Non-communicable disease, sociodemographic factors, and risk of death from infection: a UK Biobank observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have been highlighted as important risk factors for COVID-19 mortality. However, insufficient data exist on the wider context of infectious diseases in people with NCDs. We aimed to investigate the association between NCDs and the risk of death from any infection before the COVID-19 pandemic (up to Dec 31, 2019). METHODS: For this observational study, we used data from the UK Biobank observational cohort study to explore factors associated with infection death. We excluded participants if data were missing for comorbidities, body-mass index, smokin

Closed Incision Negative Pressure Therapy Achieves Better Outcome Than Standard Wound Care: Clinical Outcome and Cost-Effectiveness Analysis in Open Ventral Hernia Repair With Synthetic Mesh Positioning.

Background Surgical site infections (SSIs) and surgical site occurrences (SSOs) are frequent post-operative complications that are dependent on the presence of different risk factors. The use of closed incision negative pressure therapy (ciNPT) is considered a measure by the WHO guidelines for prevention of SSIs. The prevention of SSOs is an extremely important issue in the ventral hernia repair (VHR) surgical field. SSO onset not only affects the patient's quality of life, but can also cause the onset of life-threatening conditions that may require re-hospitalization, re-intervention and ofte

[Secondary prevention in acute myocardial infarction].

Myocardial infarction is still one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity in Western countries. The advances made in the last 30 years have made it possible to reduce mortality significantly (which is currently below two digits) as well as morbidity. The subject of secondary prevention of myocardial infarction gains particular significance in this context since 10 to 15% of the patients who survive the hospital phase of myocardial infarction die during the first year following discharge and, of these deaths, half occur in the first three months. Therefore, it is necessary to make an ear

Smoking cessation policy gaps in South Korea: an MPOWER Framework analysis with AI-assisted multi-source evidence synthesis (2021-2026).

Smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in South Korea, accounting for 58,000-68,000 deaths annually and socioeconomic costs of approximately ₩15 trillion. Despite demonstrated cessation program effectiveness, participation has declined 62% since 2017, and Korea's tobacco landscape is undergoing rapid transformation-including a decade-long cigarette price freeze, one of the world's highest heated tobacco product market shares (18.4%), and the widening gap between total tobacco product use and cigarette-only prevalence. This review applies the World Health Organization Framework

Patient-Related Predictors of Opioid Use, Pain and Opioid-Related Adverse Events in the First 24 h After Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Acute postoperative pain is typically managed with titration of opioids, balancing pain intensity and opioid-related adverse events (ORADEs). Often, the dosing strategy is individualised based on the clinician's intuition or expertise. The influence of broader patient-related predictors remains insufficiently synthesised. This systematic review aimed to synthesise evidence on associations between patient-related predictors and opioid use, pain intensity and ORADEs within 24 h after surgery. DATABASES AND DATA TREATMENT: In this systematic review, we searched MEDLINE

Effects of cigarette smoke and HIV-1 factors on blood-brain barrier integrity and permeability in an in vitro model.

BACKGROUND: HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment (HAND) is a common complication of HIV-1 infection, which can be exacerbated by exposure to cigarette smoke (CS). Tight junction proteins (TJPs) of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) play a crucial role in maintaining BBB integrity and preventing the entry of circulating toxic factors, including those resulting from HIV-1 infection, into the central nervous system. Both CS exposure and HIV-1 infection can independently disrupt TJPs and compromise BBB integrity; however, the combined or individual effects of these factors on BBB TJPs remain poorly
