Self-assessed cognitive function in snorers and sleep apneics. An epidemiological study of 1,504 females and males aged 30-60 years: the Dan-MONICA II Study.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the relation between every-night (habitual) snoring, sleep apnea and cognitive complaints (concentration and memory problems) in an adult population-based sample. In the Dan-MONICA (MONItoring trends in CArdiovascular diseases) 1,504 males and females aged 30, 40, 50 and 60 years were classified according to their snoring habits. Nocturnal respiration was measured in 748 participants. The following measures were regarded as potential confounders: age, gender, unintended sleepiness, insomnia, depression, hypnotic use, alcohol and tobacco consumption by

Colic, sleep inertia, melatonin and circannual rhythms.

Colic is periodic behavior occurring at the end of the day during the first 3 months of life characterized by crying. It is hypothesized that the crying at the end of the day is due to sleep inertia or a state dissociation during which the infant is simultaneously partially awake and partially asleep because of the absence of a melatonin diurnal rhythm. The melatonin timing mechanisms, which codes for day length, is initiated prenatally by the maternal pineal gland, and after 3 months postnatally, the melatonin nocturnal secretion rhythm is maintained by the infant's pineal gland. Familial dystonic choreoathetosis with myokymia; a sleep responsive disorder.

A family is presented with paroxysmal dystonic choreoathetosis transmitted as a dominant trait over five generations. The family is unusual in the marked responsiveness of the episodes to short periods of sleep in several members, in the very variable age of onset, and in the association with prominent myokymia in some cases. These overlap features suggest a link between paroxysmal dystonic choreoathetosis and familial paroxysmal ataxia with myokymia.

[Lormetazepam in the treatment of sleep disorders in a medical practice; double-blind test on 100 patients (author's transl)].

Lormetazepam (1 mg) and diazepam (5 mg) were compared in a double-blind study of 100 patients with sleep disorders associated with a medical illness. Assignment to one of two treatment groups was at random. Lormetazepam had a greater hypnotic effect than diazepam in all significant variables (P less than 0.05). There was no hangover effect or other side effects with lormetazepam, which was thus superior to diazepam also in this respect (P less than 0.05).

Episodic hormone secretion during sleep in Kleine-Levin syndrome: evidence for hypothalamic dysfunction.

"Acute" hypothalamic-pituitary function tests including insulin tolerance test, LRH, ACTH and TRH stimulation tests and nocturnal secretory pattern of human growth hormone, 11-OHCS, prolactin, FSH, LH and TSH were studied in a 23-year-old male with Kleine-Levin syndrome during the course of a typical hypersomnic attack. The "acute" tests revealed paradoxical growth-hormone response to TRH stimulation, borderline high basal plasma prolactin levels with normal response to TRH. The hormonal secretory pattern during sleep revealed abnormalities in LH, 11-OHCS and prolactin secretion. These togethe

Italian Association of Sleep Medicine (AIMS) position statement and guideline on the treatment of menopausal sleep disorders.

Insomnia, vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and depression often co-occur after the menopause, with consequent health problems and reductions in quality of life. The aim of this position statement is to provide evidence-based advice on the management of postmenopausal sleep disorders derived from a systematic review of the literature. The latter yielded results on VMS, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and restless leg syndrome (RLS). Overall, the studies show that menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) improves VMS, insomnia, and mood. Several antidepressants can improve in

Persistent Olfactory Dysfunction Three Years After COVID-19: A Multicenter Observational Study.

Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a common sequela of SARS-CoV-2 infection, but its prevalence and associated factors beyond 2 years remain unclear. In this multicenter observational study, we assessed 155 recovered COVID-19 patients approximately three years after infection and included 170 age-matched healthy controls as a reference group. Demographic, clinical, psychological, and sleep-related data were collected through structured interviews. Olfactory function at the 3-year assessment was objectively evaluated using Toyota-Takagi (T&T) olfactometry. Paired baseline-to-follow-up T&T data were

The Role of Sleep Impairment in Associations Between Pain and Nicotine/Tobacco Dependence in Wave 6 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study.

OBJECTIVE: Tobacco use is a significant national health concern that frequently co-occurs with chronic pain. Both pain and use of nicotine/tobacco have been linked to greater sleep impairments (i.e., trouble initiating and maintaining sleep), and there is reason to believe that more severe pain may indirectly contribute to greater nicotine dependence via sleep impairments. Therefore, the goal of this study was to examine indirect associations between pain severity and nicotine dependence via sleep impairment severity among adults who use cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery systems (END

Postconcussive Sleep Problems and Glymphatic Dysfunction Predict Persistent Working Memory Decline.

Persistent working memory decline (PWMD) is a common sequela of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), yet reliable biomarkers for predicting long-term working memory outcomes remain lacking. The glymphatic system, a brain-wide waste clearance network, plays a crucial role in cognitive recovery. The diffusion tensor imaging analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index, a noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based technique, offers a promising approach to evaluate perivascular fluid dynamics-a key component of glymphatic function. However, its role in long-term working memory dys

Sleep Disturbance and Hyperactivity Detected by Actigraphy in Rats with Allergic Rhinitis or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Actigraphy is an easy and noninvasive method used to monitor human ultradian cycles. However, to our knowledge, it has been not applied to experiments with rodents. Therefore, using actigraphy, we assessed the ultradian cycles and behavior of rats. Rats with or without allergic rhinitis wore an actigraphy device, and triaxial acceleration was recorded. The counts that represent physical activity were lower from 8:00 to 20:00 than those from 20:00 to 8:00 in control rats, suggesting that their sleep phase was from 8:00 to 20:00 and their awake phase from 20:00 to 8:00. The counts from 8:00 to 1
