Transition to motherhood in type 1 diabetes: design of the pregnancy and postnatal well-being in transition questionnaires.

BACKGROUND: Life transitions are associated with high levels of stress affecting health behaviours among people with Type 1 diabetes. Transition to motherhood is a major transition with potential complications accelerated by pregnancy with risks of adverse childbirth outcomes and added anxiety and worries about pregnancy outcomes. Further, preparing and going through pregnancy requires vigilant attention to a diabetes management regimen and detailed planning of everyday activities with added stress on women. Psychological and social well-being during and after pregnancy are integral for good p

Septic Arthritis of the Shoulder following Recent Varicella Zoster Virus Infection in an 18-month-old Child: A Case Report.

We present a case of an 18-month-old female child who attended the paediatric emergency department with mild dehydration, pyrexia and a healing chickenpox (varicella) rash. Her older brother recently recovered from chickenpox without complication and is believed to have been the source of her infection. Her classically self-limiting condition was initially treated supportively with oral fluids and benzydamine mouth spray, before two further presentations to the emergency department with worsening clinical deterioration, a protracted pyrexia and an exquisitely painful right shoulder prompted th

Vicarious Acquisition of Learned Helplessness During the COVID-19 Campus Epidemics in China: Interactions Between Embodied and Mediated Experiences.

Numerous universities nationwide announced urgent implementation of closed campus management due to the epidemics of COVID-19 in Chinese universities since March 2022, and a large number of students were under quarantine. This study aims to explore how embodied experiences (i.e., centralized quarantine and self-quarantine) and mediated experiences (i.e., exposure to media sources, pandemic information overload, and online help seeking) influence the acquisition of learned helplessness during the campus epidemics among the Chinese university students, besides, how do these two types of experien

Mastering Sedation and Associated Respiratory Events through Simulation-Based Training: A Randomised Controlled Trial Involving Non-Anaesthesiology Residents.

Non-anaesthetists commonly administer procedural sedation worldwide, posing the risk of respiratory events that can lead to severe complications. This study aimed to evaluate whether simulation-based learning could lead to enhancements in the clinical proficiency of non-anaesthesiology residents in managing sedation and related respiratory complications. Following the evaluation of baseline clinical performance through a pre-test simulation, 34 residents were randomly allocated to either participate in an innovative simulation-based learning module (intervention group) or view a brief self-lea

Self-Exposure on Instagram and BMI: Relations With Body Image Among Both Genders.

Social media users can actively choose how they portray themselves and review the information they share to form and manage positive impressions on their audience. A high Body Mass Index (BMI) can lead to a bias of attention towards self-reported unattractive personal body areas. This dysfunctional body-related attention can lead to increased body dissatisfaction. Concerning social networks, people who usually post more photos on Instagram more frequently show higher body satisfaction. The main objective of this work was to analyze the relationship between BMI in young people, their own exposi

Implementation of supervised exercise therapy in a veteran population with symptomatic claudication.

BACKGROUND: Real-world implementation of supervised exercise therapy (SET) referral for symptomatic intermittent claudication has been limited by poor provider awareness around reimbursement and low patient adherence owing to factors including limited center availability and long travel distances to sites. METHODS: In this study, 76 of 77 consecutive male veteran patients with intermittent claudication managed at a single-center vascular specialty clinic were referred to SET prior to revascularization. Pre- and post-SET submaximal exercise treadmill testing was performed for assessment of exe

The psychological sequelae of maxillofacial trauma: a scoping review of the literature.

Managing the physical sequelae of facial trauma is routine for the maxillofacial surgeon. However, managing the psychological consequences is more challenging. The often violent mechanism of injury, changes in appearance, altered self-perception, and self-confidence can significantly impact daily life. This review summarises the literature regarding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and facial trauma, highlighting evidence to guide clinical practice. PubMed and MEDLINE were searched for relevant keywords and MeSH headings. Articles between 2000-2022 were independently reviewed by two autho

Cognitive-behavioral correlates of pupil control ideology.

Teacher's pupil control ideology is a central feature for the quality of the teacher-student relationship, which, in turn, impacts the teacher's level of well-being. The pupil control ideology refers to a teacher's belief system along a continuum from humanistic to custodial views. Teachers with humanistic orientation view students as responsible and, therefore, they exert a lower degree of control to manage students' classroom behaviors. Teachers with a custodial orientation view students as untrustworthy and, therefore, they exert a higher degree of control to manage students' classroom beha

Acne from the young patient's perspective.

Acne may significantly impact quality of life, self-esteem and self-worth. The aim of this paper was to provide an overview of the knowledge and perception of acne and its risk factors in adolescents and young adults. The most critical issues reported for an optimal management of this specific population were identified. A PubMed literature review of results from patient-oriented surveys published between 2007 and 2018 was conducted. Two different types of survey were used: those using either validated questionnaires or specifically developed questionnaires. No consistency or directly comparab

Uncertain call likelihood negatively affects sleep and next-day cognitive performance while on-call in a laboratory environment.

On-call working arrangements are employed in a number of industries to manage unpredictable events, and often involve tasks that are safety- or time-critical. This study investigated the effects of call likelihood during an overnight on-call shift on self-reported pre-bed anxiety, sleep and next-day cognitive performance. A four-night laboratory-based protocol was employed, with an adaptation, a control and two counterbalanced on-call nights. On one on-call night, participants were instructed that they would definitely be called during the night, while on the other on-call night they were told

Prevention and management of acute reactions to intravenous iron in surgical patients.

Absolute or functional iron deficiency is the most prevalent cause of anaemia in surgical patients, and its correction is a fundamental strategy within "Patient Blood Management" programmes. Offering perioperative oral iron for treating iron deficiency anaemia is still recommended, but intravenous iron has been demonstrated to be superior in most cases. However, the long-standing prejudice against intravenous iron administration, which is thought to induce anaphylaxis, hypotension and shock, still persists. With currently available intravenous iron formulations, minor infusion reactions are no

Effect of acupressure in treating urodynamic stress incontinence: a randomized controlled trial.

The efficacy of acupressure therapy in managing urodynamic stress incontinence has not been fully investigated. This study evaluates the effects of a validated acupressure protocol for treating women with urodynamic stress incontinence. A randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled trial with a before-and-after study design was conducted. Eighty-one women aged between 18 and 60 were recruited at a urogynecology clinic in an acute hospital in Hong Kong. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention (acupressure) group, a sham group, or a usual care (control) group. A validated acupr

Emotional intelligence is a protective factor for suicidal behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about what factors protect against the occurrence of suicidal ideation and attempts. We tested whether emotional intelligence (EI)-the ability to perceive, integrate into thoughts, understand, and manage one's emotions-decreases the likelihood of suicidal ideation and attempts among those at risk. METHOD: Adolescents (N = 54) aged 12 to 19 years were recruited from local psychiatric clinics and the community to participate in this cross-sectional laboratory-based study. Analyses examined whether the relations between childhood sexual abuse and suicidal ideation and

Treatment package to reduce SIB in a Lesch-Nyhan patient.

Self-destructive behaviour in LNS children results in a tremendous burden to parents, teachers, staff members, and other responsible for their care. As constant vigilance is not always feasible, developing alternate methods of managing SIB becomes imperative. This report presents our efforts to improve the care of an LNS child and to ease the burden on staff members and parents by obtaining special devices (e.g. the custom-made mouthguard and the gloves) to prevent him from injuring himself. Others (e.g. Letts & Hobson, 1975) have likewise reported success in fabricating custom-designed chairs
