PURPOSE: To evaluate the presence of stereopsis in children with ametropic amblyopia, including hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism.
METHODS: A total of 205 children with the average age of 5.2 years were selected, including 65 cases of astigmatic amblyopia, 30 of myopic amblyopia, and 110 of hyperopic amblyopia. The near stereoacuity test (zero disparity stereoacuity, crossed disparity, and uncrossed disparity) and distance stereoacuity test by synoptophore with Yan's random-dot test in The Examination Chart of Stereoscopic Acuity were performed. Visual acuity was examined with the standard S

PURPOSE: To report the impact of the adoption of a low oxygen saturation policy on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) incidence at a single tertiary care center.
METHODS: ROP incidence, procedures for ROP, and neonatal outcome among very low birth weight infants were compared before and after the adoption of a low saturation policy, which took place in 2004. The Mann– Whitney test was performed to look for differences.
RESULTS: The incidence of severe ROP significantly decreased from 5.3% of live very low birth weight infants between 1999 and 2004 to 1% of live very low birth weight infants be

PURPOSE: To determine ocular geometry and refraction in children with a history of preterm birth, and compare them to age-matched full-term children.
METHODS: In a prospective case-control study, 50 eyes of 27 premature patients 7 to 14 years of age were evaluated with Scheimpflug camera after cycloplegia. Age-matched full-term children comprised the control group (68 eyes of 34 children). All of the eligible eyes had a normal-appearing posterior pole. Anterior segment parameters such as keratometry, anterior chamber volume or thickness, and lens thickness were measured. Corneal thickness, lo

Very low birth weight (VLBW) infants have ophthalmologic examinations for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) prior to discharge, with appropriate follow-up and intervention where appropriate. Eye drops such as cylopentolate, tropicamide, and phenylephrine are used at different concentrations to provide proper pupil dilation for screening ROP. Topical instillation of eye drops may cause mild or severe ocular or systemic adverse effects. Early recognition of systemic toxicity after eye drop instillation is important. The authors present a case of a VLBW infant who developed significant abdominal s

Infectious endophthalmitis is a rare but severe complication of septecemia, intraocular surgeries, or penetrating eye trauma. The etiology, prognosis, and management of pediatric endophthalmitis resulting from exogenous and endogenous infections are reviewed. Open-globe trauma and glaucoma surgery are the most frequent causes of endophthalmitis in children, whereas endogenous infection is the least common cause. Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species are common bacterial agents in both posttraumatic and postoperative pediatric endophthalmitis, whereas Candida albicans is a commonly reported

PURPOSE: To evaluate the epidemiology and outcomes of all pediatric canalicular lacerations at a high-volume urban tertiary eye care center. Variables of repair were evaluated in relation to age and success of repair.
METHODS: A retrospective review over a 10-year span of all primary pediatric canalicular laceration repairs was performed. Variables included patient demographics, repair setting, mechanism of injury, associated injuries, type of stent used, and success of repair.
RESULTS: Of 137 canalicular lacerations evaluated, 27.7% occurred in patients younger than 18 years. The majority o

PURPOSE: To compare retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening experiences using binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy (BIO) and wide-field digital retinal imaging (WFDRI) at centers in Auckland, New Zealand, with those of other centers in Australasia.
METHODS: A web-based survey regarding methods of screening for ROP was distributed to ophthalmologists in Australia and New Zealand.
RESULTS: Thirty-five ophthalmologists participated in the survey, of whom 30 participated in ROP screening. Sixteen respondents used BIO exclusively, 2 used WFDRI exclusively, and 12 used both. Of these, 3 respondent

PURPOSE: To investigate the frequency of choroidal abnormalities in pediatric patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 detected by infrared reflectance imaging.
METHODS: The fundus of 38 eyes of 19 patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 was examined using infrared reflectance imaging with optical coherence tomography. Forty eyes of 20 age-matched controls were examined similarly. Each patient was evaluated for the presence and the number of choroidal abnormalities. The correlation between the total number of choroidal abnormalities and the patient's age was studied.
RESULTS: A total of 19 pati

Juvenile xanthogranuloma is a benign non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis characterized by skin lesions that tend to be self-limited. Ocular lesions can occur in juvenile xanthogranuloma, most commonly presenting as an iris granuloma. Skin lesions of juvenile xanthogranuloma may appear similar to lesions of mastocytosis. Mastocytosis includes a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by the proliferation and abnormal infiltration of mast cells. Rubbing of cutaneous lesions leads to the release of histamine, causing the lesions to urticate. Juvenile xanthogranuloma and mastocytosis skin lesi

An 8-week-old healthy female infant manifested leukocoria and reduced vision in the left eye. She was found to have bilateral combined hamartomas of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium. There were no other features of neurofibromatosis type 2 and brain imaging was normal. At 6 months of age, subtle posterior subcapsular lens opacity was noted in the right eye. Genetic testing for neurofibromatosis type 2 was advised but not performed. At 3 years of age, leg weakness with quadriceps atrophy led to neuroimaging and detection of multiple tumors, including bilateral vestibular schwannomas an

PURPOSE: To determine if and when a secondary intraocular lens (IOL) can be beneficial to the successful treatment of a monocular infantile cataract.
METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed medical records of children undergoing treatment of a monocular congenital cataract from 1996 to 2009 at one pediatric ophthalmology practice. Patients had unilateral cataracts removed by age 8 months and a secondary IOL inserted prior to 6 years of age. At the final visit, the children had to perform linear Snellen visual acuity testing.
RESULTS: Of 11 identified patients, 8 had treatment onset by age

The authors present the case of a child with multiple limbal dermoids and morning glory disc anomaly in the right eye. These anomalies are rarely associated and this is the first report of co-occurrence in the same eye in a patient without additional systemic anomalies.

Retinal dysplasia occurs in the setting of sporadic and syndromic holoprosencephaly, which often has associated ocular malformations. The pathology of this dysplasia, which includes rosettes, has been previously described. However, its funduscopic findings have not been well documented. The authors present the fundus images of a patient with severe holoprosencephaly with retinal dysplasia and bilateral optic nerve colobomas that resulted in death 2 weeks after birth.

A 17-month-old girl referred for a suspected ciliary body medulloepithelioma was found to have persistent fetal vasculature. Fluorescein angiography showed perfused hyaloid artery posterior tunica vasculosa lentis with brittle star appearance and nonperfused anterior pupillary membrane. Ultrasound biomicroscopy confirmed absence of iris or ciliary body solid tumor.

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a subtype of thrombotic microangiopathy associated with complement alternative pathway dysregulation. It is clinically characterized by a relapsing course and a poor prognosis. Multiple organ systems are commonly affected by thrombotic microangiopathy in pediatric atypical HUS; however, ocular involvement is rarely reported. The case of an 11-year-old girl diagnosed as having atypical HUS who presented with bilateral central retinal vein occlusions with macular subhyaloid hemorrhage during her initial onset and ophthalmoplegia, diplopia, and optic di
