Perceptions of Aging from Persons Living and Aging with HIV: A Qualitative Study.

Background/Objectives: People aging with HIV (PAWHs) face distinct health challenges, including early onset of aging and heightened risk for chronic comorbidities despite effective antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, significant gaps persist in understanding the lived experience and how PAWHs perceive the interplay between their controlled HIV and the aging process. This study examined PAWHs' illness perceptions of aging, health, and relationship of HIV to other health conditions. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 25 PAWHs (mean age 63.5; mean t

Risk perceptions and behaviours of beachgoers toward recreational water quality in Canada: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Beach water leisure activities can increase the risk of acquiring infections from recreational water, and children are particularly at risk. However, gaps exist in public awareness of accessing and understanding beach water quality information and the risk of acquiring illnesses. There is no such available research in Canada, and this study was conducted to explore risk perceptions and behaviours of parent beachgoers. METHODS: We conducted two focus groups in each of three Canadian provinces: Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia in July 2023. Participants were parents or guardi

Acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility of a point-of-care ultrasound program for the diagnosis of forearm fractures in rural Nepal: a mid-level provider qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: In Nepal, fractures contribute an estimated 2.5 million disability-adjusted life years annually, with upper-extremity injuries representing the most common fracture type. While radiography is the diagnostic standard, access to X-ray machines and trained technicians is limited in rural Nepal, leading to delayed diagnosis and substantial patient costs. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a low-cost, portable imaging modality that has demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing upper-extremity fractures and is well suited to resource-limited settings. METHODS: Sevent

Retirement intentions of late-career female nurses: a phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Population aging, labour shortages and economic conditions are increasing concerns worldwide regarding retirement decisions of nurses. Although previous studies have examined factors influencing nurses' retirement, limited research has explored how late-career female nurses perceive and experience the transition to retirement, particularly from a qualitative perspective, and how these perceptions reflect the current situation in healthcare settings. Hence, this study aims to fill this gap by exploring the perceptions of late-career female nurses about retirement and the interplay o

Integrating 3D-printed sclero-corneal models into Rigid Gas Permeable contact lens training: A pilot study.

PURPOSE: Rigid gas permeable contact lenses provide excellent optical quality and oxygen permeability, but their fitting process is complex. Traditional teaching methods, such as student-to-student practice, present limitations regarding safety and corneal geometry diversity. A kit of 3D-printed Sclero-Corneal Surfaces (SCSs) has been proposed as a hybrid tool combining hands-on lens manipulation with the flexibility and geometry diversity of simulations. This study evaluated the viability of these artificial SCSs for rigid gas permeable contact lenses training and used questionnaires to asses

Examining caregiver-adolescent symptom agreement and its influence on treatment outcomes: a quantitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Caregivers play a critical role in identifying and interpreting adolescent mental health symptoms, yet their perceptions often differ from those of adolescents themselves. Such discrepancies can influence treatment engagement and outcomes, making it essential to understand the factors that affect caregiver-adolescent agreement in symptom reporting. METHODS: This study analyzed baseline depression and anxiety symptom reports from 763 caregiver-adolescent dyads enrolled in a virtual intensive outpatient program. Agreement between adolescent self-reports and caregiver proxy reports

To treat or not to treat? Oncologists' perceptions and experiences regarding overtreatment in end stage cancer patients.

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive care at end-of-life can harm quality of life without significantly improving survival. Despite best practice guidelines, research shows that oncologists continue to provide too much treatment to patients, especially at the end-of-life. Understanding the perceptions of oncologists regarding unnecessary care toward end-of-life can inform interventions and mitigate overuse. This study aimed to understand the perceptions and experiences of oncologists regarding why overuse of services is occurring for cancer patients at the end-of-life and elucidate factors which impede th
