Metals can be methylated in environmental aqueous media by a variety of organotin and organosilicon compounds. Main group metals and metalloids were surveyed for the identification of species that can either donate or accept methyl groups. The methylation of mercury(II) by trimethyltin cation was found to be a bimolecular reaction, the reaction rate of which decreased with increasing chloride concentration. Babesia bovis merozoites, externalized by removal of infected erythrocytes from ordinary culture conditions, were completely separated from red blood cells and stroma by centrifugation in a Percoll gradient. A merozoite band formed at a point corresponding to about 1.087 g/ml specific density. Infected red blood cells were concentrated approximately fourfold to obtain greater than 49.0% parasitemia after centrifugation in Percoll. Most highly enriched fractions positioned between 1.121 and 1.123 g/ml specific density. Full parasite viability was retained.

The retention of some rifamycins and steroids on diphenyl bonded pre-coated silica gel plates, in relation to the mobile phase used, was examined by thin-layer chromatography. Neat organic solvents, non-aqueous and aqueous binary mixtures were tested as eluents. This case note concerns an elderly amputee who presented with delayed healing in the stump. The use of a Silastic foam dressing is described which allowed both prosthetic fitting and final healing to occur simultaneously. The patient's stump ultimately healed and the subject was successfully discharged home walking with his prosthesis.

Twenty-six neonates presenting to Ahmadu Bello University Hospital, Zaria, with omphalocele were reviewed. Most sacs were heavily contaminated and some babies were hypothermic on admission. Treatment in most cases followed the standard textbook practice of attempting primary closure. Mesothelial cells were isolated from the peritoneal surface of rats using trypsinization. The cells were polygonal-shaped and proliferated rapidly forming confluent cultures. Application of colloidal silica to mesothelial cell cultures in doses known to induce peritoneal adhesion disease was injurious to the cells and reduced their synthesis of total proteins and collagen. Eighty-one central venous catheter placements have been carried out with a serious-complication rate of 3.7%. Major long-term complications occurred in 5 patients. Malplacement of the catheter was more common when the infraclavicular subclavian route was used. Inadvertent removal occurred on 10 occasions and a new design of catheter hub is expected to eliminate this problem.

A method of simultaneous separation of rifampicins O, S and rifamicin derivates S, SV in a thin layer of silica gel KSK No. 2 impregnated with acetate buffer, pH 4.6 in a solvent system chlorophorm-methanol (100:5) was developed.
