The prevalence and severity of oral impacts on daily performances in Thai primary school children.

BACKGROUND: Traditional methods of measuring oral health mainly use clinical dental indices and have been complemented by oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) measures. Most OHRQoL studies have been on adults and elderly populations. There are no systematic OHRQoL studies of a population-based sample of children. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence, characteristics and severity of oral impacts in primary school children. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of all 1126 children aged 11-12 years in a municipal area of Suphanburi province, Thailand. An OHRQoL measure, Chi

Erbium lasers in dentistry.

Erbium hard tissue lasers have the capability to prepare enamel, dentin, caries, cementum, and bone in addition to cutting soft tissue. The ability of hard tissue lasers to reduce or eliminate vibrations, the audible whine of drills, microfractures, and some of the discomfort that many patients fear and commonly associate with high-speed handpieces is impressive. In addition, these lasers can be used with a reduced amount of local anesthetic for many procedures. Today, these instruments have evolved from their initial use for all classes of cavity preparations to their ability for removing sof

Molecular triggers of neuroinflammation in mouse models of demyelinating diseases.

Myelinating cells wrap axons with multi-layered myelin sheaths for rapid impulse propagation. Dysfunctions of oligodendrocytes or Schwann cells are often associated with neuroinflammation, as observed in animal models of leukodystrophies and peripheral neuropathies, respectively. The neuroinflammatory response modulates the pathological changes, including demyelination and axonal injury, but also remyelination and repair. Here we discuss different immune mechanisms as well as factors released or exposed by myelinating glia in disease conditions. The spectrum of inflammatory mediators varies wi

Effect of different boron contents within boron-doped hydroxyapatite-chitosan nano-composite on the microhardness of demineralized enamel.

OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is a prevalent chronic disease globally, arising from an imbalance between tooth remineralization and demineralization. Early detection of lesions is crucial, with non-invasive methods preferred in the initial stages of caries for enamel remineralization and demineralization prevention. This study aimed to assess the impact of varying contents of boron-doped hydroxyapatite-chitosan nano-composite on the microhardness of demineralized enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Boron-doped hydroxyapatite-chitosan nano-composites at concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% were prepar

Fracture at the Ischio-Pubic Junction After Periacetabular Osteotomy in the Adolescent Population.

INTRODUCTION: The Ganz periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is a well-accepted surgical intervention for hip dysplasia. In the adolescent population it is performed in patients who are skeletally mature with symptoms related to acetabular dysplasia. Redistribution of stresses through the hemipelvis after PAO can lead to a fracture at the ischio-pubic junction (IPJ). METHODS: This is an IRB-approved, retrospective analysis of adolescent patients treated with a PAO for acetabular dysplasia from 1999 to 2012 at a single institution. Radiographic measurements were performed to include the lateral cente

The dental health status of dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: The number of patients with kidney failure who require dialysis is growing by 10% to 15% annually, and the likelihood that dentists will treat such patients is also increasing. The dental care of patients undergoing dialysis can be complex, given the prevalence of comorbid conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, renal osteodystrophy and immunosuppression, the presence of nondental prosthetic devices, and the use of antihypertensives and anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents. These patients appear to be predisposed to a variety of dental problems such as periodontal disease, narr

Clinical failures and shortfalls of immediate implant procedures.

The esthetic outcome of dental implants in the esthetic zone is a major treatment concern in modern dentistry, especially in single-step procedures, which unite extraction, implantation, and augmentation into one surgical intervention, and are gaining popularity. Although these procedures offer advantages concerning early soft tissue preservation, they also show a high risk of complications when careful patient selection is neglected. Thus, the aim of this article is to illustrate the complexity and limitations of immediate implant procedures using two case reports. The clinical cases and scie

Potential biomarkers for early periodontal inflammation: investigating CD5+ B cells, salivary cytokines and oral microbiome.

Periodontitis is a highly prevalent chronic inflammatory disease that causes progressive destruction of the tooth-supporting apparatus and is linked to multiple systemic disorders. Despite its high prevalence, early biomarkers capable of predicting individual susceptibility remain elusive. The multifactorial nature of the disease and the lack of a validated, specific indicators hinder reliable early diagnosis before irreversible tissue damage occurs. CD5+ B cells, known for their autoreactive potential and role in bone resorption, have been previously found elevated in advanced periodontitis.

The systemic impact of periodontitis in about 100,000 patients: associations with heart diseases, cancer, and mortality.

OBJECTIVES: Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory condition of tooth-supporting tissues, is associated with adverse systemic health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, malignancies and premature mortality. Large-scale assessments remain limited. We analyzed real-world data of approximately 100,000 matched patients to clarify the broader health impact of periodontitis. STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective study, we identified two cohorts − 47,498 patients each with and without periodontitis (ICD-10-CM: K05.6) - from the TriNetX database, matched by age and gender. We evaluated outcomes o

Free haem levels in gingival crevicular fluid and their relationship to periodontal clinical parameters, smoking and subgingival microbial composition.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Periodontitis caused by multifactorial polymicrobial infection results in a destructive inflammatory process and loss of tooth supporting tissues. Many putative bacterial virulence factors that cause host destruction are regulated by iron and haem. Therefore, this study investigated the free haem levels in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) at periodontitis sites in smokers and nonsmokers and their relationship to subgingival microbial composition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 78 patients with a split-mouth design who were divid
