A case of renal glycosuria is reported. A 55 year old female was diagnosed and treated in an upcountry hospital for diabetes mellitus. She developed symptoms of hypoglycaemia while on an oral hypoglycaemic agent, leading to her admission in Mulago Hospital. Persistent glycosuria was noted despite treatment and normal serum glucose. Five cases of hereditary high red cell membrane phosphatidylcholine hemolytic anemia in three families were described. All cases were clinically manifested by jaundice and splenomegaly. The endocrine deficiency may be of hypothalamic-pituitary origin or may be due to primary failure of the adrenal gland or the thyroid gland. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed in 50 Ethiopians with proven porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) in 30 of whom urine sugar was also checked. The result of the OGTT, interpreted according to WHO criteria, showed that 35 (70%) patients had normal OGTT, 14 (28%) impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and 1 diabetes mellitus. Previous methods for measuring intestinal permeability involve the urinary measurements of various poorly digested sugar or inert poly(ethylene glycol) polymers after their oral administration. The results reflect a variety of gastrointestinal parameters including transit time, mucosal surface area and transfer, mesenteric blood and/or lymphatic flow and renal function, as well as mucosal permeability. Anatomic lesions associated with hypothermia are variable and nonspecific. Only a few gross lesions and no microscopic pathology were noted in the acute deaths of this series. An interesting anatomic observation was the low weight of the lungs in 45% of the hypothermic deaths. This communication reports studies on the composition of the urinary glycosaminoglycans and oligosaccharides in mucopolysaccharidosis patients who were being treated by fibroblast transplantation.
