We assayed for West Nile virus (WNV) antibodies to determine the presence and prevalence of WNV infection in three raptor populations in southeast Wisconsin during 2003-04. This study was conducted in the framework of ongoing population studies that started before WNV was introduced to the study area. For 354 samples, 88% of 42 adult Cooper's hawks (Accipiter cooperii), 2.1% of 96 nestling Cooper's hawks, 9.2% of 141 nestling red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), and 12% of 73 nestling great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) tested positive for WNV antibodies by the constant virus-serum dilution

Coccidioides DNA was amplified from serum by a PCR using coccidioid-specific primers. A 239-bp product was visualized when 10 fg of exogenous coccidioidal DNA was subjected to amplification. This product was demonstrated in some human and mouse sera prior to the detection of coccidioidal antibodies.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical significance of cases who were negative for hepatitis B serological markers but were found incidently to be HBV carriers with HBV replicative infection.
METHODS: In 12 out of the 50 biopsy proved cases, the hepatitis B serological markers and anti-HCV were all negative and ALT level also normal in repeated assays. Serum HBV DNA and HCV RNA of all the cases were analysed by PCR. Liver specimens were examined by immunohistochemistory for HBsAg and HBcAg. The pathological changes were classified into 4 grades and 4 stages, and Knodell HAI was also recorded.

Poliovirus-specific immunoglobulin A (IgA) is detected after infection with wild-type virus or vaccination with live attenuated oral poliovirus (OPV) but not after vaccination with inactivated poliovirus (IPV). Legionella sp. is the etiological agent of Legionnaires Disease and the Pontiac Fever, one of the new emerging diseases. Legionella are common in natural environment but in low number of bacteria cells, especially in comparison to other bacterial flora. Because of special nutritious requirement and long time of Legionella generation, the isolation of bacteria and the diagnosis of legionellosis cause many problems. In this publication some methods for detection of Legionella sp. in environmental water and clinical samples are presented and evaluated.

We report on a 47-year-old woman with a 10-year history of seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who had experienced an episode of bilateral aseptic pleuritis, and in whom livedo reticularis and ulcers had developed on both lower extremities. This paper reports the results of the dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dot-ELISA) for the serological diagnosis of 50 acute and 50 chronic Schistosoma japonicum-infected patients employing keyhole limpet haemocyanin (KLH) and soluble egg antigen (SEA) as the specific antigens. We used instrumental methods to characterise Lyme arthropathy in 79 patients with joint involvement and history of Lyme borreliosis. All of them had arthralgia and 45 of them also had arthritis. In 1992-94 we screened 6315 students for coeliac disease (CD) by testing antigliadin antibodies (AGA) as the first-level investigation. We found 28 biopsy-proven coeliac patients who were invited to start the gluten-free diet (GFD). The aim of this study was a clinical and laboratory follow-up in these screening-detected coeliac adolescents.
