CYP46A1 is the cytochrome P450 enzyme that converts cholesterol to 24-hydroxycholesterol, a cholesterol elimination product and a potent liver X receptor (LXR) ligand. PURPOSE: To compare the risk factors and rate of progression of zone I versus zone II type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
METHODS: The medical records of consecutive preterm infants with bilateral type 1 ROP in zone I and age-matched control infants with type 1 ROP in zone II were retrospectively analyzed. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) results from the abnormal growth of blood vessels in the vascular bed supporting the developing retina. Estimated to cause up to 500 new cases of blindness in the U.S. each year, ROP affects primarily infants born at less than 1,500 g. Although its etiology is not well understood, ROP is thought to occur as a result of a complex interaction between oxygen and vascular growth factors. This article briefly reviews the history of ROP, discusses its pathophysiology, and addresses the risk factors and strategies for prevention.

OBJECTIVE: To measure agreement of plus disease diagnosis among retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) experts.
METHODS: A set of 34 wide-angle retinal photographs from infants with ROP was compiled on a secure Web site and was interpreted independently by 22 recognized ROP experts. Diagnostic agreement was analyzed using 3-level (plus, pre-plus, or neither) and 2-level (plus or not plus) categorizations.

PURPOSE: Long-term clinical studies have now shown that tight control of blood pressure in type 2 diabetes reduces the risk of diabetes-related death and common diabetic complications, including diabetic retinopathy. We recently examined a patient with ophthalmic manifestations of Wegener's granulomatosis in whom antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (cANCA) titers provided helpful diagnostic information. The criteria for inclusion have become more general, although most of the disorders have dysplastic features, many do not have a tendency for tumor formation. A 9-year-old boy with Duane's retraction syndrome and morning glory syndrome is presented. The right eye showed a grayish-pink optic disc, which had a deep excavation containing a white mass in its center and was surrounded by an annulus of pigment disturbance, i.e., consistent with the features of morning glory syndrome.
