of radiating pain, such as sciatica. We have previously shown that axonal transport disruption without inflammation or degeneration also leads to AMS but does not cause ongoing activity at the time point when AMS occurs, despite causing cutaneous hypersensitivity. However, there have been no systematic studies of ongoing activity during neuritis or noninflammatory axonal transport disrupt

BACKGROUND: Rectourethral fistulas are an uncommon, yet devastating occurrence after treatment for prostate cancer or trauma, and their surgical management has historically been nonstandardized. Anecdotally, irradiated rectourethral fistulas portend a worse prognosis.
OBJECTIVE: To review outcomes after surgical treatment of rectourethral fistulas in radiated and nonirradiated patients to construct a logical surgical algorithm.
DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospective review was undertaken of all patients presenting to Duke University with the diagnosis of rectourethral fistula from 1996 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: HIV is a neurotropic virus, and it can bring about neurodegeneration and may even result in cognitive impairments. The precise mechanism of HIV-associated white matter (WM) injury is unknown. The effects of multiple clinical contributors on WM impairments and the relationship between the WM alterations and cognitive performance merit further investigation.
METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was performed in 20 antiretroviral-naïve HIV-positive asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment (ANI) adults and 20 healthy volunteers. Whole-brain analysis of DTI metrics between groups was

OBJECTIVES: Skull fractures can be difficult to recognize on radiographs and axial computed tomography (CT) bone windows. Missed findings may delay abuse diagnosis. The role of three-dimensional (3-D) reconstructions in child abuse evaluations was retrospectively evaluated.
METHODS: Twelve exemplary cases between August 2006 and July 2009 are described. All, except 2 medical-legal cases, were clinical abuse consultations. With the use of a 1-to-3 scale, ease and accuracy of interpretation of findings between plain films, bone windows, and 3-D CT images were independently assessed by 2 radiolo

INTRODUCTION: Computed tomography angiography (CTA) is used to screen patients for cerebrovascular injury after blunt trauma, but risk factors are not clearly defined in children. This modality has inherent radiation exposure. We set out to better delineate the risk factors associated with blunt cervical vascular injury (BCVI) in children with attention to the predictive value of seatbelt sign of the neck.
METHODS: We collected demographic, clinical and radiographic data from the electronic medical record and a trauma registry for patients less than age 18 years who underwent CTA of the neck

After traumatic spinal cord injury, functional deficits increase as axons die back from the center of the lesion and the glial scar forms. Axonal dieback occurs in two phases: an initial axon intrinsic stage that occurs over the first several hours and a secondary phase which takes place over the first few weeks after injury. Here, we examine the secondary phase, which is marked by infiltration of macrophages. Using powerful time-lapse multi-photon imaging, we captured images of interactions between Cx3cr1(+/GFP) macrophages and microglia and Thy-1(YFP) axons in a mouse dorsal column crush spi

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries demand individualized treatments based on an accurate estimation of the child's skeletal age. Wrist radiographs, which have traditionally been used to determine skeletal age, have a number of limitations, including cost, radiation exposure, and inconvenience.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the reliability and validity of a radiographic staging system using tibial apophyseal landmarks as hypothetical proxies for skeletal age to use in the preoperative management of pediatric ACL tears.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 2.

BACKGROUND: Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) has recently gained popularity as a minimally invasive surgical option for the treatment of mesiotemporal epilepsy (mTLE). Similar to traditional open procedures for epilepsy, the most frequent neurological complications of LITT are visual deficits; however, a critical analysis of these injuries is lacking.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the visual deficits that occur after LITT for mTLE and their etiology.
METHOD: We surveyed five academic epilepsy centers that regularly perform LITT for cases of self-reported postoperative visual deficits. For

BACKGROUND: Computerized Tomography (CT) scan is gaining more importance in the initial evaluation of patients with multiple trauma, but its effect on the outcome is still unclear. Until now, no prospective randomized trial has been performed to define the role of routine chest CT in patients with blunt trauma.
OBJECTIVES: In view of the considerable radiation exposure and the high costs of CT scan, the aim of this study was to assess the effects of performing the routine chest CT on the outcome as well as complications in patients with blunt trauma.

BACKGROUND: Posterior hip dislocation in children and adolescents may involve the non-ossified posterior acetabular wall. Plain radiographs and computed tomography (CT) have been shown to underestimate injury to the unossified acetabulum as well as associated soft-tissue structures.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe findings on radiographs, CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after posterior hip dislocation in a series of adolescents and to report the intraoperative findings, which are considered the gold standard. Measurements of the posterior wall length using MRI and

INTRODUCTION: While computed tomography (CT) is invaluable for detecting life-threatening injuries in the emergency department (ED), the literature shows increasing use of head CT and cervical spine CT in low-risk trauma patients without a corresponding rise in injuries identified. These low-yield exams expose patients to avoidable radiation, increase costs, and contribute to inefficiencies in already overburdened EDs. In this study we evaluated the impact of a multimodal quality improvement (QI) campaign to reduce the use of head and cervical spine CT in low-risk trauma patients.
METHODS: Th

Radiation necrosis is a rare but serious complication of pelvic chemoradiotherapy that may closely mimic tumor recurrence on both imaging and clinical examination. We describe the case of a 43-year-old woman with FIGO stage II vaginal squamous cell carcinoma and synchronous CIN3 who developed profuse vaginal discharge and necrotic cervical lesions five months after completing chemoradiation and brachytherapy. MRI revealed a necrotic cervical mass with suspicious features, while biopsies initially yielded inconclusive results. A multidisciplinary approach was adopted: the patient received empir
