Tartrazine clearing of the tympanic membrane for improved visualization of the middle ear.

Biological tissues intrinsically scatter light, which limits the depth of penetration of optical imaging. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, label-free imaging modality that generates real-time 2- and 3- dimensional in vivo images with high spatial resolution (<10 µm). While OCT has been used in nascent otologic studies to noninvasively diagnose otitis media, distinguish cholesteatoma from normal middle ear mucosa, and identify vascular tumors of the middle ear, the intrinsic light scattering of the tympanic membrane (TM) limits OCT penetration depth. Optical clearing agents

Topical Review: Studies of Ocular Function and Disease Using Hyperspectral Imaging.

Advances in imaging technology over the last two decades have produced significant innovations in medical imaging. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is one of these innovations, enabling powerful new imaging tools for clinical use and greater understanding of tissue optical properties and mechanisms underlying eye disease.Hyperspectral imaging is an important and rapidly growing area in medical imaging, making possible the concurrent collection of spectroscopic and spatial information that is usually obtained from separate optical recordings. In this review, we describe several mainstream techniques

Optical tomographic imaging for breast cancer detection.

Diffuse optical breast imaging utilizes near-infrared (NIR) light propagation through tissues to assess the optical properties of tissues for the identification of abnormal tissue. This optical imaging approach is sensitive, cost-effective, and does not involve any ionizing radiation. However, the image reconstruction of diffuse optical tomography (DOT) is a nonlinear inverse problem and suffers from severe illposedness due to data noise, NIR light scattering, and measurement incompleteness. An image reconstruction method is proposed for the detection of breast cancer. This method splits the i

Uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema syndrome associated with recurrent vitreous hemorrhage.

CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old pseudophakic male with recurrent blurred vision episodes associated with uveitis, hyphema, glaucoma and vitreous hemorrhage. Iris transillumination defects and apposition of the optic and iris were found. The patient was diagnosed with Uveitis-Glaucoma-Hyphema (UGH) Syndrome. DISCUSSION: Mechanical irritation of the iris is a consequence of intraocular lens malposition and causes UGH Syndrome. Occasionally it is associated with vitreous hemorrhage. Lens malposition is detected by optical coherence tomography and/or ultrasound biomicroscopy.

Bilateral optic neuritis with branch retinal artery occlusion associated with vaccination.

A case of a 40-year old marine with bilateral optic neuritis and a branch retinal artery occlusion after vaccination is presented. Blood investigations showed no abnormalities. Cerebrospinal fluid studies revealed a lymphocytic pleocytosis and IgG antibodies against hepatitis A and rabies. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain were negative. A diagnosis of vaccine-induced auto-immune demyelinative optic neuritis was made. The clinical picture improved after systemic corticosteroid treatment.

Choroidal thickness in patients with a history of retinopathy of prematurity.

IMPORTANCE: The cause of reduced vision in patients with a history of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is not yet fully understood. The role of the choroid in ROP remains unknown and existing studies of choroidal thickness in patients with a history of ROP are limited. It might be helpful to understand the association of the choroid with ROP by measuring the choroidal thickness in patients with a history of ROP and correlating these findings with the visual outcome of these patients. OBJECTIVE: To examine choroidal thickness by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography in children with a h

Biometry challenges in the longest eyes we have encountered to date.

PURPOSE: This report aims to present biometry challenges and solutions for a patient with the longest eyes we have encountered to date. OBSERVATIONS: A 41-year-old woman with a history of Crouzon syndrome, extreme axial myopia, and posterior segment staphylomas was referred for cataract evaluation. Optical biometry was attempted using two partial coherence interferometry and optical low-coherence reflectometry devices that were available in 2011. Neither device could measure the axial length (AL) of either eye, unfortunately. We were able to measure them by A scan ultrasound, however, with re

Septo-optic dysplasia with fovea plana: A case report.

Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is characterized by optic nerve hypoplasia, pituitary gland hypoplasia, and midline abnormalities of the brain. The phenotype of SOD is highly heterogeneous, and the existence of at least two features is considered sufficient for diagnosis. Fovea plana is the absence of a foveal pit in the central fovea, and despite being a developmental abnormality of the fovea, good visual acuity may be retained in some individuals. In this case, a 12-year-old female presented to the ophthalmology clinic with the complaint of blurred vision in her right eye. In dilated fundus exam

Optic nerve enlargement and chronic visual loss.

We present four patients with sarcoidosis of the anterior visual pathways. The first patient presented with unilateral visual loss, a mass lesion at the optic nerve head, and an enlarged orbital optic nerve. The second patient presented with bilateral progressive painless visual loss, associated with optic nerve pallor and visual field loss. In these two patients, optic nerve biopsy was diagnostic of sarcoidosis. The third patient developed optic nerve and chiasmal involvement after sarcoidosis was established by lacrimal gland biopsy. The fourth patient had optic nerve, pulmonary, and lymph n

[Chondral and osteochondral defects : Representation by imaging methods].

Morphological imaging of cartilage at high resolution allows the differentiation of chondral and osteochondral lesions. Nowadays, magnetic resonance imaging is the principal diagnostic tool in the assessment of cartilage structure and composition. Conventional radiography, computed tomography, ultrasound or optical coherence tomography are adjunct diagnostic modalities in the assessment of cartilage pathologies. The present article discusses the up-to-date diagnostic practice of cartilage imaging in terms of its scientific basis and current clinical status, requirements, techniques and image i

Serous Retinal Detachment in Dome-shaped Macula with 7 Years Follow-up.

Dome-shaped macula (DSM) was first described by Gaucher et al. as a convex protrusion of macula within a staphyloma in highly myopic eyes that cause visual impairment associated with serous foveal detachment (SFD). We describe a patient with persistent SFD in DSM documented by serial spectral domain optical coherence tomography for 7 years with stable vision.

Neuroimaging diagnostic and monitoring approaches in ophthalmology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review new applications of optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology in neuro-ophthalmology. We also describe new technologies for visualizing the extracranial vessels in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA). RECENT FINDINGS: Newer OCT modalities are expanding the evaluation of the optic disc, and are being applied to a number of neurologic conditions such as demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease. Swept-source OCT and enhanced-depth imaging OCT are refining the fine-grained analysis of the optic nerve head in the diagnosis of papilledema and optic nerve

Optic nerve imaging in multiple sclerosis.

In this article I review the last 10 years of progress in the imaging of the optic nerve with a particular focus on applications to multiple sclerosis (MS). Development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the optic nerve has lagged behind imaging of other parts of the CNS. These limitations are due to technical challenges related to the small size and mobility of the optic nerves and artefacts caused by surrounding cerebrospinal fluid, orbital fat, and air-bone interfaces. Nonetheless the last 10 years has seen significant progress with regard to detecting optic nerve atrophy following opti

Effects of postmortem interval on myelin integrity in rhesus macaque brain tissue.

When conducting microscopy of human brain sections, the postmortem interval (PMI) introduces myelin-related artifacts that can confound neuropathological interpretation, yet the extent and detectability of these changes remain poorly characterized. This study examined the impact of controlled PMI on myelin integrity in rhesus macaque brain tissue using advanced optical imaging approaches. Brains from five aged rhesus macaques (20.5-28.5 years) were maintained at 4°C and analyzed at 0, 24, and 72 h postmortem. Myelin integrity in white and gray matter was assessed using quantitative birefringen

Anterior optic pathway pathology in CNS demyelinating diseases.

The anterior optic pathway is one of the preferential sites of involvement in CNS inflammatory demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica, with optic neuritis being a common presenting symptom. What is more, optic nerve involvement in these diseases is often subclinical, with optical coherence tomography demonstrating progressive neuroretinal thinning in the absence of optic neuritis. The pathological substrate for these findings is poorly understood and requires investigation. We had access to post-mortem tissue samples of optic nerves, chiasms and tracts from

Phenotyping of Mouse Models with OCT.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an invaluable technique to perform noninvasive retinal imaging in small animal models such as mice. It provides virtual cross sections that correlate well with histomorphometric data with the advantage that multiple iterative measurements can be acquired in timeline analyses to detect dynamic changes and reduce the number of animals needed per study.
