BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and features of the major cutaneous manifestations (erythema nodosum [EN] and pyoderma gangrenosum [PG]) and to determine the associations between cutaneous manifestations and other extraintestinal manifestations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
METHODS: The mucocutaneous manifestations of patients with IBD were studied between December 2002 and June 2007. All patients underwent a detailed whole body examination by a gastroenterologist and dermatologist.

The Behçet's disease is a vasculitis of an unknown origin. Vascular inflammatory lesions predominantly affect veins, potentially leading to superficial or deep thrombophlebitis. Arterial involvement is rare, mainly aneurysms. We display two case reports of patients where Behçet's disease is revealed by celiac trunk aneurysm. The symptoms are nonspecific. Ultrasound Doppler and angioscan are a key to the diagnosis. The two patients received medical and surgical treatment. PURPOSE: To determine the epidemiology of Behçet's disease in Western Switzerland and to study the characteristics of ocular disease.
METHODS: Patients newly diagnosed with Behçet's disease, seen from January 1990 to December 1998 at Hôpital Jules Gonin, La Source Eye Center, and the Division of Immunology and Allergy, University of Lausanne, were analyzed. The Japanese diagnostic criteria for Behçet's disease were used and both complete and incomplete forms were included. Incidence, proportion of cases with ocular involvement, and the characteristics of ocular disease were determined.

Chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis can result in inadequate oral intake, local and systemic infection, a prolonged hospital stay, and increased cost of treatment. Treatment of the pain resulting from this condition can greatly lessen these problems. Hydroxypropyl cellulose gel with benzocaine (Zilactin B) has been shown to effectively reduce the pain of mucositis for up to 3 hours.

Topoisomerase I inhibitors are new compounds of interest for cancer chemotherapy. We performed a study with GI147211, a new semisynthetic camptothecin analogue, to determine the absolute bioavailability of the drug given orally. Patients with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of a solid tumour refractory to standard forms of therapy were eligible for the study. Oral mucositis is a dose-limiting toxicity of high-dose etoposide regimens. Since etoposide is excreted in saliva, we tested the hypothesis that the induction of xerostomia would reduce the severity of the mucositis. We designed a phase II trial of propantheline in patients receiving high-dose ICE (ifosfamide 20 mg/m2, carboplatin 1.8 g/m2, etoposide 3 g/m2 in divided doses over 6 days) chemotherapy plus autologous hematopoietic stem cell support. The effect of mood, the common cold, amount of sleep, and sunshine on recurring herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection was investigated using daily self-reports over a 3-month period from 23 female and 15 male patients with genital herpes and 26 female and two male patients with oral herpes. Thalidomide was given to 15 patients with severe orogenital ulceration (OGU). 4 patients underwent a double-blind controlled trial with glutethimide as placebo and 11 were treated openly. Treatment with thalidomide produced complete resolution of ulcers in 14 and significant improvement in the remaining patient. No peripheral neuropathies developed. Patients did not respond to glutethimide. Thalidomide is an effective treatment for severe OGU. Adequate contraceptive measures should be taken during treatment.

Infections with herpes simplex virus (HSV) are extremely common. HSV infection may be asymptomatic or may cause any one of a wide variety of disease syndromes. In this review, the physical properties and mode of replication of HSV are briefly described, and an outline of the different clinical manifestations associated with HSV infection is presented. Principles of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these infections are also discussed.
