Lifespan and disease predispositions in the Irish Wolfhound: a review.

Several disease predispositions of Irish Wolfhounds are mentioned in the veterinary literature, but these lists vary greatly between different publications. This article reviews findings on lifespan as well as disease predispositions that have been reported in the literature. Hereditary mechanisms found so far are discussed, including their implications for breeding healthier dogs, the ethical necessity of which is stressed under the aspect of animal welfare. An open health registry, combined with the estimation of breeding values, seems to be the most promising approach. Furthermore, routine

In vivo transduction of photoreceptors or ciliary body by intravitreal injection of pseudotyped adenoviral vectors.

Strategies for retargeting adenoviral (Ad) vectors have been developed, but their in vivo efficacy remains to be demonstrated. Gene delivery to specific ocular cell types represents an approach to treating many diseases that cause irreversible blindness. One of these cell types, the photoreceptor (PR), is not infected by standard Ad5-based vectors. We evaluated gene delivery after intraocular injection of Ads pseudotyped with three different fiber proteins and found three distinct patterns of infection. An intravitreally injected Ad5 vector readily infected the iris, corneal endothelium, and c

Tractional Retinal Detachment Related to Hemoglobin C Trait Retinopathy: A Case Report.

Hemoglobin C (HbC) disease is an uncommon disease that is generally considered benign, causing only occasionally painless hematuria, osteomyelitis, and dental abnormalities. Ocular manifestations have rarely been described in these patients. Here we report a novel ophthalmological manifestation of the disease. A 20-year-old woman presented with progressive visual loss in her right eye due to tractional retinal detachment. The left eye was apparently normal, but wide-field fluorescence angiography showed mild peripheral ischemia with multiple vascular abnormalities. Vitrectomy was performed and

Evaluating the impact of anti-CGRP monoclonal antibodies on retinal features in migraine patients: a retrospective optical coherence tomography study.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a disabling neurovascular disorder characterized by recurrent attacks that lead to extracranial and visual involvement. Several studies have investigated the retinal vasculature features in individuals with migraine, but there have been conflicting results. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate retinal structure in migraine patients before (T0) and after 6-month therapy (T1) with anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), using optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. DESIGN: A case-control and longitudinal study was conducted between January 2021 a

A method for mapping retinal images in early visual cortical areas.

The visual cortex has been a heavily studied region in neuroscience due to many factors, not the least of which is its well-defined retinotopic organization. This organization makes it possible to predict the general location of cortical regions that stimuli will activate during visual tasks. However, the precise and accurate mapping of these regions in human patients takes time, effort, and participant compliance that can be difficult in many patient populations. In humans, this retino-cortical mapping has typically been done using functional localizers which maximally activate the area of in

Therapeutic and diagnostic advances in Stickler syndrome.

UNLABELLED: The Stickler syndromes are the leading cause of inherited retinal detachment and the most common cause of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in childhood. The clinical and molecular genetic spectrum of this connective tissue disorder is discussed in this article, emphasising the key role the ophthalmologist has to play in the identification, diagnosis and prevention of blindness in the increasingly widely recognised sub-groups with ocular-only (or minimal systemic) involvement. Without diagnosis and prophylaxis in such high-risk subgroups, these patients are at high risk of Giant Re

Advancing prediction of age-related vascular cognitive impairment based on peripheral and retinal vascular health in a pilot study: a novel comprehensive assessment developed for a prospective workplace-based cohort (The Semmelweis Study).

With a growing elderly population in the European Union, age-related diseases associated with unhealthy aging pose increasing public health challenges, including a loss of independence and heightened societal burdens. The Semmelweis Study, a prospective occupational cohort study in Hungary, seeks to identify determinants of unhealthy aging, focusing on the complex relationship between lifestyle, environmental, occupational factors, and the development of chronic age-associated diseases, including age-related vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). The primary objective of this pilot study was to

N-Glycosylation Patterns across the Age-Related Macular Degeneration Spectrum.

The pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) remains elusive, despite numerous research studies. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the changes of plasma and IgG-specific N-glycosylation across the disease severity spectrum. We examined 2835 subjects from the 10.001 Dalmatians project, originating from the isolated Croatian islands of Vis and Korčula. All subjects were classified into four groups, namely (i) bilateral AMD, (ii) unilateral AMD, (iii) early-onset drusen, and (iv) controls. We analysed plasma and IgG N-glycans measured by HPLC and their association with retinal fund

Astragaloside suppresses tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 5 signaling pathway and alleviates neurodegenerative changes in retinal pigment epithelial cells induced by isoflurane.

Epidemiological studies showed that isoflurane, a general anesthetic widely used in surgery including those for the children, is associated with impairment of neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which are related to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Astragaloside (AS) is an antioxidant derivative from a traditional Chinese herbal medicine Astragalus membraneaceus Bunge. In this study, we used retinal pigment epithelial cells, which share plenty of features with neurodegenerative diseases

From fundus to filtration: AI-driven retinal phenotyping as a framework for non-invasive prediction of kidney pathological categories (the "virtual renal biopsy" concept)- a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: The burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) continues to grow, affecting over 850 million individuals globally. Current methods to precisely and definitively classify CKD still rely on renal biopsy, a procedure with a 5.1% rate of major complications, and further cost and access complications in low-resource settings. The retina, containing the only accessible microvasculature for direct and non-invasive visualization, shares deep developmental and structural features with, and biologically plausible pathogenic overlap with, the kidney (see Sect. 3 for the distinction between establ

Severe retinal vascular lesions in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Retinal lesions in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are usually closely related to the patient's general condition and occur frequently in severe states such as renal or central nervous system involvement. However, improved treatment of SLE has reduced retinal involvement, and it is rare today to observe severe retinal lesions in patients with SLE. We report two cases of severe retinal vascular lesions in SLE patients who developed otherwise unremarkable systemic manifestations and laboratory findings.
